Most of this success was due to the leadership of the fine officers who directed the students this year. They were: Boyd Handelin, president, John Busterud, vice- president, Dixie Fortune, secretary, Dick Hanen, treasurer, Jack Koines, yell leader, Bette Knox, song queen, Claire Lyon, editor of Ma-Hi Times, and Eadith Heath, editor of the Mahiscan. To become a member of the Student Body, one must buy a Student Body Ticket, which is sold at the first of the school year. By buying a ticket the student receives the following benefits: free admission to all home athletic games, discounts on all out- side games, voting privileges, ability to hold offices, deduction on annual, participation in all student body activities. Several successful dances were held by the Student Body this year for the enjoy- ment of its members. The business of the Student Body is very well handled by the student council, a body made up of the president, vice-pres- ident, secretary, and treasurer of the Stu- dent Body, together with the four presidents of the classes. Mr. Williams is the advisor for this council. ' 6 P '::-f P GLASSES 1938 MAHISCAN 1938 ezzior Glass gfisfory Approximately four years ago, which would be September, 1934, another class of freshman entered Marshfield Hi. Now, four years later, we stand transformed with all the dignity becoming Seniors. The Senior class began the year by electing Bill Dyer, president, Bill McFadden, vice-president, .Dixie Fortune, sec re ta ry, Patti Baer, treasurer, and Ralph lngman, ser- geant-at-arms, and Mrs. Peck was chosen our advisor. In the second semester Marine Haverly was elect- '8 Mfhdde ed to succeed Patti Baer as treasurer. Our senior play, The Yankee King by Edwin Day which was presented April l l, was a great success, an outstand- ing feature in our four years of participation in school activities. During our senior year we also took part in many other events. Our ball, the most anticipated event of the year, with originality in decoration and program, indeed, proved the class outstanding. Then, as the final milestone in our high school careers, came a very excellent commencement program. To Mrs. Peck, our advisor, we wish to extend our thanks and deepest appreciation. She not only was the backbone of our class, but worked con-' stantly to make our senior year the most enjoyable one of our lives. We've had a fine time at Marshfield, We leave with reluctance yet wel- come the opportunity to step into the world. We thank our teachers too for their assistance, and hope our successes in life will be worthy of their efforts. Dyer Fortune 7 Addison, William C. Band ...,.,.........,........ There were approximately one hundred mern- bers who were equally interested in school activities, but were, when called upon to perform, in perfect cooperation with other members of the class. The boys went out for track, boxing, football, basketball, glee club, and different boy's organizations in the school. The girls were active in Hysoerie, Glee Club, Triple Trio, and Girls' League and similar recreations. The Junior play, Come Out of the Kitchen, was presented under the direction of Miss Swafford during the fall and was an outstanding success. l7 1938 MAHISCAN 1938 Luzior Glass SECOND SEMESTER-1937 Abel, June Anderson, Bernice Anderson, Robert L. At the beginning of the semester we began our work by electing Dick Ring, president, Donald January, vice-president, Betty McQuiston, secretary, and LeRoy Boyd, serg- eant-at-arms. For our class adviser we chose Miss Hughes who has work- Boyd D.vi. ed with us with untiring efforts. Our class is well represented in the sport life of the school. The boys have participated both in football and basketball, and with their abilities our class should make sport history. We also have won our place in scholarship, dramatics and such. One of the chief ambitions of the class was to put forth an enjoyable assembly for the student body and faculty alike. This class proved to have possibilities for the future for our assembly was well received by our entire audience. Striving always for good sportsmanship and better personalities, we hope to uphold the traditions of M.H.S. The Times with seventeen creditable issues this year is the means of keeping in close touch with school affairs and also affords valuable training in journalism for those who are interested in news publication. At the state contest for high school publications held at Eugene the first of the year, our paper took second place. Editor in Chief .....,....,,..,,,, Claire Elaine Lyon Society Editor ..,.. ..,.. ESTEB 28 1938 MAHISCAN 1938 Busterud Watson Clark Larson ebafe A remarkable opportunity for oratorical ability to reveal itself was found in the debate team, under the direction of Miss Tedrow. The goal is to develop straight thinking for presentation of an argument in a persuasive, pleasing manner. The team has held practice debates with Myrtle Point, North Bend, and Coquille which were non-decisive but gave each member an opportunity to display his talent. The question this year was: Resolved, that the several states should adopt a unicameral system of legislature. The team went to McMinnville to observe the tournament held at Lin- field College. Their own tournament was held February twenty-sixth in the Senior High School Auditorium in Marshfield. Members of the squad which represented our school were Dorothy Larson, Juanita Clark, Leslie Jane Nordahl, Dorothy Watson, and John Busterud. 29 'I938 MAHISCAN 1938 ysoerie Hysoerie, the High School's oldest literary society, was organized in l9l4 for upper class girls. A new system of choosing members was inaugurated this year by Miss Stephens, advisor, eliminating the old method whereby membership was gained solely by tryouts before the as- sembled organization and a vote taken, this new system is based on scholarship and ability. At the beginning of each semester a girl must prove her ability in reading, music, or dramatics to gain consideration and must stand high in scholarship. Activities this year included a dance and a very entertaining assembly where the most talented members are given a chance to perform. Officers for the first semester were Jeanne Beaumont, president, Patti Baer, vice-president, Leyola Teaney, secretary, Betty Dano, treasurer. Officers for the second semester included Leyola Teaney, president, Betty Harrington, vice-president, Dixie Fortune, secretary, Dorothy Meyers, treasurer, Merrien Miller, Sergeant-at-arms. ATHILIETIICCS 1938 MAHISCAN 1938 Osborne Strahl Martin Landes, A. Gffhfefics The athletics department of the school is one whose function is to foster conditions that are conducive to the health of the students registered for that work. -Marshfield student body should feel especially grateful to the coaching staff who have the responsibility of maintaining the reputation of the school in competitive events They are Fred P. Osborne, Football and Trackg Newton Strahl, Ass't Foot- ball Coachg Bruce Martin, Freshman Football and Boxingg and, AI Landes, Basketball and Golf. 4l l938 MAHISCAN 1938 gboibaffg With only green, inexperienced material with which to work, Coach Fred P. Osborn succeeded in putting together a team which, although small and light, went through a tough schedule and came out second in conference competition. Coach Osborn expressed the opinion that the team had the best spirit and determination in years. Only three Iettermen, Ted Briggs, veteran line-man, Dale Sommers and Ralph lngman, both backfield men, returned to form a nucleus for the squad. Jerome Hanson and Harold Chaney, substituted by Jack Caderette, com- pleted the backfield and greatly assisted the Pirates in their playing. Those who played on the line and took many a beating to put the back- field men into the clear and wreck the running attack of the enemy were- Ted Briggs, John McCarthy, Dan Puckett, Sidney Samuelson, Bob Forrester, Bud Marker, lrwin Whittaker, Rodney Samuelson, John Busterud, Don Jan- uary and Art Harbaugh. Marshfield placed six men on all county, two on the lst team-Ted Briggs, and Dale Sommers, and 4 on the second team--Ralph lngman, John McCarthy, Dan Puckett and Rodney Samuelson. This year Ted Briggs, all county guard, won the 20-30 c-up award and Dale Sommers, halfback, was elected captain by his teammates. Receiving no glory but playing just for the team were Harry Fredericks, 42 1938 MAHISCAN 1938 goofbaff Russell Lillie, Barney Cade, Floyd Clower, Lyle Collver, Ted Riedle, Pat Cousins, Mathew Avsec, Ronald Handley, and Bernon Buckingham. Too, the managers, Jim Haynes and Grendall Hawes, very satisfactorily took care of their assignments. Assistant Coach Strahl helped greatly by building up reserves and assist- ing in all around football with the team. Bruce Martin coached a freshman squad in anticipation of future foot- ball stars for Marshfield High. When the squad answered call to practice in late November of last year, there was only one letterman, Walt Smith, on hand. The remainder of the squad, numbering IO, had practically no experience. Coach Landes had a job on his hands but he went to work with a definite goal in mind-to have a strong promising combination in smooth working order by the end of the season. Now that this season is closed the Pirates and their coach are confidently looking forward to success in the l938-39 season. Seven lettermen will form a fine nucleus for next season's squad. They are: Dick Hanen, Dick Davis, Jack Caderette, forwards, Jack Bessee and Jack Lilieberg, centers, Jerome Hansen, 44 1938 MAHISCAN 1938 askefbaff and Bob Chiene, guards. Another lad who isn't a letterman but a fine prospect is Harold Chaney. Those advancing from B squad to the A squad are: Bill Wall, Tom Bennett, Dick Ring, Russell Lillie, Evan Bone, and Ivan Ireland.
