Biology is defined as “the study of the life processes.” Mrs. Matijczyk has, in a unique way, taken her students beyond the world of protoplasm and dissection and into a realm of wisdom and awareness. Her efforts have left their mark on thousands of students whose lives have been enriched through personal contact. Her contributions to young people have been extremely vital and, in our hearts, Mrs. Matijczyk has already laid claim to immortality. With this dedication, we the class of 1978 salute you, Mrs. M.” with sadness at your departure, envy of those who will reap the benefits of your company in the future, and happiness at having been fortunate enough to know you at all. JUNIORS One kind of learning consists of lectures and books, note- taking, and tests. It takes place in the classroom, and almost everyone does the same thing. This is called formal education. Also, many people do just as they please to achieve satisfac- tion, but then find out later that the consequences of their actions are not worth the trouble. This is called experience. There are many ways to define education, and one of these is that education is experience, and the essence of experience is self-reliance. If we, the class of ’79, have learned anything during these past three years, it is to depend on ourselves, to take risks, to do what we must to enjoy, and not to have regret for happier times. Becoming a mature human being is hard work — but we are equal to it. 54 Janice Adams Russell Allen Julie Ammons Leanne Anderson Theresa Atwell Timothy Barrett Iola Barthelemy Caroline Beauchemin Cheryl Becker Kristina Bennett Kevin Bolstridge Ann Bond Ethan Booth Debra Boston Susan Boston Mark Buckley Kathleen Burns Cheryl Burton Jane Callahan Sandra Camden Karen Card David Caswell Michael Chagnon Lisa Cheney Gregory Ciesielski Andrew Clapp Brian Cole Michael Coulters Donald Cress ■ David Cultrera Mark Ellis Neil Ettinger Anne Floyd Kevin Folger Patricia Ford Graydon Gadapee Leo Gagne Mark Gagnon Sheila Gallagher Scott Garland 55 56 Penny Grogan Nikki Hager Deborah Hartford Scott Hatch Michael Hayward Renee Hieftje David Hitlon Kenneth Hilton Christain Hinton Denis Houde Denise Houde Alisa Hubbard Kevin Hughes Mark Hunkier Christina Jacques Jeanette Janson Peter Jardine Alan Jeralds Bruce Jones Jon Joseph Dawn Keefer James Keevan Joni Kelsey David Kenney Steven Lachance Stephen Lamprey Anne Lamson Matthew Lane Kevin Lapointe Russell LaPorte Diane Leach Robert Lincoln Perry Lunt William Martel Robert McPherson David Merrill Emily Murphy Kathy Nadeau James Nettles Barbara Obrey Andrew Patterson Brenda Pelletier Cathy Perkins Gary Perschy Linda Pike Dale Pillsbury Linda Pinkham Beverly Place Sandra Raeside Leon Raitt Eric Reeder Lisa Ricci Lise Roberge Steven Roberts Matthew Rogers Barbara Ross Joy Rousselle Traci Shapleigh Sharon Soule James Spear Pamela Spinney Daniel Tehada Lisa Thompson Christine Vaillaneourt Jeena Wachter Richard Weeks Michael Welts Kathy Wheeler Denise Wilkinson Janice Wilkinson James Wilshire James Witham Edward Worcester Dwayne Wright Kelly Zajechowski Lisa Zamarchi Richard Zuschlag 57 SOPHOMORES Tracy Barrett, Treasurer; Anne Martin, President; Mr. McCarthy, Advisor; Lisa Kinney, Vice-President; Sheila Thomas, Secretary. Though we are only halfway through our high school years, we’ve begun to realize how much school and friends mean to us. We have learned the meaning of “Hawk Pride” and we show it. We’ve learned to be competitive and to accept defeat when it comes our way. The challenge of the next two years is before us, but our experience is behind us, and with our deter- mination, we will reach our goals. 58 Dale Anderson Randy Armstrong Rachel Arrington Tracy Barrett James Batchelder John Battis Dale Becker Bambi Benvie Brenda Bold Raymond Bolduc Richard Boston Tina Brault Michael Budlong James Burkhead. THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY CONGRATULATES THE CLASS OF 1978 SERVICE Work is doing what you now enjoy for the sake of a future which you clearly see and desire. Drudgery is-doing under strain what you don’t now enjoy and for no end that you can now appreciate. The beauty of work depends upon the way we meet it, whether we arm ourselves each morning to attack it as an enemy that must be vanquished before night comes — or whether we open our eyes with the sunrise to welcome it as an approaching friend who will keep us delightful company and who will make us feel at evening that the day was well worth its fatigue. Throw away all ambition beyond that of doing the day’s work well. The travelers on the road to success live in the present, heedless of taking thought for the morrow. Live neither in the past nor in the future, but let each day’s work absorb your entire energies, and satisfy your widest ambition. God frees our souls, not from service, not from duty, but into service and into duty, and he who mistakes the purpose of his freedom mistakes the character of his freedom. He who thinks that he is being released from the work, and not set free in order that he may accomplish that work, mistakes the condition into which his soul is invited to enter. 1977-78 OFFICERS Ken Holmes, President Melanie Fife, Vice-President Shari Ainsworth, Secretary Rose Seeley, Treasurer Marilee Gammon, Parliamentarian-Historian 126 Stephen Cultrera Eliot, Maine 03903 Auto Body . . .
