Was he really mad when my yo-yo went through his window? Our talented office staff answers these and many other questions every day of the school year. S4 Why do you take a foreign language? It brings on new horizons. It is a rewarding experience. To keep my mother happy. Let the mind reach what the pocketbook can't. I like to express myself in different ways, and knowing another language makes that possible. S6 One place where you can find Hitchcock and Shakespeare? read stories that were written by famous authors and by your best friends? speak before a class — or even a T.V. audience? YES!!! Due to a continued elective system, through a method of course rotation, students are offered over 30 different English courses during their high school years. (A far cry from the two R's!) With this and the addition of a new resource center, the English Department has continued to be one of the many exciting and dynamic departments in our school. How are we culturally different from Latin America or the near and Middle East? How are our cultures alike? These and many other facts of the world are being explored by M-U students. In the past, students used to study just history and geography. Rarely did they have opportunities to take courses in political science, anthropology, sociology or psychology. Now the Social Studies department offers these disiplines in an effort to help the student to better understand the past, and how it pertains to the world today. OPPOSITE PAGE: CLOCKWISE: Inez Todd. Have you ever seen an oscillator, a sugar cube burn, or the inside of a frog? If you haven't, drop in on one of Marshall-U's exciting science classes. These classes are taught by our dedicated troop of science teachers, who work their hearts out trying to keep us kiddies enthralled and interested while earning credits. This can come to a fantastic amount of work, but the Science Department handles it smoothly and with class. 60 science M-U's math teachers work hard all year to make sure that the students get full attention, a lot of help, a few sleepless nights, a few headaches, but most of all they want you to get a good math background. This year they have offered such classes as Calculus, Food and Math, Machine Math, and assorted others. It's really a job handling a bunch of kids all day who can't tell the difference between a triangle and a square, and remain sane. But all the math teachers do a fine job of keeping their sanity. Have you ever walked into a class and found the teacher and all of the students high? Maybe you should pay a visit to room 322 during Concert Choir. There is plenty of stuff to go around, and everybody is welcome. •music Amid countless, Nerve-scraping Tones, Silence falls. A chair squeaks Restlessly. Suspense drips from The conductor's Baton. Musicmakers and Hopeful parents Wait impatiently Till fifty hearts Are opened with The first chord. Let me take you down the hall of M-U's art complex. Busy you say? What else could it be with all the classes offered? Drawing and painting, sculpture, jewelry making, stitchery, almost any aspect of art you could ever want to venture into is being taught by our three art teachers. No wonder it's busy! fine arts 62 open school 0.1.0, What should seventh and eighth graders take at M-U if they need a little confidence in themselves and their capabilities? Obviously a class where teachers can give more individual help, a class that will help students in other classes present and future, and above all, a class where the teachers can give the encouragement that is not found as much in regular classroom situations. Alternative Learning Environment has offered all this for three years, where the students are taught things like English, math, woodworking, and most importantly, a new attitude towards life itself. Mornings in AWARE are usually spent in group sessions discussing almost any topic in existence. Afternoons are spent individually working on the students major project for the quarter where the only requirement is that it is interesting to the student. Students learn and participate in activities like camping, cooking, canoeing, biking, and much more. Truly there is nothing that can't be done in AWARE! Believe it or not, the Open School is still here with some new faculty, and even some sixth graders! New faculty members include Launa Ellison, and Mary Hepokowski who works with Anne DeMuth to teach and to learn in the open alternative. Every year, the Open School gets bigger and better with good intentions for everyone! It gives you training in lifetime sports which is very important in this age of sitting behind desks and pushing buttons. It teaches good sportsmanship, relieves tension and creates a different type of atmosphere for people to get acquainted in. It provides a break from the well known academic pressures on other classes. The Phy Ed teacher is a very special person, who can really relate to a kids feelings and problems. They also help us learn how to work together and to realize that we all need someone else at one time or another. 64 The special education department at Marshall-U is divided up into two main sections consisting of the orthopedically handicapped and the Concentrated Learning Center. The orthopedically handicapped students attend regular classes with the acception of adaptive physical education, typing, foods, and industrial arts. Students are encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible but when problems arise, the staff from room 315 is there to help them up and over the obstacles. Room 315 is a resource center, however you may also find a game of chess or other strategy games in progress. Concentrated Learning Center is designed to provide a more effective learning environment for students with special needs, and to develop a team effort toward increasing the positive learning experiences of the student. Both sections of this department are staffed by volunteers, teacher aides, student teachers, resource teachers, LPN's, and a special needs co-ordinator, all working to integrate the students into the regular classes and school activities according to their wants and needs. If so, you've probably taken one of the many Business, Industrial Arts or Home economics courses offered at M-U. These classes teach students skills they'll need as they make their ways into the world. (Look out world!) A) The Easter Bunny B) Julie Andrews C) Benedict Arnold D) The brave and gallant people of the lunchroom! E) Donald Duck ANSWERS: I. D is a pretty good guess, but you're wrong. C is the correct answer. II. The Easter Bunny only comes once a year, so the right answer is D . So we say THANKS to the staff for helping make M-U a better and cleaner place to be. 69 ACTIVITIES Who's gonna be the Homecoming candidates? What time is Coronation? Did you see the Talent Show? Who took my Homecoming button? How are you getting to Parade Stadium? Are you going to the dance? These are some of the questions which echoed through the halls prior to M-U's 1974 Homecoming. Posters, slogans, crepe paper and other paraphenilia, looking very impressive, were hung a zealous week before hand. There was suspence of wondering who the King and Queen, Prince and Princess would be. Although we didn't win the football game, a fairly good-sized crowd turned out for the dance. The enthusiasm of this year's Homecoming matched that of last year, and all in all was quite a success. 72 TOP TO BOTTOM: L TO R: OPPOSITE PACE: Princess Lori Hoisington and Prince Mitchell Bliss, Candidates Colleen McCann, Jack Rainey, Kay Doetkett, Rick Morrow. Sadie Hawkins was a big hit this year, com- plete with a square dance and a real, honest-to-goodness caller. For those who had finally asked the man of their dreams, there was a Marrying Sam where your most secret wishes could come true with only your signature and a dime- store ring. For those who had ended up asking the man of their dreams' twelve- year-old brother, there was a jail where, for a slight fee, you could rid yourself of your date and set about finding a new one. For several, it proved to be a very successful! eve- ning. 76 77 This years Student Senate had a fresh start. A new advisor, meetings held after school, with one representative per guide group led to the writing of a new con- stition. The Junior High students were given representation when elections were held in November. Officers were: Chair- person Krishna Seeley, Vice-Chairperson Kim Kyle, Secretary Katie MacEachern, and Treasurer Ralph Weinberger. This new style ignited a spark of curiosity in some, and meetings were fearlessly and faithfully attended by many concerned students. Because my partner and I feel that the present system is unsatisfactory (or unfair, undemocratic, etc.) we stand firmly resolved: that the United States should signifigantly change the method of selecting Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates. Sound boring? Well it is—unless you are verbally fighting it out with 3-7 other 2 man teams from across the district (one at a time) of course. Exciting? Agonizing? Stimulating? Hard work? Suspensful? Thrilling? Debate is all of this and more. Don't believe it? With the transfer of the job of Kaliedoscope faculty advisor from last year's Peter Bast to this year's Joan Yesner, the Kaliedoscope managed to continue turning out a top notch product. This year's staff was much bigger than last year's, but they showed responsibility and promise a the wheel of the only uncensored paper in the Minneapolis schools. The student activity fee, which formerly paid for part of the paper, was abolished last year, so it was announced that those people who wanted the paper had to pay two dollars for a year's subscription. Subscribers, unfortunately, proved all too rare and the paper had to reduce its publication frequency substantially. In the end, however, SEA agreed to furnish funds for further editions. Over all, the staff faced all hardships well to produce on of the city's leading schol newspapers. 80 collage Ordered to write the copy for the College Staff page, we flip through the pages of yearbooks past for inspiration. Finding none we stop to ponder our situation. What exactly can one say about our staff, besides the fact that it was made up of typing class drop-outs and graduates from Mrs. Finch's School for Delinquent Boys? What can one say that doesn't sound typical or corny or senile about the bond that grows between yearbook staff members when they view the book and say with pride, This is our creation (remini- scent, perhaps of Frankenstein and his monster)? Well why should we say anything at all? Nobody reads yearbook copy anyway! 81 L TO R: FRONT ROW: |ill Westerbcrg. As well as the concerts, the band helped to provide entertainment for the enthusiastic fans and team members at sports events throughout the year. Choir is a special kind of class; people don't just go to it — they belong to it. This year the choir engaged in sev- eral social activities, including a sleigh ride, and some post-concert victory parties. These, believe it or not, help to unify the total sound and make the many long re- hearsals easier to cope with. The experiences gained from being in choir often help form futures, and always leave happy memories. The Junior High students had an alternative which they could select in place of the usual enclosed classes of math and science. This program is called Adjusting Learning Environment (ALE). It furnishes new approaches to the required material and provides opportunities for pursuing different subjects such as woodworking and photography. Utilizing this alternative proved to be a valuable experience for the students who participated in it. Biking, skiing, hiking, canoeing —that's part of AWARE. One of the requirements is to complete a major project; meteorology, bird-watching, cooking, the list is seemingly endless. AWARE offers M-U students a chance to learn things outside of the classroom. OCLE is offered as an alternative to the old classroom routine. The students are really enthu- siastic about studying Latin, composing music, working with children's theater, and other things they've become involved in. OCLE provides a valuable experience for the years after high school. 84 open school urban arts Dance, photography, theater arts workshop. Sound interesting? YES! You could learn contemporary dance and ballet, and work in an experimental dance workshop. It's a great way to get a gym credit. Or get in the scene with pictures. Maybe earlobes turn you on. Think of all the earlobes you could uncover through the world of film. But, if you can not picture yourself with a camera, you might try the theater arts workshop. Why don't you try being a horse or a mirror? For whatever interests you, Urban Arts has something for everyone. When life gives you tomatoes, make bloody Marys! announces a sign on the open school door. Actually the main business of the open school is not making alcoholic beverages but teaching a set curriculum to 70students, when they want to learn. Most of the learning takes place in the basement headquar- ters. Students also move outside the nucleas to take such classes as music, home economics and algebra. On the whole, it's a pretty cool alternative to an old fashioned Junior High. 85 The MUHS Communication Center offers students and faculty it's television services in a variety of ways. In conjuction with the Audio-Visual department, the studio managers and others associated with the Communication Center provide video tapes either taped directly off of public network, produced in one of our television studios, or taped outside M- U on location. The students involved in the radio seminar are required to create both taped or live shows which are aired over the cable on channel 13 of the MUHS television network. These shows can be any genre, from rock concerts to soap operas to documentaries. The stage crew, working in unison with the Communication Center, help set up the auditoriums and sports events. Their combined services provide experiences, both educational and entertaining. 87 senior class officers This year's gallant Senior Officers were: President Lynn Ahlgren, Vice President Jim Boler, Secretary Kirsten Gorham, Treasurer Jack Rainey. These officers had a difficult and challeng- ing job ahead of them: giving the class of 75 memories apart from their underclassmen adventures. They organized committees to arrange such activities as the Junior-Senior Prom, the Student- Faculty Basketball game, the Junior- Senior Sleigh Ride, and the Senior Banquet. Planning and carrying out these things instilled a real dedication in these groups of Seniors, and the resulting Senior activities were a real success. 88 theatre CAST: BELOW. This happened many a time as Debbie Nelson directed and produced the one act comedy, The Stingy Mr. Penny Pincher The cast spent their Saturday mornings not watch- ing cartoons, but painting sets and rummaging through dusty attics trying to find a costume that would fit their part. Back stage, everyone was in a panic; the lead thinks he's getting Strep Throat, and the supporting actress thinks she's coming down with a rare disease from India. On stage doesn't seem so bad at all. Then, some- one forgets their line, or the audience laughs at something that wasn't funny, or you walk left instead of right, and you hear your little brothers and sisters yelling Hi! from the back row. But when the show is over, and success fills the air, it all seems worth while. 89 What's O.S.A? A lot of people have been asking that lately. It stands for Org- anized Student Activities, but it's a lot more than that. It's a group of con- cerned students getting to- gether to plan social events throughout the school year and help with dances, dinners, and programs planned by the other establishments in the school. And you know what? They have a good time doing it. 90 During the year there comes three days in every senior high student's life where they rush madly around the lunchroom desperately trying to find a schedule that will work, keep their health, sanity, and the pencil they came in with. Registration has never been a bowl of cherries for everyone but we all learn to grin and bear it. 91 This year marked the start of inter-school adapted athletics for Marshall-U's handicapped students. We are beginning what we hope will become an important part of Marshall-U's athletics, and an integral part of Mpls. Public School's athletic pro- gram. The league is set up to involve other orthopedically handicapped students from area junior and senior high schools in competitive sports. These sports are participated in with enthusiasm. As a matter of fact, a recent poll shows that Dinkytown rates rather high as a free time leisure area. Some reasons conjected were: 1) The fresh air seemed to stim- ulate the productivity of the academ- ically weary mind. 2) The food is well suited for the strange appetites of M-U students. 3) The reading material to be found on telephone poles, in store windows or on the corner of 14th Avenue and 4th Street served as a good supplement for young minds. It seems Dinkytown is one thing everyone at M-U has in common. 94 95 BACK ROW: L TO R: Coach Sheridan laeche, Jim Boler, Brian Corbett, Matt Kangas, Alex Martynenko, Ollic Zaragoza, Mark Sarico, Mike Schellenberg, Lyman Irwin, Jim Ludgate, Jeff Hager, Mark Maffitt, Britt Freeman, Assistant Coach Ed Prohofsky.
