Our actor, scientist, musician, bon sayant member of the faculty is Edward D. Knock, high school physics teacher and junior college chemistry instructor. So engrossed in their physics problems are these seniors, that they don't seem to be conscious of the fact that their picture is being taken, or are they just Hpretendin' ? Browsing Through the Headlines For the first time the Marshalltown junior College offered biology and American his- tory in its curriculum and entered the Drake-Kendall Theater Tournament at Des Moines, winning first place in the state with the one-act play Poor Aubrey . I. C. also sponsored a carnival in November to pro- cure funds for social events of the year. The first high school in the state to offer girls' electricity, Senior High School made it a semester subject, the only addition to its curriculum this year. In dramatics once again the best actor in the state was an M. H. S. junior recognized for his characterization in the one-act play, Undcrcurrent . The 1934 Pebbles yearbook was awarded All-American rank by the National Scho- lastic Press Association. Pebbles became a weekly paper again because of the pick-up in ad sales. Reentering the Columbia Scho- lastic Press Association, the newspaper was awarded an excellent rating in that contest as well as by the N. S. P. A. for the sixth time. Pebbles was named first in a list of nine Iowa high school newspapers given a superior rating by the Iowa High School Press Association. A special issue com- memorating the Tercentenary Celebration of the founding of the secondary schools in America was published in February. Six journalism pupils compiled a history of the Marshalltown school system which was en- tered in national competition. M. H. S. marching band was given an excellent rating at the Iowa City Music Festival, having reentered competition after several years' interval. Three thousand tickets were sold for a band exhibition in May sponsored by a committee of local citi- zens to earn money to go to the Iowa City fete. ln sports competition this year the foot- ball team placed third and the basketball team second in the Central Iowa Confer- ence.
