Other branches of science studied are physiology and mathematics. Open to all students, biology deals with animals, plants. and insects. lt is the most pcpulai science course in the curriculum Physiology. a study of the human body, is offered as a semester course. Phyllis, a life-size dummy, permits study of the orqans of the body in their exact places and in proportion to the rest of the human anatomy. Chemistry and physics are two of the more difficult sub- jects in the hiqh school curriculum, Peculiar odors fre- quently emanate from the chemistry lab, which is part of the course available to luniors and seniors. Physics may be taken by seniors only. Two of the places members of this class visited durinq the year were the qas plant and the Waterworks. As the biggest of their undertakings, the Homecoming rites were successfully handled by the Senate. Queen Marilyn Van Gorp and her attendants, Helen Lanphere and Elsie Mae Marshall, were duly elected by the student body from five nominees chosen by the football squad. Homecoming events included a student talent assembly in the morning, a pep rally the evening before, a football tussle with Oskaloosa which the locals won, 6-O, and a dance at the Memorial Coliseum at which Ray Gray played. Student dances were held at the Y. M. C, A. almost every Friday evening this year, due to the work of the Student Dance committee in cooperation with the Y officials. Composed of thirty-five members, the Senate included seventeen seniors Iulia Brennan, lames Carlson, Iris Cordt, Iack Evans, Thomas Gilson, Charles Hager, Orland Harris, Ernest Iohnson, Louise Iohnston, Betty Kinnaird, Helen Klahn, Doyle Laird, Helen Lanphere, Elsie Mae Marshall, Colleen Melton, Allan Packer, Max Paul, Robert Perisho, Don Shaw, and Marilyn Van Gorp. Iuniors were represented in the governing body by Helen Louise Church, Dorothy Dickinson, lean Gould, Wendell Haupert, Marian Launder, lanice Pedersen, Ianet Rude, Iames Sandvig, Pauline Steen, and Iohn Toborg. Seven sophomores and one freshman completed the personnel. The sophomores were Patricia Berg, Ralph Everist, Carol Hicks, Esther Iohnson, Frances Nickerson, Carolyn Sheets, and loan Whitehill. Basketball was played during the winter months with eight teams competing in what was termed the Big Eight intramural league, Illinois won the league with seven victories and no defeats. Another basketball setup with divisions for both boys and girls was the MCAA league. In the boys' division a three-way tie for first place resulted. The St. Paul, Methodist, and Congo teams all held a share in the title. One of the three Methodist teams, the Blues, won the girls' section of the MCAA league. Marshalltown Senior High School had the honor ot hav- ing an All-American athlete, He was David Brockway, state AAU champion diver, who was named to the All' American swimming team. He and Ioan Davis reigned as king and queen at a swimming festival the previous summer. Iunior and senior boys have a similar organization, Hi-Y. Three oi the biggest social events of the year are sponsored by these two clubs, They are the GY Christmas and spring formals and the Hi-Y dinner dance. This year the main attractions ol the Christmas formal were the mistletoe and Conga line. Star- dust was the theme of the girls' spring formal, which scored a big success. At the Hi-Y dinner dance a fountain of running water and decorations of spring flowers bright' ened the dance floor. Oificers of GY were Louise lohnston, president, Beverly Taylor, vice-president: Elsie Mae Marshall. secretary: and Pauline Steen. treasurer. Hi-Y officers were Charles Hager, president: Orland Harris, vice-president: and Robert Christiansen, secretary-treasurer. Social events are not the most important parts of these clubs, however. In connection with GY many of the girls studied first aid under the direction of Miss Marjorie Elliott. YWCA secretary. Once a month Hi-Y and GY held joint meetings, which were popular with both groups. The featured speaker at one of these meetings was Miss Iessie Parker, state super intendent of public instruction. For their project Hi-Y rebuilt the scoreboard at Franklin Field and installed electric wiring so the scoreboard could be seen easily by spectators in the stands. During the basketball season Hi-Y boys had charge of the check room at the Memorial Coliseum. They also sponsored the bonfire at Homecoming. This spring GY and the ninth and tenth grade GRs gave a tea for their mothers on Mother's Day. Girls from all three groups participated in the program, which included vocal, instrumental, and speaking groups. -X i -K' W GY Officers Confer GR and GY Gather for Ioint Meeting Dom the Conga Harris. The feature attraction on their social calendar was the joint Christmas party. Occurring annually for the Demolege members is the Colonial Ball. At this ball the girls are taught the minuet. and the remainder of the evening is spent in dancing. At the close of the year this organization sponsored the ans nual lVlother-Daughter Tea held at the Elmwood Country Club. This past year Elsie lVlae Marshall served as presi- dent with Harriett Hunnicutt as vice-president: Oma Iean Winslow, secretary: and lris Cordt, treasurer. Decorating Franklin Yield lor Homecoming was one ol the many things the members of GAA did this year. A scavenger hunt and the initiation party headed their social activities, Each girl earning the required number Ol points by participating in athletics received a letter at the end ot the school year. The organization was headed by Ianet Rude, presiclentg Velma Rhode, vice-president: Beverly Taylor, secretary: Betty Wilson, treasurer: and Colleen Melton, historian. ,sine GAA Leaders Watch the Birdie -.-5 X he J inn Burke Digs in for Popcorn Ball i Demoleqe Officers Meet Wykle, Brennans, Rhode Dance Minuet VY' 5, ' '.Y', Q QU.
