JUN 0 9 201) NUMBER IX VOLUME I Ventress Library 1S Library Plaza Marshfield!, MA 02050 PUBLISHED by THE YEARBOOK STAFF JUN 09 2011 MARSHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL, MARSHFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS 1 96 1 TIDE Tht Marshes cf Our Town THE EDITORS SPEAK vx;cs Elizabeth ,avia Our 1961 TIDE is the record of our Senior year, the important year in which we have learned to be citizens of the world, members of the human community. World progress and modernization insist that we progress and mod- ernize. The staff has streamlined many of the book ' s pages. Discarding old - fashioned methods , adopting new techniques, we have attempted to include all aspects of our school life: curricular and co-curricular activities. We hope that the school and town com- munities will like the revised format. Of all those who have helped us we would like to thank especially Mr. Idyla Etelman, Literary Adviser, and Miss Elizabeth Ellard, Business Adviser. Deborah Mitchell, Susanne Clark, Co- Editors at work ! Co -Editors DEDICATION 5 ' W. ' ; Humor, kindness, warmth, and sincerity are in- gredients of true friendship- -and these are the quali- ties of two men who have taught us and associated with us, not only as teachers, but as friends. Mr. Harold Scott, our freshman adviser, our wise man of numbers, worked with us in our freshman activities and helped us to adjust to the exciting, confusing new ways Mr. Harold Scott of high school. He is a true friend, always at hand ! Mr. Richard Deasy, our friend and philoso- pher, a wise man of letters, exemplifies the high ideals of industry with his intense appli- cation to every problem. These two men have had an important in- fluence on our school lives, and so, in thanks and gratitude, we dedicate to them our 1961 TIDE. Mr. Richard Deasy Mr. Ellis, C. Rand, Mr. John M. Nagle, Jr., Mrs. Elizabeth S. Hatch, Mr. John T. Heald, Mr. William C. MacDonald. Learning to be citizens of any community, whether it be the community of the world or members of the human community, is part of the growing-up process. Each youngperson learns more readily through examples set by responsible dedicated people of the established community in which he lives. Our school board mem- bers are such individuals. They give of their time. energy, and initiative to serve the youth of our town. Through this service, they set the direction and pace for future town leaders. To them are we, the mem- bers of the Senior Class, duly grateful for all they have done to make our school years in Marshfield happy, constructive, and fruitful. Thank YOU and YOU and YOU! I THE SCHOOL BOARD ADMINIS TRATION Mr. James P. Romeo, Principal Mr. Edwin A. Martinson, Superintendent The rapport which exists between a community and its school administrative officers is a decisive factor in the success of its schools ' student bodies. Fortunate are we, the students of Marshfield High, that our administra- tors, Superintendent Edwin Martinson and Principal James P. Romeo, work devotedly in our behalf. Their interest covers every phase of our school life: academic, social, athletic, and moral. These two able and admirable men give us, however, more than their interest; they work with us in person as well as in spirit. It is through them and our teachers that we learn how to deal with problems, howto accept responsibilities, and how to face the world community. James G. Anderson Director of Athletics Mary Y. Seniors Gretchen Thomas, Joanne Shepherd, Ellen Houghton, Pam Smith, Deb Mitchell, and Carol Mor- row predict that next year’s team will bring to the school many victories. Although they lost the championship this year, the team feels confident that it will regain the title next year. Many thanks to our coach. Miss Vanasse, who spirited us to our victories. Cohasset 44 A first-quarter press allowed Marshfield to break its game with Cohasset wide open. With the aid of that manuever and the scoring of Marshall Da- vis, the Rams opened up a 25-9 first period lead. Coach John Erickson called off the press at that point, but Marshfield con- tinued to roll. Davis scored 14 of his 23 points in Lhe opening eight minutes. Paced by Andy Mercer and Pat McCarthy, who scored 14 and 12 points, the Skippers drew a little closer in the early minutes of the second quarter, but Marshfield found the range again and had a 44-23 lead at halftime. A 26-point third period gave Erickson a chance to use his sub- stitutes. Playing a portion of the third and all of the fourUi quar- ters, the young Rams did an ex- cellent job. In the last eight min- utes they outscored Cohasset, 17- Coach Erickson and Co- Captains Roger Studley and Marshall Davis discuss a coming game. ROW I: S. Hart, C. Nangle, C. Fletcher, G. Sherman, P. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL The season was mainly a victorious one, and Coach Vanasse hopes to have another good team next year since she will lose only three seniors: the co-captains and Donna Hynes. The girls ' basketball team started the year off by electing seniors Gretchen Thomas and Pat Doherty as co-captains. In the early part of the season they sur- prised themselves by beating their rival, Scituate, by 11 points after losing to their other rival, Duxbury. The prediction proved to be true since the team won nine games and lost only three. Co-captains Neville Fletcher, Ed Fonseca, and Robert Fernandes, along with William Davenport, were the four graduating seniors, leaving eight letter- men to carry on the 1961 team. Again Coach Reed and Coach Erickson look forward to a successful season, since they will field the experienced letter- men plus a number who have played in several games.
