Actually, though somewhat frustrating, the job of the busy administration staff is also often rewarding. Marshall-U had its second Assistant Principal in two years. Dr. Michael Blodgett, and he, along with Principal Dr. Michael Joseph and Assistant Principal Ron Clubb handled the problems of scheduling, crowded conditions, lack of funds and not-always-understanding-but-more-often- so s--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who are those ladies? Which ones? Those over there. Those are the ladies from the office. Yeah? Whatta they do? You mean besides attendence, announcements, mail, teacher management, handling complaints, keeping Dr. Joseph in his place and taking care of the switchboards? Yeah. Well, sometimes they take money, type memos, help the administration and drink coffee to keep going. Wow. And after all that they still have time to do their work? Yeah. Wow. There is more to students than meets the eye. Program changes to human relations, Homework induces social temptations. Many M-U people work dilligently each day to meet the specialized needs of each student. Their jobs are varied, but all deal with students every day, in situations ranging from skinned knees to overdue library books. Despite reduced numbers, they continue to smooth the road to a fulfillment of the student's high school years. 52 Top To Bottom; L To R; Opposite Page; Harry Brown, Mary Ann Rizzato, Kitty Williams, Paul Johnson, Iris Kangas, John Freeman, Barb Rodeberg, Aria Hazley. Along with the rest of the Senior High 5 minute men (or should that say people?) they had their choice of learning: ... However, those who need some assistance to make it through the day know just how indispensable the special education staff really is. We all know that the special education people help out the handicapped students here at M-U. They take care of any special needs these students may have, academic, medical and human. They help these students inside and outside the classroom to overcome their handicaps and get the most out of their education. M-U had a math department and its members did a grand job of teaching. Each member had his her own way of teaching. Some of them analysed wrong answers, taught short cuts and finagaled with numbers. Others gave long explanations of pyramids in Egypt and golden rectangles. In spite of the work, they all had time on weekends for such things as biking, skiing, hiking, gardening, entertaining visiting, singing, reading, and banging away on drums at polka dances. And M-U's inquiring students and M-U's energetic math department all lived happily ever after. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Watch out or that test tube will explode. We will start with Art. The guy behind the beard is Mr. Ronning. He can show you the basic techniques involved in drawing, painting, and sculpture. Mr. Ostezeski can teach you how to take and develop your own photographs or make pottery. (He's the one who's been pulling his hair out lately) Now, on to the Music Department on the third floor. Mr. Doggett is directing the Junior Choir this year in addition to his band, and Ms. Sikora is leading the Senior Choir —- to where, nobody knows. So much for the crash course, the rest is up to you. A senior high open school the first in Minneapolis is housed in room 133. Bean bag chairs, art supplies, tables and students occupy the classroom. This brand new program is run by three teachers, who serve as consultants in the classroom. There are two three hour blocks during the day. Students in the open school receive three credits per quarter, Art, English, and Social Studies. During the three hours each student is required to devote time to his her individual projects. The junior high open school is in it's third year. The open classroom gives the students a chance to learn independently at their own speed. It provides an opportunity for the students to learn how to function without the structure involved in the traditional classroom. open school Remember when gym classes had to be sexually segregated? Well, this year it's different. One no longer has to wonder whether the people on the other side of the divider had to change for gym that day. From now on the big green divider will be open. Males and females get to play around in the same class! Show off your legs, the hair on your chest, relax, let your hair down and enjoy the wonderful view. Now that everyone is excited about gym, it's even funner to be physically fit. Gone forever are the days of pretty little girls in pretty little aprons cooking scrumptious goodies in their Home-Ec classes to bring their strong masculine brothers or male friends! Gone are the days of bachelors (eighth graders) who pale at the thought of having to sew on a button or hem a sleeve! With the invasion of girls into thus-far male only classes such as Industrial Arts, more young men were introduced to the Home Economics (some would like to change the name to Self-Survival) courses with the idea that everyone, regardless of sex, should learn how to burn cocoa and ruin three yards of perfectly good cotton. The idea of co-educational classes such as these was received with wariness on the part of some students, but in the end a well rounded education was had by all who attended. business 62 industrial arts Business classea at M-U hold many opportunities for learning saleable business skills. For right now though, they can also help make your other classes more organized. Typing and shorthand come in handy when doing reports, in school, in college and practically every where else. Banking and accounting help you keep track of those precious dollars and cents, and where you spent them. Whatever your future is, one of the many business classes most probably will help you. Rumor has it that Marshall-U High School was built by Junior High Industrial Arts classes ... This rumor may or may not be true, but it is not beyond belief when you consider the variety of skills taught by the Industrial Arts department. The media varies from wood and metal to plastics and printing, the possibilities range from the practical (wine racks, for instance) to the impractical (like schools) and from the artistic (rhinestone studded wineracks) to the unimaginative (schools). Of course, the most meaningful of earthly objects are those created with ones own effort and hard work, and for these Industrial Arts is the place to go. To the outsider, a Sadie Hawkins Dance may seem a strange or silly idea. After all, what's the point of throwing two hundred kids in various costumes, one slightly deranged Mar- ryin' Sam, several enthusiastic deputies along with an over- zealous sheriff and a square-dance caller in a warm if small gym for four hours? Maybe there isn't a point. But when two hundred kids get together with the intent of having a good time, there is always fun to be had, even if it's only sitting in a corner talking to a friend. 72 Top To Bottom: L To R: Advisors Will Greer, Markie Harwood, Staff members Reed Watson, Libby Gross, Christy Lewis, Betsze Wattenberg, Nora Murphy, Peter Slettehaugh. In the days of appointed executives and unelected rulers, there remains one entity which is still chosen by true democracy: Senior Class Officers! As the only elected body in the school, these four people have additional duties beyond planning class activities. They serve on the Principal's Advisory Committee, and thus provide leadership for the entire school as well. And Mark Maffitt, Class President, says I am not a crook. 78 Footlights, makeup, audiences, whispering, laughter, dancing, and having a good time. Making people laugh and making people cry. To take a story and give it life, to mold it and shape it until it becomes real. Living it; believing it. Keeping it alive forever, in the memories of the viewers. theatre C.S.3. School dances are a lot of work. There are bands and policemen to hire, tickets to design and sell, posters to make and hang, and gyms to decorate. The O.S.A. (Organized Students Activities) did it all several times this year. Why? Because along with being a lot of work, school dan- ces are a lot of fun. And that seemed to make it all worthwhile. Advisor Helen Mose. V To some, registration is thought of as a hassle. To others, it is known as a pain or a drag. Still, it would be more of a hassle and certainly more of a pain if, in this school of such varied interests, we had less of a choice in our classes than we do now. With many differ ent alternatives and so many class offerings, registra- tion is a very necessary event. registration J 81 stage Qpew Oblivous to the crowd below, a single beam of colored light splinters down, down, down and stops at the larger than life curtain which seems to be opening itself. Who or what could be behind such a strange occurence? Nobody knows for sure, but it has been rumored that the stage crew has been responsible for similar deeds. s.v. t.v. that if you want to develop film or dark- room techniques and don't have time during school, you can do it afterwards. Andy O. is there to help, and when all else fails ... Fotomat is right down the street. The teacher wanted something special. He wanted to take his first hour class to Pompeii. But they couldn't charter a bus. His second hour wanted to watch a speech by Richard Nixon before he was elected president. Third hour he wanted to hear HIMSELF lecture. Who did he call for these monumentous tasks? The Audio Visual and Communication Department!!!!!!!!! phctc club 82 open school The setting is a large, carpeted ex-classroom. Students are sprawled across the floor, engrossed in abstract art forms or murder trials, or sitting quietly in corners dis- cussing the plight of the American Indian in modern society. Teachers are busy with students here and there, but not so's you'd notice. This is the Open School, Senior High Style. Way in the dark depths of the basement, the scene is much different, rowdier, louder, the students younger, the teachers more harried-looking, but smiling anyway. This is the Open School too, for Junior High kids. Across the way, through wonderful dinkytown, over the bridge and through the doors of Piek Hall, teachers and students are concertrated on learning. Some things just don't come as easy to some kids. This is where they get help and attention. We are the people of the cities, of the side- walks and dark buildings, the people of the spirit. Through our songs and through our dances, through our speech and writings, we struggle for understanding. Our generation may be one of binding brother to brother, drawing sister to sister in proudness of where we have come from and hope for where we may go. Our generation may be one of freedom for all, freedom at last. 85 — Listen close now, someday you might need this information for an exam. What takes at least a week to plan, five hours to set up, two hours to complete and fourty minutes to take apart, uses lots of energy crepe paper, balloons, construction paper, creativity, and excess calories, raises money for the senior class and is very entertaining? If you answered A Friday- the-thirteenth-Valentines-Day-Dance you were not only right, but may consider yourself well informed. The dance was attended by over 113 sweethearts of one kind or another who listened to records DJ'd by David Barnhill and gradute Bill Halverson. Despite a few un-begun romances, 'most everyone had fun! valentine dance 86 r ■ FY . Because of decreased enrollment at Marshall-U, and an increase in the number of high school students found in the Dinkytown area, the rumor that the school was to be moved from its present location to the dining area at Burger King, was almost believable. There is reason for confusion, since Dinkytown is so much a part of the school. And some never seem to find their way out of the maze of food and fun. 89 r cheerleaders poms POMS: L To R: Front Row: Anne Backstrom, Tami Hess, Carol Dahlberg, Back Row: Laura Cross, Wendy Jacobs, Kathy Murphy, Joy Bostrom, Rita Schardin.
