Secretary-Treasurerg John Dickkut, Presidentg Nile Brennecke, Vice Presidentg Bill Vana, Advisor. O The Seniors of 1958 have worked hard and steadily to raise funds for their class project. Our first job was to sell stationery with a picture of the school on it. This netted a profit of about S81.00. Our second activity was sponsoring bake sales. The class was divided into sections and each section was in charge of two sales. These were held on the last Saturday of each month. Another activity was selling popcorn at the home basketball games. This was popped during the sixth period on the Friday afternoon before the game by volunteers or any other hungry helpers. All in all this has been a very profitable year for everyone. pw ' President john Dickkut distributes school station- ery to fellow workers Kaylene Gallentine and LeRoy XVillim. 35 9 O I Remember Soph. FIRST BASEBALL SEASON A SUCCESS Marshalltown's Bobcats, coached by Bill Vana, completed their first season of baseball in over a generation this year. It was a down and up season, which saw the Bobcats finish with a good 9-6 record, Marshalltown started very slowly, losing five of the first six games. This poor beginning seemed to be due chiefly to the lack of con- sistency in pitching and poor hitting. The brightest spot of these six games was an un- assisted triple play by Sonny Finch in the opener at State Center. Gene I-Iorn and Dick Mahle began to come around and started to pitch some superb ball midway in the season. At the same time the batters began to get some distance, and the Bobcats ended the regular season winning the next four games for a 5-5 record. The 'Cats continued their fine play. to romp through three games in the Sectional tournament and one in the District, before falling in the District final. Marshalltown's basic strength seemed to be in fielding, where the infield, led by Sonny Finch, topped the attack. Half of this squad is ineligible for future high school competition, having graduated, but there is some strength remaining, which could prove the foundation for another top team. Coaches for the sophomores were Bill Vana and Ev Coch- rane. SOPH. INIANAGER XY 7 The sophs opened the season against clasSY XY'est XY'aterloo OIIEIIEQJIIQQNG and the Cats fell with a thud. The following week they came through for a tie in a defensive battle with Grinnell. In the RUN I-OHS W-15 this 16355 f0P following game Ames slipped past the Cats. Tama and East flight sophomore manager. Waterloo then ran over the Marshalltown team. The Cats then found themselves to edge Toledo juvenile Home. After a week and a half delay, because of the flu, the Bobcats whipped Newton. Near the end of the season, sophomores Steve Coon. jim Burns. Karl Brennecke, and john Niederhauser saw limited duty with the varsity squad to provide added depth at some positions. There were several pretty good boys on the Soph squad and they will be playing a lot of ball in the future. SOPI-I. Eight of this year's games were won or lost by less than five points. As major accomplishments. the Bobcats finished with a I5--I season record, were rated the top team in the central part of the state. finished second in the tight CIC, finished the fourth straight year undefeated at home against con- ference foes, and squeaked by Ames twice. Trementlous spirit and a great starting five, backed by a strong bench, were the main reasons for this year's success. Chuck Nelson saw a great deal of action during the year, starting in a great part of the games. Rich Wfharton, Dave Hansen, Dave XVildung, and Dave Cole also saw starting action. However, at the end of the season Coach Cochrane found a relatively small, fast team which worked well together. This combination of john Dickkut, Dick Rhiner, Larry St. john, Sonny lfinch, and' Allan Rudison completely bottled up Ottumwa and scored at will in the season finale to roll to a 29 point halftime lead and finish their work for the evening. The Cats were also particularly impressive in home games with Oskaloosa, the CIC Champs, and Des Moines Roosevelt, the Des Moines City Series champions. Other nights they had great difficulty in finding the shooting range, as was the case at Newton and Oskaloosa, costing the Cats a conference title, and against West Wfaterloo, ending a 38 home game win streak. Although eight of the fourteen boys on this year's squad are graduating, the prospects for next year's team appear to be bright. Most of the juniors on the 57-58 squad saw a great deal of action and some talented sophomores will be moving up. There will again be height, speed, and experience in the ranks, along with some great shooting ability. However, they had an S-2 record in conference play to gain second place behind Ames. Probably the highlight of the season would be a home victory over Ames. The Little Little Cyclones had absorbed only one defeat during the year. The MHS Sophs completely dominated the game to crush Ames by 21 points. The following night the Bobcats were defeated by the Gladbrook varsity in a close, hard-fought game which stretched through an overtime. Ron Zwemke and Dave Lawrence, lefl, were the offensive leaders for the second year club as they led the league scoring most of the year. However, they were pushed hard by their team- mates, and Scott McCloud in particular, made great improvements at the end ot the year. All these boys will be fighting hard for positions on next year's varsity and. with this YC3f,5 juniors, could mold into another great team. The program is operat- ing at full capacity, using all available facilities. Bad- minton, basketball, bowling, softball, table tennis, ten- nis, touch football, and volleyball are the activities included in the year-around program. Al is also in charge of the gymnasts, a group of boys who competed in three meets .this year. Skill at the side-horse, parallel bars, and other such things is required of these boys. A The local boys came in fourth of seven schools in a meet held at the State University of Iowa fieldhouse on December 7. Other meets were held in February and March. There is also a group of boys who work out a couple of times a week at weight-lifting. This helps a lot toward developing their bodies for competition in other sports. Perry practice a n the parallel bars. Nile Brennecke and Larry Hall were the two returning lettermen for the 1958 Golf Team. Brennecke lettered as a sophomore and again last year as a junior, Hall lettered last year as a sophomore. Chuck Badgley, David Hemphill, and Dick Stevens also gave the Bobcats good support. There were a number of others who helped push the top boys even higher. This year the golf team played Newton twice, Grinnell twice, Boone twice, lildora twice, and Ames once in dual meets. They participated in the Little Cyclone Invitational at Ames. The Bobcats also entered the Dis- trict Tournament in the State Tournament series. The Bobcats also had single meets with West XY7aterloo, Cedar Rapids, Wfashington, and Tama. The season started the second week in April. Dick Mahle, Craig Carlson, Dick Brown, Gary McCormack, and Don Phillips pro- vided a good nucleus for this year's squad.
