VOL. I NUMBER XX MARSHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL CONTENTS DEDICATION SENIORS ACTIVITIES FACULTY it ' s only teenage wasteland — The Who 4 m2 “Music halh charms to soothe the savage beast. To soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak — Congrue When music is in the air, life seems a little better; each day. Mr. Cowgill and Mr. Adams dedicate themselves to much of our happiness through their music. Mr. Cowgill who has been here for seventeen years, and Mr. Adams who has been here for eight, have made the music depart- ment one of the strongest areas of Marshfield High School. Members of the band, orchestra and Marshalaires participate yearly in exchange concerts; many of these students also com- pere in the South East District, the New England, and the All- State Music Festivals. With Mr. Cowgill and Mr. Adams extra help after school most of there students have been able to parti- ciapte in these festivals. Not only does Marshfield High enjoy the talents of Mr. Cow- gill and Mr. Adams, but also — the community as a whole. Holi- day concerts are put on for the public, and at times the depart- ment performs for special groups and association. Individual students, the school, and the community are en- dibted to Mr. Cowgill and Mr. Adams through their talents, en- ergy, patience, and dedication, they have made an ummeasurable contribution to everyone. “Music, when soft voices die. The long sought after goal of being the oldest class at the E.A. Martinson Junior High was finally reached. The year started off on the right foot with the football and field hockey teams having winning seasons under the coaching of Mr. and Mrs. Moriarty. The cheerleaders and football players were rewarded for their efforts when they be- came honorary engineers at the Club Car Res- taurant. What was so good about all those rolls? Christmas time approached and appropriately enough the entire student body witnessed a spec- tacular concert directed by Mr. Lockwood. The winter was highlighted by the girls crucial intra- mural-championship basketball game between the Red Hawks and Wanda ' s Witches. Spring came and with it the many hours of practice for two gym demonstrations. It was all worth it when we watched the faces of the grade school kids as they gazed at the big ninth graders doing their stunts. The big event of the social season was the May Dance, which was attended by almost everyone. Those were the days. We finished the year; de- parted from the security of the Junior High and bravely awaited our fate at the High School in September. Sophomore Year Having completed our stay at the hallowed halls of the Junior High we entered MH5. The class officers, Mike Johnson, Holly Soule, Robin Wildes, Claudette Tice, and Sue Taylor found the new advisor, Mr. Deftos, much to their liking. Representatives to the Student Council, and par- tially responsible for the abolishment of the dress code, were Jeff Hare, Scott McKay, and Diana Harvey. The varsity football team, comprised mostly of the male members of our class, tried valiantly to defeat their more experienced opponents but met with little success. Our main function that year, held in Novem- ber, was the profitable showing of the movie, “Wait Until Dark. Dick Dubois, Rick Carlson, Scott McKay, Jim Noonan and Alan Kapust were members of the Cross-Country team, coached by Mr. Patenaude. Who can ever forget the experiments in Biolo- gy labs and the resulting catastrophes; the brutal dissecting needle wounds, broken petri dishes and the seemingly endless millions of loose ger- bils. The new addition was finished in January and with it the start of the trips over the frozen walkway. The two sports banquets found Jill Woodward receiving a letter for Field Hockey, Nancy Mc- Gurty and Jean Gallagher for cheerleading, Mary Jack MacDonald, Denise Coppenrath and Nancy Connolly for softball, Tom Hale, Rick South- worth, Pete Clifford, Dave Briere and Mark Tan- guay for football and Jim Noonan and Rick Carl- son for track. In the spring, several of our class became members of the baseball team. These brave souls were Wayne Clark, Gerry Gibson, Pete Clifford and Mark Tanguay. The girls and boys tennis teams welcomed the arrival of Gina Rossano, Pat Deegan, Rob Roy, Greg Roberts, Jackie Canny and Jeff Hare. Finals were interrupted by a few bombscares and demonstrations. All in all we certainly had an impressive record during our Sophomore Year. Junior Year We entered in the fall of ' 70 feeling a bit more sophisticated now that we were upperclassmen. We felt even more so with our newly acquired let- ter jackets, class rings and driver ' s licenses; some of the latter were soon to be revoked. The stu- dent parking lot became less crowded when the revival of the bicycle hit M.H.S. The new school year brought a new advisor, Mr. Dente, to cope with us. During the fall months, the football team ex- perienced its first winning season in three years. The Junior-Senior Class Variety Show was a huge success providing a wide range of talent, from the Translyvania ballet to the Midgets. Advocates of Women ' s Lib gained a foothold as the Key Club was invaded by many lovelies. M.H.S. came under surprise attack at Thanks- giving time when Mrs. Ritchie and Mrs. Peterson and their band of Indians decided to raid the school cafeteria. The boys basketball team coached by Mr. Searfoss enjoyed a winning sea- son despite the Hull obstacle course complete with broken windows. On the more academic side, Jim Noonan and Mark Tanguay were chosen to represent MHS at Boys State and Holly Soule at Girls State. Several members of the class were inducted into the Na- 53 tional Honor Society. Kathy Bryant was the win- ner of the essay contest sponsored by the Lion ' s Club. The exchange concert at Attlebore left that town with a few lasting impressions of the Marshfield youth. The water bottle fights in Chemistry certainly were the cause of ruin for many a prospective scientist. Ron Everett found H 2 P to his liking when he decided to test the shower in the lab. Poor Ron ! In May, the Junior Prom was held at the May- flower Inn in Manomett, a first for the class of ' 72. Nancy McGurty was chosen queen and Tom Hale as king. In other spring events, the baseball team, with a tremendous effort, won the State Class C Championship. Some members of that team were Rick Gentry, Pete Clifford, Mark Tanguay, Scott MacKay, Ned Lamphier, Larry Harrigan, and Jim Shields. The Track team won the South Shore League Championship led by Kevin Scola, Rick Southworth, Rick Carlson, Gene Broadway, Jim Noona, and Geof O ' Neil. The smoking rules were relaxed and the air around MHS became another target for the anti- pollution commitees. The poorly attended class beach party was fun anyway. Yearbook picture- taking ended June on a note of expectation for the Senior Year. Senior Year Finally, our class made it to the top as Seniors! All of those vows about not acting so superior when we became Seniors seem to have been for- gotten. Mr. Fancatore switched from Chemistry teacher to youth counselor in September. Sur- prisingly enough, even more members of our class were inducted into the National Honor Society. The football team, inspired by the winning tradition established in spring sports, fought its way to the top of the South Shore League for a three-way tie for first place. Spurred on by the Booster Club rallies, they broke Hanover High ' s 28 game winning streak in a 14-0 contest. The field hockey, soccer, girls ' basketball and ice hockey teams all followed suit with winning seasons. The spirit of the boys ' basketball team with mod coach Don Henderson at the helm, was frustrated at times but never broken. Good Government day elections were held and Mary Jacq MacDonald became the M.H.S. repre- sentative. The Student Council sponsored rock concert was a first for M.H.S. and very successful. The Senior-sponsored play, The Glass Me- nagerie , featured outstanding performances by Jutta Rossano and Rick Gentry. Superlatives were reinstated as well as the con- tinance of the will and history. We anticipate the closing events of the year. Though graduation spells an end to our high school days, we look forward to the future, for every ending is a beginning. And in this our be- ginning, we as others before us, hope to seek a newer and better world in which to live. Susan L. Meetings are held every activity period and are conducted according to the rules of parliamentary procedure. The Student Council is the represented voice of all Marshfield High School stu- dents. All of its actions are subject to the approval of the high school principal. Officers: Jim Noonan, President; Sharon Greenlaw, Vice-President; Mary Jack McDonaald, Secretary; Robin Wildes, Treasurer. 68 National Honor Society The Marshfield Chapter of the National Honor Society has two directions or purposes. The first and most obvious is to recognize and honor those juniors and seniors who are outstanding in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership and service. This year an off-campus banquet was held to cele- brate the admission of the new members which par- ents and faculty also attended. The second direction concerns the society as a school organization. The members as a group try to perform services for the school such as tutoring, ushering and preparing the student handbook. Most of the enthusiasm, however, surrounds the money making events to raise scholarship money for the newly established NHS Scholarship. Funds raised during the last two years will be awarded to a senior for the first time this year. Equinox Staff The Marshfield High School student newspaper has as its goal the dissemi- nation of school news and the provision of a written forum for student opinion. The editors and reporters gather newsworthy items and elicit comments and contributions from stu- dents and try to present a balance for each edition. In addition to the satis- faction of putting out a paper, the staff and contri- butors enjoy the opportun- ity to put their writing and reporting skills to work in the real world of the total school. In a growing publication, the staff tries to capture the memories and events of the year, through pictures and print. It is hoped that each student will have a personnal record of his high school years, so that in the future he may look back with joy and melancoly.
