It's really distressing to hear West Virginia referred to as a state of nothing but coal tipples and slag heaps. These things, of course, do exist, but to me they do not detract from the vast natural panorama that displays itself in my home state. Polluted rivers and smog-filled skies are not in-digeneous to South Charleston alone. Why should West Virginia be singled out as a filthy, unclean state. I've seen much worse landscapes in New Jersey. I sometimes think of West Virginians who have left to find financial happiness in the Big City . If my plans go as I hope they will, I'll not be their follower. I'm not interested in the anonymity of the city. The city that can make you rich can run you ragged. The economy or the environment, which should we choose? In one direction lies a distant, hut certain destruction of nature and our resources. The other direction offers a long hard climb to the preservation of our natural beauty. We're going to have to suffer shortages and inconveniences for this preservation, but is that too much to ask for living in a world with green trees and hillsides or clean air and water? Well, there you have it, two choices. I've already made mine. Rjy Rjppold Chicl Photographer 1974-1975 Q We've just come through the pseudo-environmental period, at least that's the way a supposedly learned instructor termed it. There are those who believe that the environmentalists will ruin this country, in fact, they are the only ones who can save it. The ones who cry, We aren't hurting anybody, leave us alone,'' are the ones who daily pollute our air and water or strip our land of its identity. They have to be controlled or there won't be anything left. If the people don't listen to the pseudo-environmentalists , it may be too late to even say, I told you so ... RR I)
