Goreworcf This year at Marshwood High School, we have tried to promote harmony and unity as a student body. With a world full of disillusionment and dissent, we have been encouraged by our administration and faculty to follow the road of peace. Through studying and through taking part in extracurricular activities, we learn what life as responsible adults will be like. Our futures will vary greatly, but our lives have been molded by the education which we have received at Marshwood High School. Gxpfan aiion Of Our Gooer The goal of every student when he enters high school is graduation and the beginning of his adventures in the living world. This is what our cover represents. The solid purple block signifies our security as mem- bers of the student body—functioning self-confidently and aware of the protection high school life affords each of us. Symbolizing the unknown future is the mass of solid white — unsoiled and untried. The single geometric figure represents each one of us as individuals who will attempt to venture into the future, utilizing the knowledge which we have gained throughout our high school year. Whether we succeed or fail in our at- temps is as yet an unanswered question. 3 Dedication rJ)onafcfiJ. HiacjBane For the precious hours, the unlimited energy, the dedicated ideas, and the constant understanding which he has given his students, his school and his com- munity, we wish to thank Mr. MacLane by dedicating to him this second edition of the Marsh wood “Reed”. 4 JlCr. Grayson C71. DfariJet To the graduating class: Congratulations on your graduation! There are more challenges today than ever before. It is true that there is much in the news today of war, social strife, poverty and hunger; but this is no reason to become discouraged. The days of the western frontier are gone, to be sure, but many other frontiers are awaiting to be tried: frontiers of medicine, social justice, outer space, the search for world peace. Whether we like it or not, we are all involved in this struggle for the betterment of our civilization. No matter what your choice of school or vocation, realize that our very survival commands each of us to do our part in this noble effort. Mr. Grayson A. Hartley School Superintendent SAD 35 JlCr. 7)ona c y. JKacIBane In the poem “Today” by Waterman, we find the lines, “We shall do much in the years to come, but what have we done today?” I believe that the students of Marshwood High School can answer with pride, “We plan to do much in the years to come, for today we have already done much”. This yearbook represents one of the more tangible accomplishments of our students. Tangible results are always easy to see, but the intangible, such as the work and growth of our students, are more difficult to assess. However, through consistent student effort and cooperation, these tangibles have aided us in building — in the short space of two years — a Marshwood to which we point with pride. In the classroom, on the athletic field, and on the stage, the students of Marshwood have performed with that ex- tra bit of spirit and pride which gives to a school the fire and vigor that transforms it from an ordinary school into “Our School”. Therefore, to the students, faculty and staff of Marshwood High School, I say very sincerely — “Well done!” Donald J. MacLane Principal 7 MR. ROY E. WHALEN 8 MRS. ELLEN FORBES MR. JOSEPH H. G. The efforts of the Junior Class this year were centered on the Prom as plans were laid for the second annual ball held at Marshwood High. The theme for this year’s prom was “The Enchanted Sea”. This effect was created by the decorations which depicted oceanographic life. The Prom was a delight to all the students who attended, and it gave the many spectators a prom they will re- member for a long, long time to come. The Juniors worked hard to make it a night to remember and through their efforts, it became one of the most exciting events of the entire year! r 42 BACK ROW: Mr. Perry, C. Hoffses, S. Murray, J. A “Dress-Down Day” was held for the entire school and students were allowed to dress down in jeans and sneakers and “mod” clothes. However, any student who desired to dress in unusual attire had to pay 25tf to the Sophomore Class! Many students participated, and although they were allowed to dress casually, classes continued as usual and everyone abided by the rules. 44 BACK ROW: J. Nelson, D. Thompson, D. Maglaris, S. Winter Carnival did not take place this year, but the plans were smoothed out, so that in years to come, it will be- come a tradition. The Privilege Committee is one of the few in the State of Maine which is made up of members of the Student Council rather than of teachers. Students who have lost their privileges must submit a written explanation of the reasons why they feel their privileges should be returned. They must then appear before the Privilege Committee and the Committee will judge the sincerity of the student. This committee promotes the use of democracy and justice in our everyday lives and gives responsible students the opportunity to prepare for their job as adults. From the profits made by the successful Magazine Drive which was held again this year, the Student Council awarded its money to a fund for the purchasing of volumes of “Who’s Who in America” for the Library. Along with sponsoring the Magazine Drive, the Student Council arranged for many of the assemblies given throughout the year. Members of the Student Council have helped in building a stable foundation on which new ideas and strong values can be constructed. 50 SCa ion a J(on or Society THIRD ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: C. Sawyer, B. National Honor Society has taken its position as a highly esteemed organization within the student body by ful- filling its essential qualities of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. The members of NHS have rendered their services to the school this year by aiding the Administration at all official school functions, such as, Open House, the annual Public Speaking Contest, all conventions, and the Science Fair. National Honor Society has also promoted functions within itself. The members have earned money for the “Dollars for Scholars” Scholarship Program by selling candy and tonic at all of the home basketball games this year. Members also had a candy drive throughout the two towns for the purpose of the scholarship fund as was the “Fun- In” held in April. NHS had two inductions during the year, one of which was given as an assembly so that the student body would have the chance to find out what NHS is and how it functions. The other was a formal candlelight ceremony at night for the parents of the inductees. This brought the total NHS membership to 27 before graduation. National Honor Society hopes to encourage more students to direct their efforts towards membership in the or- ganization. It has certainly proven itself a worthy goal for which to strive. 51 yCewspaper SECOND ROW: D. Garvin, D. Eldredge, T. Stevens, J. Thompson, J. Sonka, G. Milliken, E. Palmer, D. Thompson, C. The Marshwood Band played at all the football games this year and gave several half-time shows which provided entertainment for the crowd and showed support for our team. The annual Christmas Concert was held December 18. The setting was completely different from that of the pre- vious year. Band members spent many hours working to turn the stage into a cozy Christmas-time living room. The stage was decked with a beautifully decorated tree, a rocker, a fireplace, and the usual stockings “hung with care”. Tall soldiers eight feet tall smiled their approval from the walls of the cafetorium and warmed the hearts of children, young and old, who attended the performance. It was truly a night to remember! Other successful performances by the band were the Pops Concert held in May and the Exchange Concert with Rumford High School, April 26 and May 10. The Band Boosters sponsor many of the activities of the band, and without their valuable assistance it would have been impossible for the band to participate in these functions. 53 BACK ROW: C. Mrs. Green is the advisor. Latin Club holds its meetings once a month, and the dues are one dollar and twenty cents a year. This year sixteen new members joined Latin Club bringing the total to twenty-eight members. Every year the initiation of new members is an affair not to be forgotten. The new members dress as Romans and act out a deed of some famous Roman myth in order to show that they are worthy of membership. During the year the Latin Club went to a Greek play, “Antigone”, at the University of New Hampshire. A book fair was held in order to raise money for scholarship purposes. A Roman Banquet was another activity held for the Latin Club members and their guests. It was enjoyable to all. 55 MRS. FURBUSH MRS. RAITT L. TO R.: L. Whitney, A. Gopdwin, R. Carpenter, L. Greatly begin! though thou have time But for a line, be that sublime,- Not failure, but low aim, is crime. Ah, with what lofty hope we came! But we forget it, dream of fame, And scrawl, as 1 do here, a name. James Russell Lowell 82 MclNTIRE MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME Robert I.
