But to you, Mrs. Brown, who greeted many of us as freshmen with a cheery yet puzzling ' ' Bonjourâ and who will- ingly guided us through our demanding junior year, we say Merci, Madame. And you Mr. Marshall, who pulled us through the Roman Empire to the Russian dictatorship and who taught us the right and wrong of sportsman- ship, we salute. All the days of our lives, we, the seniors, will be grate- ful for the many thoughts both of you have instilled in us . IN THIS DEDICATION li li 1 1 iiti A SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING Mr. William MacDonald, Chairman; Mr. Edwin A. Martinson, Superintendent; Mrs. Helen Simmons, Secretary; Mr. John T. Our school board members provide this cooperative effort and effective ed- ucational leadership in our community. To these dedicated, responsible people are we, the members of the Senior Class, thankful for their continuing con- tributions to an effective learning envi- ronment . The maintenance and management of the school plant and its facilities in addi- tion to providing professional leadership in the educational program and its re- lated services is the task which faces the administration of any secondary school . We, as individuals, hope to reflect the qualities of those people who work for and in an intelligent peaceful world . We trust that this TIDE will bring joy and happiness in the years of reflection. Our thanks go to all those who made this record possible, especially our advisers. Miss Elizabeth Ellard and Mrs. Idyla Etelman. As we crossed the threshold, we were coralled into the auditorium; we met our teachers, received our schedules, and entered a new world. Though the school was shaped like a block, it seemed more like a maze of confusing corridors. Mr. Scott helped us to disentangle ourselves and begin our tasks. First, we elected class officers. Then we launched two new projects- -selling coke at the games, and collecting class dues. Now with a sigh of relief, another freshman class appears, and we are sophomores! ROW 1; L. Gould, B. STUDENT COUNCIL Jeffrey Rowe President of the Southeastern Massachusetts Student Council Officers Secretary--Arlene Tibbetts Treasurer --Melissa Rich President- -Jeffrey Rowe Vice-President- -Joseph Marmai Adviser--Mr. John Cameron We Sponsor A April 26, 1961 OUR DAY consisted of an as- sembly in the morning and three periods of lectures given by peo- ple in the community. Topics covered the fields of employment: music, health, law, secretarial training, chemistry, and engi- neering . . . This year the coun- cil has a new adviser, Mr. John Cameron, who has done an excel- lent job in advising and super - vising our projects and activities. Our big project was hosting the Southeastern Massachusetts Stu- dent Council Convention on April 24, 1962. This convention at Marshfield proved to be an inter- esting and rewarding experience for all who attended. We were very proud of Jeffrey Rowe, our council president and also presi- dent of the Southeastern Massa- chusetts Student Council. THE DEBATING SOCIETY This newly organized group, under the direction of Mr. Richard Deasy, began debating November 9 . The debates were scheduled for every Thursday until March first. Recently the society debated the following resolution: Resolved; The fed- eral government should equalize opportu- nities for education by means of grants to the states for public schools . On November 15 the group attended an exhibition debate and dinner sponsored by Eastern Nazarene College . The society joined the South Shore Debate League. The state finals ended the debating year . Its sixteen members meet every Tuesday morning in the Audio- Visual room of the library. Pat McGuire is this year ' s captain. The club members provide various serv- ices: they show films, filmstrips, tapes, records; they perform minor repair work on the equipment; they assist in ordering films and cataloging. A club member is on duty in the Aduio- Visual room throughout the day. Mr. Paul Kelley of the faculty is in charge of this useful and growing de- partment . THE LIBRARY CLUB The library, under the capable direc- tion of Miss Woodward, has developed into a serviceable part of our high school. In only two years growing time, numer- ous books, both fiction and reference, have been added to the once-bare shelves . Extra services constantly supply the student body: the extensive READER ' S GUIDE, orientation in library use, inter-library loans, and the issuance of up-to-date reading lists periodically. The most satisfying accomplishment has been the ever-increasing interest in the Student Librarians Club. This organ- ization not only aids in the running of the library, but also plans programs such as the sale of Data -Guides and the assembly which presented Mr. Edward Rowe Snow, a local author. The Annual Book Fair, designed to en- courage reading, proved successful in every way for the third year . The students pored over the paperback books, made many selections and purchases, to the end that more reading interest was evident. Miss Woodward, Librarian, P. Smith, Secretary, P. THE NEWSPAPER CLUB October was organization month for the 1961-1962 Ram-bler, under the di- rection of two new advisers, Miss Gib- bons of the Commercial Department and Mrs. Saunders of the English Depart- ment . Editor Gerry Gannon presided over numerous meetings as plans got under way for tne first issue. Once the stories and articles were in and approved, the production staff took over, efficiently typing and setting up each page until work was completed. The finished result was well received by the student body. A small charge is made for each issue in order to prepare for a future printed edition. This goal is the second main ob- jective of the club, the first being to pre- sent the best newspaper possible to M.H.S. students. THE MUSIC GROUPS The Marshalairs Instead of a general chorus group as in former years, both a girls ' and a boys ' chorus organized in September. The girls vastly outnumbered the boys, but each group improved equally. The new set-up has created added musical interest among more stu- dents. The Marshalairs and Band performed at the annual Christmas program. Again in the spring they gave a joint performance to aid the school ' s music fund. The Southeastern Mas- sachusetts District Music Festival held in January at our own high school sparked the schedule. About five hundred talent- ed musicians representing forty-nine schools joined in giving two concerts at which orchestra, choral, and band groups per- formed. The gala event brought out the musical achievements of these young people. SONGS AND SOUNDS The Band ROW 1: J. Rowe, E. Ohrenburger, G. Sherman, P. Anderson. M. Cuprak, B. Sanborn, N. Emery, C. Pep rallies led the way to better school spirit and greater game attend- ance. At one rally, male cheerleaders assisted the girls in bringing the group spirits up to a high pitch. Another boost toward better school spirit was provided by the booklet of Marshfield High School cheers, edited by the cheerleaders and published by our business department. New uniforms and sweaters also added a new look and a zing to the squad. Majorettes; C. Heuser, H. Brandt, B. Coggeshall, Captain, D, Kent, D. dePourtales. Ready to marcli at the half! THE MAJORETTES By their performances during the 1961 school year, the Majorettes have made a fine impression on the entire school body. The time and effort that the girls spent in practice became readily appar- ent as they executed precision maneuvers and intricate marching routines . Their most enjoyable half-time performances provided an excellent diversion from the grueling football games and contributed much to the Rams ' successful season. Although the girls are always present at the games and the rallies, their efforts are not entirely directed towards sports . They participate annually in the Veterans Day Parade and in the Memorial Day Pa- rade. The Spring Concert is another an- nual event that is looked upon with great interest.
