Freedom is a personal matter. It is a talent just as much as music or painting. Life imposes a discipline on all our talents, if they are not continually exercised they wither. The history of human progress is the consciousness of freedom. From the time of the ancient Republics of Greece and Rome, there has been a constant battle between the forces of tyranny and those of liberty. In the American Republic , law and liberty united to build the greatest monument to freedom, Americans are a pioneer people. This country was settled and developed by people to whom even the hostile untamed space of the wilderness meant freedom. They conquered the Indians, floods, famines and all other limitations. Their talent for freedom was grown on the hills of New England, in the cotton fields of the South, on the wheat lands of the West, and in the rugged Rockies. We hope that our students will never relax their watchfulness over freedom. We hope there is never a vacation for freedom. We hope that we will always have free- dom to protect us. 5 S
