Pupils Take First Compulsory Exams High Iowa ,wwf J g 1- - Z Valedictori '57 Wifi Civics Pupils Try Voting Akery, Benson Survey Map of United States an Plus Report Students Ponder over Genealogy Charts SUIIIAL SCIENCE ATTRACTS REEURD ENROLLMENT Next to English, a subject required of all, social science commands the largest enroll- ment. More than 600 students enroll every year in the 20 sections, equally divided be- tween those pursuing American and European history and the 10 semester groups studying sociology, civics, or economics. Compulsory examinations became the major change in the 1941 educational program. It has been over a quarter of a century since final examinations had been required of MHS pupils. In order to put our pupils on a footing equal with other high school graduates the change was made. Emerging from the shadows of this year's activity, the study of ancestory has drawn many followers. Each American history pupil is given the opportunity to fill in a 6-generation genealogy chart. This data is sent to Wash- ington, D. C., to the DAR archives to be re- corded permanently. Another sidelight is learning the technique of voting, special instruction being given for vot- ing by machine. European history pupils view with uncertainty the changing continental boundaries while the economics classes wrestle with the problems of finance. Although Virginia Wheat finally won the Shirley four-year scholarship award, Catharine Collins led the class until the final percentage was figured. Relating pictorially the record of the 1940-41 school year, this section is devoted to the academic as well as the non-academic courses. Both constitute the routine of the pupil who aspires to attain a diploma. Classwork is the backbone of any school. That is why class- room scenes form an integral part of this volume.
