English nl M-U this past year dealt with a whole realm of ideas. The new quarter system made it possible for us to take three different English courses and the elective curriculum enabled us to study intensively in an area of our own interest. We read everything from Geoffrey Chaucer to Will Shakespeare, from Homer to Albcc. We wrote stories, made films and acted in plays. The ideas with which we were bombarded throughout the year, stimulated our own and helped to increase our skills in the art of communication. 20

The social “sciences” department had set itself to a hard task: making the students of Marshall Uni- versity High School more aware of the world outside. With the quarter system and electives giving more variety, social science teachers hoped that students would come to class because they were interested and not just because they weren’t allowed in the halls or because they needed the credit for graduation. With u few new arrivals and lots of new ideas, the department showed itself capable of handling most of the problems that education involves. With fi- nancing from the S.E.A. grant and the minds of teachers who cared and were willing to experiment, the social studies or social science class offered a new experience in learning. 22
