Kevin Clancy, as president, led our class to bigger and better things. One of the big events of the year included our Sadie Hawkins dance, where Larry Greene provided a fine dancing performance for all. Surprisingly, many of the members of the Class of ' 71 were in- ducted into the National Junior Honor Society. A certain few girls decided to relive their childhood days as they pranced around the halls with their white ankle socks and high heels. The big event of the year, the May Dance, closed the first of our high school years. We left Mr. Moriarty and segregated lunches for the exciting new adventures that awaited us in the halls of MHS. SOPHOMORE YEAR Having graduated from the halls of E. A. Martinson Junior High School, the class of 71 entered Marshfield High School, where it would stay for the next 3 years. During the following years, the ath- letes developed their skills, the scholars widened their knowledge, and the drop-outs dropped out. Inspiring us to heights of achieve- ment was our worthy advisor, Mr. Donald Abbott, or was he worthy of us? Organizing the events of our first year were Kevin Clancy, presi- dent; Sue Daley, vice-president; Bill Shanley, secretary; Marylou Maeder, treasurer; and Meg Dubois as historian. Under their leader- ship, the class had a successful cake sale with Bill Shanley and Kevin Clancy, leading the attack by holding up their homemade sign for the entire football game. 58 Mr. Abbott added several gray hairs to his head while directing our class play โ€œOmen, Amen.โ€œ The outstanding cast of this comedy included Bryan Mortimer and Pamela Coyne in the leading roles. The highlights of the play came when Bryan ' s pant legs refused to return to his ankles. Chris Aronson passionately clutched Alfred, a plastic dummy, while Janet Nectow energetically exercised with a set of pushups. All in all, it was a memorable evening. On the more serious side, Marilyn Swan won 1st prize in the United Nations Prize Speaking Contest with an all -expense paid trip to New York. Will Hale placed third in the contest. Musically in- clined John Hunt, participated in the โ€œGreater Bostonians, a music special on WHDH T.V. Louise Gilman was accepted for the New England Music Festival. j The 1968-69 basketball season brought forth Fred Fletcher, Fred I Labo, Bob Wynne, Dave Josselyn, Dick Rossi, Scott Richards, Mike I and Bill Shanley as hopeful prospects. Charlie O ' Kelly continued to 1 control the boards, as he scored every game. Steve Doyle revealed his running ability throughout his first cross country season. Mai ! Pratt coached the year; if anyone questioned him about his only los- ! ing season in 25 years. Coach Pratt would say, โ€œAh, it was our boy, I Andy, ah. Hunt. Our first ice hockey season finds in the penalty 1 โ€™ ' box. Jay Adler, with a record 3 and 3; that is, 3 fights, 3 wins. Join- ing Jay were Jake Connolly, Chuck Capello, Scott Murphy, Steve I Vining, Bob Ford, Mark Longden, Chris Morgan, and goalie, Dave Pinkham. Bouncing back to basketball, we find that the girls (under the di- rection of devastating Dan Pierce) included Mickey Coppenrath, Meg Dubois, Jan Anderson, Gayle Frugoli, Audrey Dam, Lisa Ken- j nedy. Sue Carty, Meg McNulty, and Cindy Catabia, who shot their I way to a winning season. Furthermore, Joanne Williams, Sue Daly, i I I I 59 and Lee Clapp led the Field Hockey team to an undefeated season. In softball, Eileen Ryan and Debbie Leddin received their letters. Other highlights of the year included Mr. Searfoss ' cotton pick- ing biology labs running hot as blue blazes ; the certain sopho- more girls ' lunch table feeding Mr. Babb with jokes for his senior classes; the spring courtyard privileges; and the launching of Miss Janet Anderson in her brilliant career as daily announcer. JUNIOR YEAR In 1969 the Class of ' 71 swam through the puddles and slipped over the ice into the new addition as we began our junior year. Some firsts occurred at M.H.S. that year: talk studies and the elimi- nation of the dress code. This was truly a year of changing styles. Our junior year brought a complete changing of the guard as Tim Keenen became President; Mark Palmstrom, Vice-President; Martha O ' Brien, Secretary; Sue Carty, Treasurer; and Gayle Frugoli, Histo- rian. The group Emergency Exit played at the first dance that year and walked out the emergency exit with all the profits. In fact, we lost $40. The Class redeemed this loss, however, by realizing a $700 profit at the Variety Show. Jane Turner won first prize; Vanessa Edwards, second prize; and the Midgets, third. Our boys jogged on to the football field and scored a brilliant win over Duxbury, and another win over ah . . . oh, well, on to track. In the spring of this year, Steve Doyle broke the record in the mile. During basketball season, Dave Josselyn, Bob Wynne, Bill Shanley, Mike Shanley, Will Hale, Steve Payne, and Fred Labo led Warren Searfoss ' Hotdogs through another season. The girls basketball and field hockey teams held about the same record as the year before, losing to the same teams. Donovan ' s song Wear Your Love Like Heaven became the theme of the Junior Class prom. Fighting our way through debris and choking on the dust of the Rexicana, a small band of us, armed with brooms and crepe paper, managed to transfrom the halls into an outstanding creation. Ann Shackleton was crowned Queen, with Janet Anderson, Sue Carty, Martha O ' Brien, Debe Leddin, and Paula Loughran attending in her court. The evening was regarded as a suc- 60 cess even though Mr. Abbott went home with 27 new gray hairs. Tim Keenen and Charles O ' Kelly were chosen by the faculty members to go to Boys ' State. Marilyn Swan was elected to repre- sent M.H.S. at Girls ' State. The students of Marshfield High School continued to rattle the foundations of these hallowed halls with the Memorial Day protest. The year ended with a classic bomb scare during the first day of final exams. SENIOR YEAR!!! The senior year started as junior ended โ€” with a series of tele- phone calls. As a result, we witnessed our illustrious fire and police departments in action. For the first time in our three years at MHS, the football team had a winning season. Tri-captains Steve Vining, Fred Fletcher and Fred Labo led the squad. Likewise, that fall Steve Doyle was the All-League Champion, and led the Cross Country team to a winning season. The class elected Tim Keenen as Presi- dent, Mark Palmstrom as Vice-president, Chris Aronson as Secre- tary, Sue Carty as Treasurer, Gayle Frugoli as Historian, and Fred Fletcher as Chaplain. Even with strong financial backing, one could faintly hear Sue Carty saying, Pay your dues. Kevin Clancy be- came the Student Council President, assisted by Bill Shanley, Vice-president, Janet Anderson Secretary, and Sue Daley Treasurer. Tiptoeing their way to stardom, Steve Vining, Bob Wynne, and Fred Labo performed a folly of fantastic footsteps to highlight the Se- nior-Junior Variety Show. First prize in the show went to Banessa Edward; second prize, to Mary Deegan and Gail Powers; third prize, to Jane Turner; and a special good sportsmanship award to the Bal- lerinas. The Senior-sponsored play, The Miracle Worker, fea- tured Debbie Daneman, Roger Taylor, and Beverly Gunther. The Class of ' 71 came up with another first of abolishing Senior Superlatives. This was replaced by the Class Will and History. The Class of ' 71 has made it this far, and looks back upon four memorable years. We anticipate Class Day, the Banquet, the all-night party, and โ€” most of all โ€” Graduation. 61 We, the members of the Senior Class, do here- by declare this to be our Class Will. ' .Iยฎ 1 k ' r 1 The Medical Career Club was started in September, 1970 and now has 37 members. The interest far reaching goals and co-operation of this group has been greater than I anticipated. On September 30, a number of girls attended the Mass. State Nurses Fair at the Government Center in Boston. Many schools of nursing were represented and the program was most beneficial to young aspir- ing nurses. Guests have been chosen, thus far, from our own faculty personnel with diversified medical background. Miss Collins spoke about medical technician work. Mr. Searfoss gave an interesting talk about several new discoveries in medicine, such as the use of isotopes, and atomic energy in medicine today. Mr. Deftos showed an excellent film on the modern hospital today with its newly found electronic servants and stressed the importance of interlacing of all departments. Mr. Deftos also gave a talk on why students choose medical careers, stressing self satisfaction, enriching lives of others, service to the needy and concern for the less fortunate. Ecology Club At a time when nature is reacting violently to the distruction and pollution cast upon it by modern industrialized man, the members of the Ecology Club are attempting to understand how they can cor- rect some of these problems. Talking within the club and with local leaders, cleaning up the community, and becoming aware of how action can be taken with- out disrupting of the social order are the guide lines within which the club hopes to be somewhat effective in resolving the crisis of the environment. Drama Club And A Great Performance By Mr. Sides Now, watch me gang . . .! 92 . . . First you take it like this . . . . . . give it a good (grunt) twist . . . 93 . . . and r-r-r-rip! Junior Senior Vanessa Edwards Kathy Murray 94 Inquest Denise, Sue and Jane On October 23 and 24 the juniors and seniors collaborated to produce their Class Variety Show. The most unforgettable performance was the Transylvania Ballet. The act consisted of four football players, Fred Labo, Bob Wynne, Steve Vining and Tommy Hale, who were properly attired in tights. They gracefully executed many difficult ballet steps to the amusement of the audience. The first prize was given to Vanessa Ed- wards for her singing performance. Gail Powers and Mary Deegan won the second prize for their origional songs. Jane Turner, last year ' s variety show winner, won third prize. The judges also awarded the Transyl- vania Ballet an honorable mention for their excellent performance. OCEAN ST. MARSHFIELD HUBBARDโ€™S CUPBOARD 29 MAIN ST. Prom? what is this word prom? In a world of tie-dyes and blue jeans, the tradition of the prom seems to be dying out. Despite these claims, the prom lives on at Marshfield Hi School. Last May 25th, the Rexicana was tastefully and beautifully decorated; the theme was Wear Your Love Like Heaven . The couples were delighted by the music p rovided by the Westwood High School Band. It is true that jeans are comfortable, but a girl is agreeably different in a fancy gown, and a din- ner jacket on a boy has more style than his usual patched pants and shirt. As examples see our Queen, Ann Shackleton, escort Bill Shanley, and her court, Paula Loughran, Sue Carty and Janet Anderson. The prom has no generation gap. While Mr. Abbott and Mr. Erickson kept the peace, Mr. Boczanowski snapped pictures and Mr. and Mrs. Romeo demonstrated the real way to dance. Anyone who was at the MHS 1970 Prom will remember what a beautiful event it was. 98 99 The Miracle Worker Cast Helen Keller Jutta Rossano Anne Sullivan Deborah Daneman Kate Keller Chris McKenna Captain Keller Roger Taylor James Keller Mike Fletcher Aunt Ev Kathy Burke Viney Jane Cushing Doctor Myles Sheehan Mrs. Anagnos Beverly Gunther Blind Girls Elaine Emerson Linda O ' Kelly Lisa Woodsum Martha Hayden Stage Manager Mary McAlister 102 104 RESTAURANT Chinese Polynesian Foods ORDERS TO TAKE OUT Please call 834-6691 - 834-6692 If you are unable to visit us, we will CATER TO YOUR HOME.
