These individuals have ail offered something special to the class and have in- spired admiration and affection. The class of '84 has broken with tradition in electing to recognize one of its own. He is not honored for exceptional scholarship, athletic prowess, or extraordinary talents. Rather he is recognized for what Hemingway noted as heroic “grace under pressure.” It is this quiet courage that inspires our admiration, the assurance that truly man is not made for defeat.” Because life without hope for the future is not a prospect we wish to consider, his hope for the future is shared by all. Although we do not live in an age that feels comfortable with heroes, perhaps there is an acceptable heroism — “endurance for one moment more.” If so it is in this spirit that the class of 1984 dedicates this edition of the REED to BRIAN BECKNER 18 OFFICERS SENIOR CLASS LEADERS -l!- I C — Mr. Scelza, advisor, Jill Sweeney Pres., Eric Owen Vice Pres., Matt Prior Treasurer, Laurie Lucas Secretary, Karen Capen Historian. The freshman class of '87 has been successful in many ways, including winning the spirit stick and Spirit Week in October. Another successful pro- ject was the winning Homecoming float. Our float was a large paper mache football and flowers sym- bolizing ’87. There was a great deal of participa- tion within the class. At the Christmas bazaar the class raised about $95 for our treasury by selling baked goods, crafts, and raffling a hand made pillow donated by Suzanne O’Reilly. The freshmen plan a dance in April and are presenting a skit for Winter Carnival. We are willing to put all our efforts throughout the next four years here at Marshwood toward the goal of a fun and memorable graduation. Mr. Arthers, advisor, R. McKenney, treasurer, C. We sold croissants at the Christmas Bazaar, and will be selling valentines prior to Valentines Day. We have a committee which is planning events for Language Week, and there will be a banquet at the end of the year. LATIN CLUB The goals of the Latin Club are to pro- mote the study of Latin and to provide scholarships for its graduating members. Activities include: fund raising events, par- ticipation in the Christmas Bazaar, Language Week, and a possible field trip in the spring. Row 1: D. Bynion, A. Tangemen, T. Miller, S. Cerebona, S. Reputation is what you are supposed to be; character is what you are. Reputation is the photograph, character is the face. Reputation comes over from without; character grows up from within. Reputation is what you have when you come to a new community; character is what you have when you go away. Your reputation is learned in an hour; your character does not come to light for a year. Reputation is made in a moment; character is built in a lifetime. Reputation grows like a mushroom; character grows like the oak. A single newspaper report gives you your reputation; a life of toil gives you your character. Reputation makes you rich or makes you poor; character makes you happy or makes you miserable. Reputation is what men say about you on your tomb — stone; character is what angels say about you before the throne of God.
