A start a basis a future experience unity It was successful in some ways, but there were disappointment too We should have won against Dayton and Kent State. We should be pretty good next year, but you can never tell we could get worse People will look for us to win four or five games in 72. just because we won two this year. I guess we can 1 won't feel any more pressure next season. The team as a whole might, but the individuals won't 'eel more pressure As far as the coaches go. I think there will be more pressure next year. Like this year, the coaches let us make a few mistake , but not many. I don't think the fan will exert as much pressure a the coaches 11 Head coach, AD comment on Young Herd It was not just a football season, it went deeper than that. Football is just a game. But the things which make it up are what makes it great. IT was all of us playing ... we all had a share in it. This year we had the nucleus of a football team which was forged out of dedication, frustration, pride and disappointment. But nevertheless a team, when we look back on it, that was the foundation of the rebuilding program at Marshall University. As I look back at the season, I’m pleased with some things. I was disappointed that we didn't win three games because I think we should have beaten Kent State. We made mistakes borne out of inexperience, but this is one of the pitfalls we knew we’d have to face. “This team asked no quarter, but was willing to make the supreme sacrifice for the impossible dream .'' Jack Lengyel, head coach When athletic director Joe McMullen speaks of the 1971 Young Thundering Herd's season, he keeps one eye on the future. I think more progress was made than could rightfully be expected. Yet, we trust that it will continue that way. I think next season there will be more pressure to win and higher expectations. Opponents will be less likely to overlook Marshall. We have to see the season ticket sale increase, encourage more students to attend, and fill the stadium. Some will never take advantage of this place Yes. but look at the ones who ignore the upkeep. They put bums in the carpet and scratch the tables with their shoes and are just plain careless . . The center is terrific, but the piped in music they had when it was opened was really bad; the petition did something after all . The snack bar might as well hang it up, the old union’s food was at least decent Well, the cafeteria is super good, but the other is a real flop. Most students want to grab a sandwich or something quick instead of a whole luncheon. First presidential inauguration held Oct. 22 and 23, 1971 Nine presidents and 134 years past it’s founding, MU is finally inaugurating a president. “Better late than never. This is one of the few things we’ve done to show we’re a University in function as well as name ... This may make bigger and better schools realize there is a Marshall University. Over 20,000 invitations were sent, and to some of us students, that’s impressive ... Why have we waited so long to start doing things properly? So far. we’ve only done this half way, how many more important things are going half done? More students should have attended to show Barker we support him.” To President John G. She is a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Social sorority, Fagus, Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, and the women’s music honorary, Delta Omicron. She’s been a MU Cheerleader for four years, serving as captain for 1971 -72 season. 26 I Probably both ... Homecoming: Success or failure? Should Homecoming he continued? “Yes, it's a big part of being in college . Since apathy on campus is so great, each event that encourages student envolvement should be continued ... It’s the only 'dress up’ activity left on campus for non-Greeks Too many students just use it as another chance to get drunk ...” What about the election of a queen and court? “What about it It’s all a farce, the queen isn’t chosen on beauty. I consider it just a Greek show I think we’re old enough to eliminate the popularity contests. So few vote, there is not anywhere near a majority . It adds to spirit and gives healthy competition ... There’s not enough emphasis on the queen, she’s elected one day and everyone forgets the next. May 3 47 Over-time thriller MU clips St.John’s for title, 110-107 The fifth annual Marshall University Memorial Tournament began with shouts of “Bring on the Herd'’ and ended in the chanting of “We’re Number One”. St. John’s of New York was forced to bow to MU in an over time upset, 110-107. Forward Randy Noll was named the tourney’s most valuable player, pouring in 33 points. Four other MU players also scored in double figures. Earlier, Mississippi State left Rhode Island behind for a 86-72 consolation win. The Bulldogs (State) placed five players in double figures, led by a 21-point performance by forward Jeff Watkins. ST. JOHN’S FC. FT RKB. ST. JOHN’S 50 44 13- 107 MARSHALL 17 47 16 110 Herd outshoots Warriors Marquette edges Marshall, 74-72 Marquette University emerged the final victor in the 10th Annual Milwaukee Classic. It nudged the Herd 74-72 only to have it’s head coach, A1 McGuire, direct obscene language at Coach Tacy after victory. Some people seem as though they can’t win with grace. MU beat Wisconsin in the first game of the classic, 85-83 with Marquette handing Georgetown a bad deal, 88-44, to tell who would clash in the finals. Mike D’Antoni, Russell Lee and Randy Noll were named to the alltournament team. Bob Lackey of Marquette was named the most outstanding player. The answers are hope not and no. Why should MU try again. Why should MU give the MAC another chance to humiliate it. And that's exactly what will happen if Marshall reapplies again next year. This year MU was given the boot because Ball State and Northern Illinois suddenly became eligible for conference membership. The conference they were in. Midwest, is folding. It seems these two schools are better suited to grace the hallowed halls of MACdom than Marshall. So let them. But forgive them, for they know not what they do. But then again, if MU was to apply again next year, the MAC might take the black sheep West Virginians” back in. That is, if Slippery Rock, Cleveland State. Samford. Maine. South Dakota. Cal-Riverside. Northern and Southern Michigan and Siwash didn't suddenly become eligible first. Surely any one of these schools would be better suited to represent the MAC'S great white fathers. Probably the most outrageous part of the whole bye bye Marshall' deal was the reasons the Council of Presidents gave for delaying another year. The Council cited a lack of facilities as the primary reason for the delay. Gee. they even acted surprised that MU had made little or nor changes in facilities. For that performance they should get an •’Oscar.” What a flimsy excuse. What an inadequate snow job. They didn't even bother to cover their tracks. You can bet the MAC fathers knew the facility rectification progress report before they ever decided to let MU reapply a year early. So what suddenly changed to whole picture? The MAC fathers looked stage right and found two superior schools waiting in the wings. Some how. Marshall was able to win two football games without the MAC. And just some how. Marshall was able to be ranked 11th in the nation without the MAC. However, the MAC did help the Herd achieve these goals to a degree. It provided one team, BG. to beat in football and thus far has supplied four teams for the Herd to run over in basketball. Meanwhile, athletic Director Joe McMullen was surprised, to say the least, at the rejection notice. 1 was sitting and talking with the Bowling Green coaches when I got the phone call notifying me of the decision, he said. The Bowling Green coaches had been talking about how good it was going to be to have Marshall back in the MAC.” McMullen should have been greatly pleased with the conduct of the fans at the BG-MU game. It was exceptional considering who MU was playing and who that team represented. It would have been nice to hear him commend the crowd over the PA system for a change, instead of deriding it for its poor conduct. However, McMullen wasn’t pleased with the green-shirted seven who showed up at the game with questionable slogans on their shirts. The slogan read “MAC Sucks. And even thought the shirts bore the truth of the matter, the truth often hurts. It must have hurt McMullen, too. For. he offered to escort one of the seven out of the field house. This one just happened to be Chief Justice photographer Lew Harford. When Lew started to go onto the floor to shoot the game for the year book, he encountered McMullen. He told me I couldn't shoot the game from the floor,” Harford said. He said if I came down and tried he would have me ev icted for wearing vulgarity. Vulgarity. Mr. McMullen? Who's to say what is vulgar and what’s not. A perfectly acceptable word to me may be perfectly vulgar to you. So. who's right? To some people, the words “War and .Vietnam are vulgar. To others the words hippie and freak are vulgar. Would you have evicted someone from the premised for wearing any one of those four works on a shirt. Mr. McMullen? The slogan didn't offend the basketball team, however. One member of the squad told green-shirted assistant sports editor Andre Armstrong to Order 15 more of them for the basketball team. But get them with v-necks so we can wear them with ties when we go up to Ohio U. and Miami. Bowling Green coach Pat Haley wasn’t as much offended by the shirts as he was sorry his team played the Herd at an inopportune time. “Marshall was sky high for this game. he said. 'They wanted to show us and the MAC. Haley also spoke of his next game and away match at Notre Dame. “I'll tell you, if the pope ex-communicates Digger Phelps (Notre Dame coach) before we go up there to play, we aren't going. he said. That's what happened to us tonight with Marshall and the MAC thing. he added. He also spoke of the green shirts. When asked by a visiting sports writer what the shirts said, he grinned and replied. “MAC Sucks. And that didn't mean Mac Jones either. Buddy.” Another fine quote was obtained from a fan. Marshall and the MAC are just like Mohammad and the mountain.” he reasoned. Mohammad (Marshall) has gone to the mountain, (the MAC) enough. Now let the mountain come to Mohammad.
