BUNYARD U. of O., B.S., M.Edg Guidance Director. Included in the senior counseling program is the manual dexterity test. Counselors Counseling Staff Is Enlarged The counselors have many tasks, foremost among them to work with the students who need discipline, to help the teachers to work better with the students, and to help young people grow and develop to the best of their ability. Although the duties of the counselors have not changed much this year, the increased enrollment of the school necessitated that the staff be increased. The new counselor, Mr. Leonard Kokes, assisted both Mr. Lorin Miller, Dean of Boys, and Mr. Donald Bunyard, guidance counselor. His job deals more directly, however, with the discipline of both boys and girls. Mr. Donald Bunyard, is also responsible for scheduling all-school testing, homerooms, programs con- cerning guidance and collegiate and vocational information. Students with more serious prob- lems are referred by the deans to him. The deans' job is different from that of the guidance counselor in that they are more con- cerned with attitudes and conduct of the stu- dents rather than their future. Miss Margaret Shannon and Miss Beverly Swink, Deans of Girls, besides being in charge of the discipline of the girls, are in charge of lockers, checking out of school, and student personal problems such as furnishing band-aids and safety pins. Mr. Lorin Miller and Mr. Leonard Kokes, Deans of Boys, have duties that are essentially the same as those of the Deans of Girls. They, too, assist with attendance, counsel students for adjustment, to the classroom, aid in student insurance and health programs, talk with stu- dents about their educational-program and vo- cational ambitions, and oversee student con- duct. Mr. Robert Alexander, who was this year promoted to Vice-Principal, is in charge of textbooks, attendance, student schedules, curri- culum, IBM data processing, withdrawals, the master schedule, and East Branch problems. Mrs. Eleanor Baker assists freshman Bill Counce in her homeroom, a newly instigated program. 1:-uv .

Principal Elmer Johnson Heads Marshfield With an ever-expanding and changing high school, Marshfield students are proud and for- tunate to have Mr. johnson as a friend, a disciplinarian, and a leader. As principal, he is a vital key to the story of a successful and productive school program. In his innovations to Marshfield-the vending machinesg the new, freer study hall programg and the student- written excuses-he has shown his faith in the students and his sincere interest in further developing their sense of responsibility. Dedi- cated to serving his community and school by enriching the lives of Marshfield students, Mr. johnson has merited the respect and esteem of all. Language Arts Students Begin Program Of Independent Study The students' abilities to express themselves verbally in conversation and composition were challenged by the Marsh- field English Department. Placement of the students in the various English programs was based upon capabilities in composition, grammatical understanding, and literature inter- pretation. Those students experiencing problems in English were placed in the basic program throughout their freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Average English students studied under the regular English curriculum. Students with a high aptitude who expressed a desire to learn received instruction in the honors English classes. Senior English students not planning to attend college studied practical English, whereas the college- bound students took advantage of the college preparatory and honors English programs. Now in its second year at Marshfield, Project English was taught in the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes. The project introduced curriculum in rhetoric, grammar, literature, and speech. Some students also initiated a program of independent study one period a week. This period was either spent in the library gathering source material or receiving special help from an instructor. Speech, journalism, reading labs, and world literature were again offered as elective courses of the English program.
