We have people with many different interests and abilities. An important factor which promotes this diversity is that M-U draws its students from all over the city. In fact, the city itself is probably the pnly thing everyone has in common. Bringing people with a variety of backgrounds together, gives the school a heterogeneous student body. Because of this, students can learn not only from books, but from each 5 ■■■I UBII mu PRINCIPALS 8 Who developed a quick and more efficient way to inform students about registration? Who treated Homecoming candidates to lunch (at Arthur’s)? Who developed a great rapport with junior high students? Why, the principals, of course! These three men incorporated new methods of administering M-U, but did not neglect the feelings of students. Our principals regarded staff and students individually and kept our school atmosphere unique. THIS PAGE: CLOCKWISE: Keith Olsen. Assistant Principal 6-9; Michael Joseph. Principal: Michael Blodgett. School Community Social Worker; Pat Davis. Social Worker. The major goal of the counselors, social worker, and the school-community social workers was to keep the students well informed. They made special efforts to keep students aware of available opportunities to enrich their educational experiences. Seniors looked to their counselor for help in deciding their future. Debates about taking class credit no credit versus letter grades, proceded in tiny, cubicle offices. Students came to the social workers to discuss problems ranging from siblings to drugs to friends. School-community counselors, kept bussing to and from M-U under control, aside from monitoring the halls. STUDENT SERVICES 10 THIS PAGE: CLOCKWISE: Grace Johnson. Library: Naomi Levitte. Tch. The library instilled special regulations to maintain a studious atmosphere. We welcomed a new nurse who worked part-time. Teachers aides were proven to be invaluable sources of patience and hard work. The office staff accomplishes their work efficiently because they are well organized. The staff is divided into these categories: Dr. Joseph’s personal secretary, counselors' and social worker’s secretary, office aides and attendance-finance-programs-records clerks. Besides completing all their daily tasks, this amazing group handles many staff and student inquiries with much patience. THIS PAGE: CLOCKWISE Marge Hofstede. Admin Aide. As one janitor said, I don’t approve of the mess our students make, but I do appreciate the opportunity to be with kids. The food preparers produced 79,120 meals this year for our staff and students. The fundamentals, previously developed, were now effectively put to use. Open School teachers have perceived a level of equality and honesty between students and teachers which they feel is unique to their program. Students worked industriously on their self-developed projects, which ranged from U.S. energy policies to mountain climbing to wig-making. The Special Ed. Department is unique because handicapped students are allowed to participate in a traditional high-school but also receive special attention while adapting to the regular atmosphere. - 15 This department provides opportunities for students interested in a business career. Courses are offered which give students exposure to many areas of business. Students can learn accounting, typing, shorthand and record-keeping. Students also take advantage of the work program, which lets students who take an occupational relations course work in the afternoon and receive high school credit. Gym classes included activities like racqueball. volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, badminton, and more. For a change of pace, students attempted an obstacle course that included: frisbee-throwing, sit-ups. shooting baskets and more. PHY. ED. and BUSINESS SCIENCE Science courses at M-U are both frustrating and rewarding. Student remarks about their science classes echo through the halls .... Are you going to watch the stars with Mr. Glock tonight? What's photosynthesis? Have you fin- ished packet 9? Where's the Bunsen Burner? Would Einstein say the difference between a node and an anti-node was all relative? M-U Science Department believes that rewards come after questions like these have been an- swered. Each of us has a different temperament and style. M-U students have a lot of choice considering we are a small department! Joan Yesner M-U English Department Chairperson MATH The M-U Math Department caters to the needs of all M-U students. This is seen in the variety of courses offered. They range from: General Math to Geometry to Math Analysis to Probability and Statistics. M-U Math teachers are hard-workers as they strive to bring mathematical knowledge to their students. And if you followed that last proof or derivation, they succeed! 19 The M-U Social Studies department offers a varied cur- riculum. It allows students to learn the basics and find out more about specific areas. Examples of the course sub- jects are: Latin American Studies. American History. Soci- ology. World History. American Cities and American Wars. M-U students also have the opportunity to learn about the US Judicial system by taking Youth in Pursuit of Justice at the Government Center. M-U lan- guage teachers provide classes for each of these levels and for those of you who are somewhere in-between. Starting with exposure to letters and numbers in Span- ish and French, progress can even lead to reading philosophical novels in your language choice. M-U Music and Art Departments have very few person- nel. Vet. they offer many varied courses such as: sculp- ture. photography, choir, jewelry, band and more. THIS PAGE CLOCKWISE: George Traficante. FOREIGN LANG, and FINE ARTS 21 The emphasis is on individual projects this year in the M-U Industrial Arts and Home Ec. departments. In woodworking and sewing classes students acquire basic skills and may make anything they wish at their own expense for lumber or material! Printing and graphics classes are responsible for printing progress reports and other informative flyers sent to M-U parents. Foods classes at M-U analyze students' diets and nutritional requirements. They have also been known to tantalize M-U halls with the smell of bread and cinnamon rolls! Plastics Technology at M-U is a program which is unique in the city and has many technological possibilities. IND. Let's take a look at the festive week.... Early Monday morning, classmates work hard to collect money from one-another for the hall decorations. Much bargaining is heard as students wonder whether their donation is worth skipping their daily bakery goodie. Sophomores contend that more teachers donate to their fund than any other class. Although candidates for the royal-positions were announced last week. M-U students are still guessing who they think will become the king and queen. Voting takes place on Wednesday morning. Wednesday afternoon, many students already know who won the princess-title. Rolls and juice are served Thursday morning at the annual Homecoming breakfast. Nervous candidates, who have no appetite, busily prepare themselves for coronation, which takes place first hour. Queen Anita and King Frankie are crowned and students evaluate their previous guesses. Purchases have been made and the M-U halls become adorned with crepe-paper, balloons and signs with slogans, until janitors insist it’s time to go home Thursday night. Friday includes a rowdy talent show and a victorious football game over Blake. The week comes to a close with disco-dancing at the Homecoming Dance.
