Salute to Music MHS is really on the upbeat when it comes to music. At the Christmas and Spring concerts audiences thrilled at the rhythm and novelty of these teenage artists from the MIXED CHORUS and the GLEE CLUBS. They are truly MHS's ambassadors of song. At Christmas the band and chorus presented a colossal music treat, a blend- ing ofthe blare and the beat. Spring tournaments were a triumph, tool For the first time Channel 361 has a group of caroling Carusoes who love to enter- tain. To complement them are the equally talented and charrning choraliers who also love a good song fest be it off-key or on-key. 1 5 1 by . A major contribut- ing factor to the Bengal's last place finish in the Valley Conference was a rash of injuries to key personnel. Tigers also ran against op- position that proved to be exceptionally well balanced. The nearest MHS Conference victory was the Rapids encounter where the Tigers led by two touchdowns entering the final period. Second half failures were also responsible for two other Bengal defeats. However, the necessary utilization of inexperienced players should aid the 1961 Director King squad in rebuilding. Aslakson and Beebe are three- letter winners. Baokboard Magic from Ccwalcade of Sports For the second consecutive year, forward CHARLIE ASLAKSON led all Wisconsin Valley Confer- ence individual scorers by racking up 283 points. Charlie's season total of 430 points boosted his three-year mark to 1133, a school record! The southpawed jump shot artist also laid claim to the MHS one-game scoring record by tallying 41-2 against D. C. Everest. To prove his all around ability, he also led the team in assists and placed third in rebounding. BILL STUTE'S biggest asset on the hardwood was height, and he certainly took advantage of his 6-ll frame to haul in many re- bounds. The season high for Bill was a 21 point splurge that helped down D. C. Everest. His most spec- tacular shot was an uncanny leap- ing-driving, one-handed l a y u p from the sides of the free throw line. HPUFE, BENNER, chief under- study to Stute at the center post, saw action in every game the past season mainly for his rebounding ability. He hit his stride against Stevens Point with 9 points. Used mainly as a spot player at the guard post, ,HM STARLINCYS peak scoring endeavor came against Mosinee when he hit for 11 points. He relied mainly on his jump and set shooting ability to score. MTWICGYM MASON, the Junior who became well known as a terror under the boards and a specialist on defense, combined with Aslak- son to make up the most feared 1-2 scoring punch in the Conference. His finest effort came against Mos- inee as he pumped in 27 points. 8I ROW 1: Paul Benner, Bill Stute, Charlie Aslakson, Bob Masong ROW 2 Paul Som mers, Alan Werth, ,lim Starling, Rick Beebe. Varsity The Bengal cagers compiled a very respectable 10-8 overall record for the past season and took fourth place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with a 6-6 mark. The highlight of the season was a five-game winning skein, in which the Tigers averaged 88 points per game. The victory string included a sparkling 113-67 mangle of Mosinee that broke all scoring feats of past MHS teams, and a vengeance victory over undefeated Medford 82-60. The Raiders had eked out a 62-58 decision earlier in the campaign. The Tigers gained the fourth spot in the Valley Conference on the strength of twin triumphs over defending champion Rhinelander, 59-54 and 78-595 Merrill's Bluejays 72-43 and 70-55, and D. C. Everest, 71-65 and 98-74. Wisconsin Rapids, finishing with an unblemished Conference record with the exception of a final defeat by Point, twice struggled before conquering MHS, 76-73 and 65-61. Only twice during the '60-,61 basketball wars did the Tigers lose by more than 10 points, once each to highly touted Stevens Point, 72-56, and erratic Antigo, 80-56. Other squeakers Bengals wound up on the short end were a 68-67 defeat at Antigo, an 84-79 loss at Point, and a non conference 59-58 loss to Black River Falls. The Tigers won two other non-conference games, mauling Nekoosa 74-48 and inching by Waupaca, 65-62.
