reference ONLY Ventress Library 15 Library Plaza Marshfield, MA 02050 hMu 2 2 2SS NUMBER XIII VOLUME I 1965 TIDE MIND 1088 PUBLISHED by THE YEARBOOK STAFF MARSHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL, MARSHFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS 1 Mr. Edwin A. Martinson Superintendent of Schools 1953-1964 For twelve years a man familiar to all the students and townspeople has provided a leadership in Marshfield schools - Mr . Edwin A. Martinson. It takes a wise man to steer a course that includes the best of the two educational worlds: excellence and harmony. This Mr. Martinson has done with great success. During his tenure, he brought excellence in education to Marshfield. It was his sincere effort that he helped make the Marshfield schools a top educational system in Massachusetts. From the time we, the Class of 1965, began our first attempts at education in first grade, Mr . Martinson was hard at work to give us the best there was to to offer . His work followed us through elementary, junior high, and high school. And after twelve years he is leaving us with memories of all he has done. And for this, in deepest appreciation for his service to us and our town, we thank him! Dedication Histories make men wise; . . . the mathematics, subtile. - Francis Bacon Mr . Malcolm L . Pratt Through their teach- ing, our instructors have given us wisdom and per- ception. Through them- selves, they have instilled in us inspiration, character, and enthusiasm; these are the materials with which we must build our futuTe . We, the class of 1965, gratefully dedicate this yearbook to Mr, Malcolm L. Pratt and to Mr, John N. Erickson, Jr. in appreciation of their exemplary service to the youth of Marshfield. Mr. John N. Erickson, Jr. Administration Dr. Greene and the School Committee: Mr. Richard Ketchum, Mrs. Elizabeth Hatch, Dr. Lawrence Greene, Mr. David Ellis, Mr. Vincent Cohee, Mr. Frank Burridge . X ' This year has marked an important change in the administration of the Marsh- field school system; Mr. Edwin Martin- son, our Superintendent of Schools from 1953 to 1964, retired. Dr. Lawrence Greene, his successor, became our new Superintendent in December. Although Dr . Greene will initiate new programs and policies, his goal will re- main the same; to maintain the excellence of Marshfield’s educational system. The School Committee has been equally responsible with the Superintend- ents for the high quality of Marshfield ' s schools . Their foresight has given us our modern High School, the new Junior High, the Eames Way School, and the planned Daniel Webster School, The administration of the High School itself has also played a key role in our education. Mr. James Romeo, Principal, and Mr. Richard Burgess, Vice Principal, work together to maintain and improve the standards and spirit of Marshfield High School. The Class of 1965 wishes to express its gratitude to Mr. Martinson, Dr. Greene, the School Committee, Mr. Romeo, and Mr. Burgess. Through our years of Marshfield schooling, they have helped to give us lasting materials with which to build our future. N Ml moriam HER WAYS ARE WAYS OF PLEASANTNESS AND ALL HER PATHS ARE PEACE. With much- needed aid from our advisor, Mr . Gray, we successfully presented two one-act plays and a mixer with Sacred Heart. Since our confusing freshman year, we have grown in number and experience . Although we will miss the Class of 1965, we are eager to take its place. As sen- iors we will try to maintain the standards and spirit of MHS. Junior Class Officers: G. Gilbert, M. Patch, H. Stephens, D. Robicheau, P. Cappello, class advisor Mr. Paul Gray, R. White, L. Chris Harv ' ey Richard Carty Mary Harvey Janet Simmons John Harvey William O ' Flaherty Martha Harvey Mary Hansen After cluttering the corridors of MHS with myriads of posters proclaiming the wonders of our forthcoming play, the Jun- iors presented two dramas designed to enthrall an audience and inspire a player to heights of enactment. Directed by Mr. Paul Gray with the assistance of Mr. Richard Benoit, the plays went forward despite tons of makeup weighing down the brows of our heroes and heroines, causing some to forget a few lines . But all ' s well that ends well, as the cast says, The plays were fun, and finally did end well. D. Carty, J. Simmons, W. O ' Flaherty, M. Hansen. Freshmen Our first year at M.H.S. has provided us with many memories and experiences . When we entered in September, we felt we were taking an important step in our lives . While adjusting to this new experience, we tried to fit ourselves in with the standards of our teachers and upper- classmen . Now our freshman year is ended . We will soon be sophomores with a feeling of impor - tance and familiarity . And as the years go by, we hope to measure up to the achievements of the preceding years . We, the Class of 1968, wish the best of luck to the Class of 1965! Lynda Bennett, Susan Gavone, Mary Jane Anderson, Steve Marshall, Mr. Cesarini, Merrill Garside, Andres Abbondanza, Deborah Ames, Deborah Weston. Sophomores Finally we made it! We are sophomores! Our class has showed its strength in sports by supplying the varsity teams with many players . We have a growing treasury due to our money-making activi- ties . We were at every home football and basketball game selling candy. We gave the schoo l a fun-filled evening with our dance, the Turkey Kick. We showed our dramatic abilities in our sophomore prize speaking contest and our sopho- more class play. Our sophomore year has added to our growing knowledge and experiences . It has helped prepare us for the long road ahead. We, the Class of 1967, are look- ing forward to our last two years of high school, and we hope they will be success- ful and happy! Band This year, Mr. Cowgill has resumed his leadership of the band and Glee Clubs after a year ' s sabbatical in Germany, Mr, Leone, the band director, has lent zest and school spirit to the football games and assemblies at which the band plays lively popular tunes as well as traditional marches. In addition to the assemblies, the band presents Christmas, spring, and ex- change concerts with the Marshalairs each year . These give the people of the town, as well as the students, an oppor- tunity to enjoy the band ' s music. An indication of the band ' s high caliber is the large number of its members who participate in the District, All -State, and New England Music Festivals. This year, John Struble, Mary Ann Bennet, Fifi Heron, Eileen Reuell, Clifden, Ban- ner, Jeffrey Hodgkins, Patricia Heil, John Merrill, Ted Gentry, and Stephen Bissell played at the Festivals. Yearbook Advisers: Mrs. Idyla Etelman and Miss Elizabeth Ellard. The Tide 1965 For the Class of 1965, this year has signalled the change from de- pendence to in- dependence, from high school to col- lege or work. Al- though no shorter than any other year on the calen- dar, it seemed to pass more quickly through a rapid succession of dances, plays, classes, and ath- letic events . To the seniors, this TIDE represents the collected mem- ories and experi- ences of the last and best of our high school years . For the under- classmen, this book is also a rec- ord of 1965 . More important, it preserves the achievements of the Class of 1965 and challenges the underclassmen to do as well.
