On the national, state, and local levels we elected new governments, and many of us had our first opportunity to participate as citizens in a democracy. At Marshwood we also had experiences of mental gym- nastics or physical control, of harmonic music or rau- cous cheering, of victories or defeats, of laughter or tears, of giving or receiving. All life’s polarities asserted themselves in some form. Years hence when we consider the way we were we will remember our- selves . . . Looking Ahead Yes, Marshwood has offered many opportunities and choices during 1976-77. All of these have been accepted, rejected, or executed under the symbol of the hawk aloft. Now as the class of '77 embarks on an even greater adventure, may that staunch hawk spirit prevail and may each of them begin Life's odyssey as Tennyson's Ulysses . . . 'Tis not too late to seek a new- er world. Push off, and sitting well in order smite The sounding furrows; for my pur- pose holds To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths Of all the western stars, until I die. It may be that the gulfs will wash us down; It may be we will touch the Happy Isles, And see the great Achilles, whom we knew. I've heard it in the dullest land. And on the strangest sea; Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me. Emily Dickinson SPECIAL HONORS Each year several special senior awards are given on the basis of good citizenship, high test scores, and faculty selection. These seniors are this year's recipients. CONN.— A SPECIAL THANKS The Class of 1977 expresses its appreci- ation to Mr. Fielek, who has been our advisor for four years. During our four years, we have benefitted from his energy, devotion, enthusiasm, and cre- ativity . Thank you, Mr. Fielek. 45 ROUNDS ONE AND TWO HIGH SCHOOL QUIZ M.H.S. CHAMPS Having demonstrated their mettle as a team in Marshwood's annual Classes Match Wits Contest by defeating all opponents for three consecutive years, the winning senior combination of Lisa Grogan, Richard Obrey, and Bob Stevens was the logical choice to represent Marshwood in WMTW; Channel Eight’s High School Quiz. As their class- mate Susan McPherson tallied their points on statewide television, they proved themselves wor- thy representatives. At press time Marshwood had defeated three opponents by more than doubling their scores to advance to the semi-finals. As one of four survivors out of a field of thirty-two, Marshwood's team, supported by lively student audiences and their advisor Mr. Cousens, may well be the State Whiz Kids Champs. THE CENTERFOLD ENTHUSIASM APATHY MATURITY NAIVETE CIVILITY BARBARITY JUNIORS The junior class of Marshwood High School has both grown and lessened this year. We have grown in our friendships, memories, knowledge, and experiences within the high school community and the community at large. We have lessened in terms of numbers. A number of our friends and classmates have moved, sought employment, or will graduate early with the current senior class. We truly have achieved upperclassman status this year and will soon be seniors - a time of mixed emotions before we leave the protection and frustrations of MHS. D. St. Pierre, Pres., R. Jenkins, V. Our sights and sounds of last year are silent, but our memories will never die. We've stood in long lines trying to get our schedules made for the next year. We've been late for classes because of our chatting in the halls. We know the ups and downs of Marsh- wood and we've got only two more years to go. L. Zamarchi, Pres.. C. Vaillancoun. V. Pres.. C. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL I feel particularly proud to be involved with the students of Marshwood High School. When all is said and done regarding your graduation from high school, I know you will feel the same sense of pride. I want to stress the positive accomplishments of students for they are the staff of pride and as we are so aware, it takes much more to do the positive and bring credit to yourself, parents, school, and town than it does to reject responsibility and not make a contribution. As you read this yearbook, regardless of when, you will feel a growing warmth toward the times you had and the friends you made. Wherever your path leads, keep a corner of your memory filled with the Hawk Pride” and it will surely help you step smartly. E. H. Forbush Principal Marshwood HS Searchin' for a Rainbow I rode into town today In my mind I said, Lord, I'd love to stay.” Something in me said, Go on home. Don't know what it is, but the Good Lord bred it in my bones. And I'm searchin' for a rainbow, And if the wind ever shows me where to go You'll be waitin' at the end and I know I'll say to heck with that pot of gold. I'll say to heck with that pot of gold. This old mare she’s gettin' kind of tired, But in my heart she knows there’s just this one desire. She’s going to take me to the end of that road, Then she'll lay down and die, And I'll say, God rest her soul. And I'm searchin' for a rainbow, And if the wind ever shows me where to go You'll be waitin' at the end and I know I'll say to heck with that pot of gold. I'll say to heck with that pot of gold. And I'm searchin' for a rainbow, And If the wind ever shows me where to go You'll be waitin' at the end and I know I’ll say to heck with that pot of gold. 127 The Marshall Tucker Band Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear Though as for that, the passing there Hal worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh! I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
