This season's instrumental activities were directed by Charles L. Bezdeny. National contest judges awarded second place to the Marching Band and Superior Plus to Patton Apgar, baton twirling drum major, in the regional meet at St. Paul May 18. Mary Ruth Wester won top state honors with her viola solo. Other state winners were Maxine Bowman, alto clarinet, Edward Sulli- van, bass clarinet, and Betty Io Sheeley, 'cello. All won Excellent comments. The string trio also placed second in state competition. Big events in the Marching Band schedule were the Drake Homecoming Queen parade and the Pella Tulip Festival, the latter yielding a S50 first prize. Sharing honors with the Orchestra, vocal music under the direction of Miss Gwendolyn McCague made its formal debut in the Christ- mas pageant. Both a college and a high school operetta completed their program. Small groups and soloists including the girls' trio, girls' sextet, Mezzo-soprano Clarice Ludlow, and Soprano Betty Io Sheeley entered the state contest.
