Other programs feature guest speakers. singers, and instrumentalists. Some in this category that have become almost traditional are the team of Scott and Austin, and Otto Schact who come back again and again by popular demand. High school students show their talents by presenting plays. vocal, and instrumental numbers for assemblies, The Rhythm Kings, high school dance band, presented popular selections for one program, A special assembly was held for the awarding of band and orchestra letters, Students were shown three full length movies f One Hundred Men and a Girl, Wells Fargo, and The Gladiator ---as well as several shorter ones. Who Wouldn't Love Us- Der Feuhrer Speaks. Heil Hinshaw The Gangs All Here GY Lands Blow Post Script Takes World Tour Everything from chorus girls to Cannibals was depicted by Post Script in its annual sales promoting assembly, A program, written and directed by Mildred Grossman and Ioyce Bryant, presented scenes from all over the globe and thus took the audience on a round-the-world tour. Ioe Tye acted as Master of Ceremonies and informed the unsuspecting student body of the fate in store for them. The open- ing scene was outside an air raid shelter in England, featuring Esther Iohnson and Gene Scheffert. Going across the border into Scotland and Ireland, the group encountered Bob Keoppel, a Scotch laddie, who preferred Post Script to Bum's poetry, talking to a pretty Irish colleen, Patti Malloy, Whisked off to Spain on the wings of drama, students saw a brave toreador, lack Marshall, about to fight for the hand of his beautiful senorita, Thayes Downs, and Post Script. A tenseness fell upon the gathering. Storm troopers marched upon the stage followed by that stalwart figure so well-known in today's eventsel-litler, himself, played by George Hinshaw, Seig Heil!! The little man was in the middle of a most important speech. and very well pleased with himself, when he became maddened by reports of a new book that was being published in U. S. A. and which was surpassing his own Mein Kampf. Breathing a sigh of relief at being safely taken from such a menacing scene, the audience now had only to listen to the sweet Swiss yodels of two Alpine lads, Paul Gravatt and Roger O'Neil. Then a trip to a fox hole in Italy gave a touch of war. Braak, Hinshaw, Everist, and Sunday were our American doughboys. A quick trip through the dark continent showed men in unifomi, Charles Lander and Howard Stegman, swooning at the feet of veiled Egyptian beauties, Sorensen, Livingston, Nance, and Downs. In the deep jungles M. H. S, cannibals, Davis and Roseburrough prepared for a hefty meal of Russell Catron. He won his freedom with a copy oi Post Script. In Persia the three allied leaders met in the same locality where three M. H, S.'ers, Byers, Moll, and Sunday. were stationed. A new version of the Volga Boat Song came from the lips of Russian singing and dancing girlsAMalloy, Nance, Ferguson, and Downs. A stop at a South Sea Island showed the wolfish tacticsof a Navy man, Sunday, when there's a good looking gal, Doug- lass, in a grass skirt present. Back in the good old U, S. A. the first stop made was in California. There a movie star, Betty Gile, was seen discussing the latest movie, Post Script with Rosie the Riveter, at work in an aircraft plant. A little farther east the travelers eavesdropped on a conversation between two men, Price and Skramovsky, of the Wild West talking on the possibilities of the rodeo, Marshalltown itself was the next scene of a bloody battle between the leaders of those two outstanding clubs, G. Y. and Hi-Y. Post Script was the winner and the contestants went off together. After this event Patti Malloy, editor of Post Script, gave a sales talk and ushers collected Post Script subscriptions. The grand iinale was a scene in New York where Fats Gravatt and his Post Script Pin-Ups -Aliverist. Sunday, Hinshaw. Easley. and Braake-presented a very new and very original routine of dancing and taheml singing, The little dears were at- tired in becoming pinafores of pastel colors. They modestly danced across the stage and then retumed to sing coyly several une recognizable songs. With this rousing episode the outstanding masterpiece was brought to an end, but it will do doubt live forever in the hearts of those who were privileged to view it. The chief purpose of the Pep Club is to keep up school spirit at the games. Members wear red and blue jackets and make a colorful appearance, This year Ioan Livingston and Betty Gile acted as copresi- dents. The other officers were Mildred Pell, vice presi- dent: Pat Nance, treasurer: and Mary Grimes, secretary, G.A.A. members work toward winning letters by re- ceiving points for participation in indoor and ou.door sports. They sold candy and sponsored concessions at games to raise money for their club. and also sold tags, the proceeds of which went to buy cigarettes for serv- icemen. Club money is spent to buy equipment for the gym. In the spring they held a Mother and Daughter Banquet at which officers were installed and letters presented. G.A.A. girls also decorated the platform for Homecoming. Frances Nickerson served as president, Barbara Ginter was vice president: Thayes Downs, Dem ole-ge Officers M-, X secretary: and Pat Hoggatt, treasurer. The two main events sponsored by the Demolege members each year are the Colonial Ball held at the Y this year--and the Mother and Daughter Tea. During the football season Hi-Y'ers ran the score board, sold ads for the programs, which they sponsored. and collected material for the pep bonfire. By selling Beat Ames tags they cleared enough money to keep the basketball team supplied with oranges throughout the season. They also sold ads for the basketball pro. grams, arranged lor having them printed and distrib- uted them at the games. A part of the proceeds from the check room was donated to the Red Cross and part to the athletic fund. At the all-school carnival Hi-Y spon- sored a shooting gallery and a booth for golf putting. Members also volunteered to refinish chairs for a few nights each week. Mr. C. A. Norland gave a talk at one meeting during which he expressed his thanks for this generous work. The students were directed by their teacher, Mrs. Frances Bodie. Rummage Rumpus was the story of a har' assed mother who cleaned her attic to find donations for the rummage sale. Little by little, the family claimed its cherished possessions and if Grandma hadn't given the reclaimed goods to the rummage sale by mistake, there would have been no donations. Mrs. Warren, the mother, was played by Dorothy Steward. Others in the cast were: Margery Warren lean Harn Bunny Warren Barbara Ginter Grandma Annette Burnstein Mrs. Crabb Marilyn Wetherbee Mrs. Camercn Iune Bellus Another skit, called The Contest Play, depicted the back-stage worries of a director and the cast of a high school play in a dramatics contest when the leading lady did not arrive on time. Members of the cast WSISZ Miss Barr, the director Shirley Elting leanne Mildred Pell Iohnny David Price Louise Helen Thatcher Roger Donald Skramovsky Dorine Ioan Livingston Professcr Iackson Arthur Steffler Christmas at Casey's, given just before Christmas vacation, showed what happened when Dad brought home a new pair of pants during a flurry of holiday preparation. Having asked all of the femine members of the family to shorten his pants three inches and having been refused by all of them, Dad went to bed feeling disappointed. Later all of the girls repented and one by one shortened the pants. So Dad's Christmas out- fit was still unwearable. The following took part: Mrs. Casey Mary Ellen Wiley lohn Donald Skramovsky Mr. Casey David Price Kathleen Ioan Livingston Mary Helen Thatcher Denny Erwin Landes Two more one acts were presented in the spring. The titles are self-explanatory- lf Men Played Cards as Women Do, and Good Neighbors. ln the former Arthur Steffler, David Price, Erwin Landes, and Donald Skramovsky took part. The 'good neighbors' were Shirley Elting, Barbara Ginter, Mildred Pell, Mary Ellen Wiley, Marilyn Wetherbee, Ioan Livingston, Annette Burnstein, Dorothy Steward, and Iune Bellus. A play based on a Booth Tarkington novel was presented as the second all-school play of the year. The Fighting Littles. And did they fight! Mr. Little with his explosive temper had in mind a candidate for the love of his beautiful daughter, Goody. Norman seemed to be just too, too, perfect until later events proved him to be just the opposite. Goody's choice, Ham Ellers, was nothing but a young hoodlum in Mr. Little's opinion, but Ham finally managed to win the favor of the old man Henriette, Goody's charming room-mate from the Sunny South tried her charm on the entire household, winning Norman's affection to the relief of all concerned. Filmer, the younger brother, was in the clutches of young love and a desire to be 'different.' His little girl friend, Antoinette, almost ruined her life by an episode with young Dicky Harpeddle. Cousin Olita did much to keep peace in the home while Mrs. Little endured severe headaches and such characters as Cuckoo and Screwball, Almatina, Mrs. Harpeddle, and Miss Pologa fthe Egyptian dancerl dashed about, creating turmoil each in her own way. Mrs. Bodie was the director, and the characters were: Almatina Mildred Grossman Antoinette loan Livingston Olita Ioyce Bryant Cuckoo Virginia Whitehill Filmer Conrad Muzzy Screwball Barbara Ginter Ham Ellers Bill Whitehill Henriette Marjorie Moore Mr. Little Arthur Steffler Norman Peel David Price Goody Patti Malloy Dicky Harpeddle Erwin Landes Mrs, Little Sue Cartwright Mrs. Harpeddle Shirley Elting Miss Pologa Mildred Pell - ig I, 'iff 'MM 4, 4. , V' gf , f w ,,., if V 1 W: ,af l . At the beginning of the year this group played for an assembly at the Iunior High School. The members made their first formal appearance at the Christmas Concert, given in the auditorium in December. They furnished music for the American Legion oratorical con- test. The orchestra, as well as the band, took part in the spring music festival. The high- light of the evening was Grieg's Piano Concerto played by Dorothy Gard, with orchestra ac- companiment. Though they played several numbers at the contest, the orchestra met with no competition this year. Their performance received a first rating. Frank Hill, the instru- mental judge at the contest, said that this or- ganization Was one of the better orchestras of its kind in the state. The orchestra also fur- nished music for the graduation exercises. The Bobcats scored a total of 664 points for an average of 36.9 points per game while they held their opponents to 468 points for an average of 26 points, In only two games did the well- balanced quintet score less than 30 points in a game. In the race for Central Iowa Conference Champs they were way out in front with only one defeat. The cagers were a very aggressive team which never gave up, many times pulling ahead to win when they were ten or more points behind. Van Meter and Hogeland, two regular forwards and honorary co-captains will be lost through graduation leaving vacancies hard to fill. Also lost through graduation will be Gravatt and Paul. while the service will claim Lemmon. In the words of Coach Cook, They were all good dependable players with no one man as a star.
