They knew it was that group of talented musicians known as the Marshalltown High School Orchestra. The orchestra first appeared in the impressive Christmas program The Christmas Apple presented to the public Sunday, December 14. The following Friday, they participated in the traditional Christmas assembly adding much to the spirit of Christmas by playing many of the old familiar carols. This music was also recorded for KFJB and was broadcast during the holiday season. During the winter and spring months the musicians were busy slaving over the music for the musical festival held with the two Waterloo schools in Marshalltown April 15 and 16. There were times when Beethoven's 5th Symphony or Tschaikovsky's Valse seemed impossible to master, but due to the co- operation and hard work of the orchestra members the impossible was accomplished. The festival music was also performed for assemblies in both junior and Senior High. This year, the orchestra was under the direction of Miss Lois Wiese. If her first year at M.H.S. is any indication of what will follow, Marshalltown will have a successful orchestra for years to come. On the Thursday before Homecoming the student body cast ballots for choice of its queens. I At the annual Thursday night pep rally something new was added. Instead of the usual trek to Franklin Field for the burning of the dummy a big parade was held. This parade was led by the car which carried the Homecoming Queen candidates. Since the identity of the queen had been kept a big dark secret up to this time Carol Henze head cheer leader at M.H.S. announced the results of the previous election at Franklin Field. The Homecoming Queen of 1948 was Miss Helen Knodle, While her majesty and court were assisted from their car to the side of the cheer leaders, the huge crowd witnessed the burning of the dummy. After this tradition had been carried through, the strains of On M.H.S. could have been heard for blocks through the brisk, fall air of this memorable evening which brought 1948 Homecoming to a thrilling beginning. The Homecoming assembly on Friday morning carried through the theme of the well know radio program, Queen For a Day. Sal, jean, Helen, Gloree, and Wanda all told what they wished if they could be chosen queen for a day. Of course Queen Helen's wish was granted. The cheer leaders then took over the assembly, and the student body was led in many Bobcat yells. After the G.A.A, worked, hard and long on decorations, the field was finally dressed in bright array for the big occasion. The Pep Club made large blue pom-poms for all of its members and in this way they too con- tributed to making Homecoming the big success that it was. Finally THE NIGHT of nights came. The M.H.S. hand marched on to the field in their colorful red and blue uniforms. A few moments later the queen and her four lovely attendants arrived in a beautiful red con- vertible. At last the M.H.S. Bobcats took the field, Now the great Homecoming of 1948 was in the making. The crowning ceremony took place on the field at the half time. Miss Betty Varnum, last year's queen, crowned Miss Knodle, who reigned over the festivities. The Homecoming Dance was held at the V.F.W. ballroom immediately following the game. Thus ended the Homecoming of 1948 in perfect fashion. l54l QDUEEN HELEN Wanda George lean Turner AXNID ATTIENIDANTVS 'N T' Glofienne Iobmon lffhilebill ueen Helen Knodle Sal Mefformark IBS ig' ,. ..',1- U I . , In 5 V 'L-A r 1' ' 0 :km 5 'n ll' M QQ- 1 y l -25 Q. it A pause for a drrnk of Krck a Poo joy Iurce Mammy and Pappy Yokum Pat Mrnner and Brll Burnett Y Scene of Hilarious Sadie Hawkins Dance On November 27 the thrrd floor of the Y served as a scene of Dogpatch Hrlarrty It was on thrs evenrng at 7 29 Dogpatch Trme that the Senror Hr Y Club began therr annual Sadre Hawkrns Dance Krckapoo joy Jurce and Preserved Turnrps were provrded as the delrghtful refreshments of thrs gala occasion The marn attractrons however were the grrls wrth therr skrrts whrch were far from havrng that new look In fact most of those present were sure that Jack Day Frank Ryder and Jack Berg had become over eager wrth therr scrssors' Marryrn Sam who was jrm Bagnall hrtched many happy couples wrth the help of hrs capable pranrst Eugene Peterson Drck Smrth actrng as Drsk jockey provrded plenty of platter chatter The real hrghlrghts of the evenrng were the brg electrons so nobly MC ed by those two genral gentlemen strrctly from Dogpatch Bob Qbetter known as Robert L J Anderson and Frank fFunkj Ryder Chuck Gordanrer wrth hrs very authentrc costume and a real lrve prg was unanrmously elected Harrless joe Sal McCormack was chosen Wolf Gal whrle Jacky Malloy won the trtle of Tenderlref Errckson Dean Elder was crowned the mrghty Fearless Frostrck Cand rt rs not a mrspellrngj jrm Mendenhall was selected Lone some Polecat although he had a date for the evenrng The honor of Mammy and Pappy Yokum went to Pat Mrnner and Brll Burnett Stan Cozzr and Earleen Gordanrer rergned over the party as the one and only Lal Abner and Darsy Mae The occasron proved to be a success Harrless Joe Gordanrer and hrs prg fav r 'f . nr rv . . . -, , . . . . . . . . ,, . n - r x ' - . rr u . ,, . . . . . . . . . . . The Wheel of Activity Devolves Around 'The I-lub' A long desired dream of the student body was finally realized in '47-'48. At last a youth center! The problem of a location was solved when the Fraternal Order of Eagles donated the rooms on the first floor of their building to our cause. After this accomplishment, definite plans were made and, under the direction of the Student Senate, procedure was taken to develop a constitution. The name for the organization was determined by a contest of which Student Senate was -the judge. Emerging victoriously was The Hub. Finally, after decorating all day, the grand opening was held the night of November 8, with people from Junior High, Senior High, and St. Mary's attending. Since that successful opening night, The Hub has been operating in full swing Monday, Wednesday, and Satur- day nights under the supervision of Student Senate which takes complete charge of governing our youth center. The rooms of The Hub include a dance room, possessing a new ,juke box, a snack room, having a soft-drink bar and other refreshments, and a third room for ping-pong. Although this popular spot has been in operation for only several months, The Hub has already proved to be the center in the wheel of events of Marshalltown 'teen agers. ,fs- The main attraction at Marshalltown's Hub is dancing it seems. It looks like MHS goes all out for it. DBIJDIBS 151i':llIill!Bl'll8lIIl CIIHIIQBS l'lillldS During the school year of '47-'48 the high school paper, Pebbles, saw the coming and going of three different staffs. Of course, the object of this change, which occurred every 12 weeks, was to give more students positions on the staff. The first staff found a rather difficult road in publishing its first edition, but as time went on the paper showed definite improvement. Ask any journalism student about his first work on Pebbles-He's sure to say that experience is the best teacher. All students in journalism are Seniors and have had little or no previous work on any scholastic press. One of the first and perhaps the hardest of all points for these students to learn was that deadlines must be set-and met. Each staff worked its hardest, and Pebbles was a school paper which the students and faculty of M.H.S. could well be proud of in 1948. Co-editors-Mary Kay Pitzer and Jim Mendenhall. Through the combined efforts of all students on this first staff of Pebbles, the sweepstakes award at Drake University was received by M.H.S. This meant that Pebbles had been rated No. 1 in competi- tion with other publications of the same size and type. It was during the reign of this staff that nine students attended the National N.S.P.A. convention which was held in Cleveland, Ohio. Staff number two came into power with the highest hopes of improving Pebbles and making it the best ever. Each member of this staff worked hard, and Pebbles did improve. Work on Post Script began during this period, and this made many staff members work twice as hard and long. Nevertheless these six editions were ones of which we could be proud. With 24 weeks of practical experience behind them, the third and last staff members took their positions. These stu- dents, trying to remember the good ideas and the mistakes which had been previ- ously made, published the last editions of the 1948 year. This staff started a fairly new thing when it had many students get and write up interviews with promi- nent citizens of Marshalltown. Making a practice of minding other people's business, our reporters made good use of their noses for news. Student Senate Governs at M I-1 S Student Senate, the governing body of MHS, is made up of home room presidents, class presidents, club heads, and representatives of band and journalism. Fred Bogaert headed this organization assisted by Helen Knodle, vice- president and joan Kendall, secretary-treasurer. In 1947-1948, besides voicing student opinion to the school executives, this organization was responsible for set- ting up, naming, and operating the Hub, a youth center sponsored by the Eagles Club of Marshalltown. Other important functions of the senate included the planning of Homecoming, done by the Activities Commit- tee composed of Fred Bogaert, Gary Burke, Carol Henze, Katherine Hulsizer, Helen Knodle, Harold McGehee, Jacky Malloy, and Gerald Trobaugh. Plans for the Homecoming dance were executed by the Dance Committee on which Bill Berger, Fred Bogaert, Bill Burnett, Jacky Glass, Katherine Hulsizer, Sal McCormack, Phyllis Morgan, and Ben Whitehill served. On the Assembly Committee were Bob Anderson, Fred Bogaert, Bill Burnett, Dean Elder, Tom Ingledue, Joan Kendall, joan Reese, and Jean Rowley, who along with the faculty committee outlined the assemblies for the year. Carol Henze, Jacky Malloy, Fred Bogaert, Jean Mackey. Broadway I-lit Successful fall Dlav The ever popular play Merton of the Movies, written by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly, was selected for the all high school fall play. This story revolves around a typical small town boy who wants to become an actor and by selecting an ideal finally achieves this goal. Merton worked as a delivery boy in Mr. Gash- wiler's general store in Simsbury, Illinois, before quit- ting to begin his movie career. Elmer Huff, Merton's best friend, just couldn't understand Merton's odd antics of late. Neither could Mr. Gashwiler who caught Merton proposing to a dummy in his store. To share his enthusiasm for movies was Tessie Kearns, who keeps posted on all the gossip of the movie world and doesn't especially care for the Jeff Baird comedies. ' After saving enough money to make the trip to the movie world, Merton finds acting is much more difficult than he expected. With the help of the Montague girl, who Merton believes is Beaulah Baxter, his ideal, he receives a chance to demonstrate his ability of acting before Sigmond Rosenblatt. After Merton's failure with seniors acting the Montague girl finally convinces Jeff Baird that Merton could be useful in comedies. Although -this took ffm f Jacky Malloy, Fred Bogaert Merton quite sometime to realize that comedies play an important part, he finallv 'becomes a success in them. As the curtain falls, Merton reports to the Silver- screen Magazine says of the Montague girl, She is my best pal and I might add my severest critic. Amos G. Gashwiler Elmer Huff ...... The Cats not only rated as the Champs of the Central Iowa Conference, but also won the distinction of sharing first place as the top team of the state. Stan Cozzi, Dick Bloomquist, and Al Elder won All-State honors, while all of the Cats won births on the All- Conference teams. MARSHALLTOWN 26 DOWLING 0 The Bobcats opened their successful season by down- ing a rough Dowling team 26-O. The Cats indicated a great deal of power, but showed that much more practice was needed. The backfield play of Stan Cozzi and Emory Eichorn was sensational, along with lineman Tom Evans. MARSHALLTOWN 28 GRINNELL 0 The next week the Cats journeyed to Grinnell to begin Conference play and wiped out the Tigers 28-0. Bloomquist, the mighty tackle, rested most of the game on the bench as a result of a shoulder injury in the Dowling game, however, the Cats held the Tigers scoreless and showed a great deal of offensive power. The highlight of the game was when Al Elder, center, intercepted a pass and ran 60 yards for a touchdown. MARSHALLTOWN 13 BOONE 0 The Cats withstood miserable rain and a miserable first half as the Toreadors came knocking three times. Late in the second quarter the Cats found themselves and had little trouble from then on. MARSHALLTOWN 38 OSKALOOSA 0 On their fifth meeting of the season the Cats had little trouble downing the Osky Indians. In this game the subs found their chance to shine, Dobbins, Petrie, and Stevens carried the brunt of the attack for the subs in the fourth straight conference victory. Coach Dean began in November to build his '48 team around his 7 returning lettermen. Along with these lettermen 11 more boys were added to round out the varsity squad. The Cats ending in a tie for second place in their conference rolled up a total of 7-11 points against the 651 of opponents. Each player gave all he had to offer all of the time for the betterment of the team. This factor along with the fine sportmanship showed some of the few reasons why the Cats had such a successful season. The Bobcat squad supported by team players proved what a basketball team working together could do and left the fans amazed after many a game. Marshalltown began its campaign against Iowa Falls by downing them 31-28 and then went on to defeat Roosevelt C. R., Perry, and Newton, their first Con- ference victim, before being bounced down the Con- ference ladder by losing to Grinnell and a heartbreaker to Boone. During Christmas vacation the Cats again began their mighty avalanche defeating Cedar Falls 53-32 and then going on to gather up some more wins over Nevada, Oskaloosa, Ames, and Newton, before Grin- nell and Boone again spoiled the Cat rush. Stalled but not stopped the Cats overpowered Nevada, Oskaloosa, and Ames again in their second meetings. The final scheduled game of the season against the Ottumwa Bulldogs left the fans with a good taste in their mouths even though the Cats were defeated in an overtime 39-37. The Cats played good ball all the way and turned in what might be called their best performance of the season. When tournament time rolled around the Cats won a district tournament title downing Cedar Falls again 39-55. In the first game of the sub-state the Cats made a poor showing of themselves against Loras of Dubuque and so ended their cage season with a 37-26 defeat. Looking ahead the Cats will have only three of the twelve lettermen returnirg, but these were all on the starting five. Much can be expected of those returning as much has been expected from the lettermen returning in previous years, 1971 'YS 1 ,fe 1, 99 i RUDISON BECKER qwcapp Hasty Reasonable Beaming Honest Relaxed Booster Hopeful Responsive Brainy WHITEHILL STEVENS SMITH Willing Spirited Shy Winner Sportsman Sincere Worker Successful Striving ng-.1 Isgrlg up for a shot xn the Iowa Falls game Russne rebounds agaznst Boone hvans gets the jump agamst the Nevada man Evans 15 ready to flre away on the Ames court The game IS also played on the bench CONFIJRENCE STANDINGS Boone Marshalltown Grinnell Oskaloosa Ames Newton X W L 8 2 6 4 ' 6 4 6 4 2 8 2 8 giT 4f f Wi ? l? Although the group started out ast fall with only a small enrollment of members, throughout the year they have radually added more junior college students to their drama nest. The young enthusiasts have performed successfully four dramatizations hroughout the college year. A Our Hearts Were Young and Gay was the three-act comedy chosen by he group for the colleges fall play. The story displays the troubles and exciting mbitions of youth with heartwarming sympathy and humor. Mid-semester the dramatists decided to rehearse two oneaacts, Cabbages and 'Trysting Place, to appear in several small towns for acting experience and to urther the interest of high school students in our Marshalltown junior College. he shows have appeared in several towns this winter and spring and have been eceived with great applause and encouraged to come back again. Cabbages is the humorous play of a simple Germany family, the Gross- eiers, who struck oil on their tiny farm and became rich overnight. It takes a amily tree and a lot of convincing talk from Papa and the daughter Tildy before ama Grossmeier realizes that a sudden inflow of money cannot change their ifelong customs and habits. The one scene of Trysting Place centers around a large couch in the lobby f a hotel upon which three pairs of various aged lovers vow their undying affec- 'ons at one time or another, and behind which one unfortunate love-sick boy is orced to hide for most of the play. Ten Little Indians the stage play adapted from the book and movie And hen There Were None by Agatha Christie, was presented by the Cillegiate layers as the annual spring play. Having done several comedies, the club de- ided this three-act murder-mystery would be Something new and unusual to at- mpt. They ran the show two consecutive nights with great success. A rather large rowd received the cast's superb performance both evenings. It takes a hardworking group of actors and actresses to produce a good play, ut looking for a few minutes behind the settings and side wings, it may be ob- rved that it takes an ambitious and interested director and industrious stage crew J really put a play in the front ranks. We pay tribute to Miss Houghton and ll of the technical crews for the wonderful job they have done this year. Perhaps the Collegiate Players most cherished and complimentary achievement f the year was their winning at the Iowa State ,lunior College Festival and Con- st held at Drake University this spring. The Collegiate Players drama club has made a great record this year with its of the drama club.
