194 5 FOOTBALL SEASON A squad of sixty enthusiastic, although rather in- experienced, candidates reported for senior high football workouts late in August, 1945. judging from the now' known results of their efforts, it would appear to some that football at M.H.S. had slowed down a bit if compared to the tw'o pre- vious seasons. However, six good victories cannot be belittled or ignored. ill. H. S. 33 -Hfzmptwz 0 Although Hampton had a nice team, they didn't haye a chance as Dick Meltyedt and Harold Bate sole romped with the ball and Rohde was a ball of fire at his end position bigns of inexperience showed here and there signs that pointed to the end of the long victory string The only unhappy incident of this game w as Batesoles leg injury an accident that was to prose costly to the team H C :mm The Grinnell Tigers were no obstacle as they growled but failed to bite the Bobcat xictory string that now totaled twenty one wins in a row Batesoles previously minor injury became serious as far as the team was concerned w hen his leg w as re injured Bob McK1bbxn was shifted to fullback and proceeded to pile up yards Abney at center Kyormoe at quarter back and sophomore btan Cozzi served notice that they would be hard t handle H f Al i It happened' Some pessimist has said that all gooc things must end A number of real mis Yy il 62525 ykll lv i A fortunes piled up finally to defeat a Bobcat foot- ball team after nearly three seasons of glorious victories. I These misfortunes were a good Ames team, the absence of Batesole from the line up the absence of Rohde from the line up and a cold wet field resulting on our part in extremely untimely fumbles We fumbled on two short kickoffs and again tn our two yard line to present Ames with an easy touchdown Later after driving for 75 vards we fumbled on the l yard line to throw away an easy chance to score It would appear that we gaye the game aw ay since the Little Cyclones really didnt blow yery hard at least until after the games H S 77 Bootle' With a fine and dangerous passing attack the Boone Torreadors threw exerything at us but the bull and the coach s hat Their bombardment net ted them two touchdowns but that wasnt enough Our Mellows was the best pass receiyer on the field that day as we did some passing of our own Our entire team put it out to push Boone into submission It w as a thrilling and deserung victory Bernstein was tough at his guard post Batesole missed another game R Il I lcroy Rohclc Charlcs Bcrnstcin Don Abncy Bill Xxlllfllllll Bill ltlci Rogcr Finch Cl'lll'lLS Mellows Dcan McM1l1on Rm Rich Finch Dick D wson Dick Mcltycdt Bob Mclxibbin Bill lxyormoc Hun ld Bitesolc Bud Cozzi 'loin Vcatson Dc n Huston Mac Nclxibbin R Dic Buntin 'Iom Fosttr lck Pctric Rod MCDonncll Conch Lole Dick Berkley Ben XX hitchill lwldic Nchmicdcl im Csirk Bill XX illis minigcr cf' 'TL' T1' X ml Nw gs yhr 8 fd 'Q N Q15 rzffs-'swaps r? 3 c cf it W 'S' - Pugt SIXI1 lfl: AI. .
