DEDICATION i The class of 1986 fondly dedicates this edition of The Reed to Mrs. Elaine Burnham Mrs. Burnham has taught English to freshmen and seniors at Mar- shwood for nearly a decade. In that time her students have come to know her as a teacher and a friend. One who takes a genuine interest in the education and development of the entire person, regardless of who he is. If as Mark Van Doren sug- gests, “the art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery,” then in leading her students to a better understanding of themselves and their world, Mrs. Burnham has had marked success. She is always ready to assist as a classroom teacher, as a fan, as a chaperone, as an advisor, and as a friend. Her career has been one of sharing. “Here lies the very essence of our way of life: every man must share in every other man's life, either in sor- row or in joy. Already we are halfway through, what people have said, is the most challenging year of high school. They were right; this year has proven to be exceptionally difficult. But as juniors, we have discovered many changes in ourselves. We have faced challenges and overcome difficulties we thought were vir- tually impossible. We have matured over the past three years and are more confident of our abilities. We are looking forward to a successful and rewarding senior year and are excited about what the future has to offer us, and most importantly what we have to of- fer in the future.
