One that is very personal — One that may be quite emotional. It is difficult: it is slow: The new road is filled with many pitfalls. Death has made her impression on us all: She may leave during happy hours soaked with beer, Or in wild moments of blaring rock. Or in the comfort of a humorous book. Yet she has seen fit to keep her presence known. campus Monday: Clopping feet on the walks Tuesday: Rustling feet in the grass Wednesday: Bare feet kick a beer can Thursday: Tennis shoe feet kick a football Friday: Dorm feet to the waiting cars Saturday: Few feet on the Union porch Sunday: Resting feet stay in bed late, before another week begins. Fall: When we go to Fairfield: Kicking dry cracking leaves In a blazer blue. Winter: Skating to class against the Smith-Old Main wind Bearing factory pollution. Spring: Bask in the rays behind the house With anticipation we wait for The water battle. Summer: The lazy humid heat Causes one to glance at Mimosas rather than books Even m cutoffs and bare Burning feet. 9 downtown Businessmen are figures of influence towers of strength of free enterprise getters of federal aid and welfare builders of a solid establishment winners of the race to the top. Businessmen are also eager to spread their octopus arms on all institutions their control over coach selections, student education their grip on entertainment in an artist series their narrow minded, ••patriotic rationalism. 11 October, the month of Marshall too ... A feeling of tenseness connected with Molotov cocktails, the chants of the participants, breaking of windows and the burning of trailers, plus the menacing troopers — gas masks — rifles — soon brought a non bloody confrontation sparing us a Kent State but giving us a mayor's overaction in declaring the incident a riot. Unusual pepper and tear gas hung over southern conservative Marshall like a storm. A balmy evening of a few dozen students' violence, and 2.000 onlookers’ pastime, an evening in the aftermath of drug raids, an evening of rage and bitterness at alleged police excesses might serve to remind Huntington and the entire state that we cannot exclude ourselves from the mishaps of our age. nor can we afford not to deal with them in a sensible, nonreactionary manner. 13 leadership Marshall — the University with holes in it. Every few days a new hole appears and it Is soon filled with an acting hole. Sometimes the holes are filled in — Witness Barker. Sometimes they're filled and the pieces Drop out — forget Bestwick. Sometimes the pieces can't fit in the holes. How long can we endure? Our administration on paper looks like a screen. The water of chain of command runs through it. The air of continuity and completeness passes Upon it with no effect But a whiny wind which lasts a moment. Then there are those in supreme authority In higher education Who pick our priorities and set their own Semi-guided ones. Although the Herd went down to a resounding defeat by Western Michigan, the festive atmosphere continued. Much to her delight and surprise there was no need to grab a basketball at halftime. Black United Students were able to take credit for a real • heavy’' program. It was to sum it up. black at its funky finest'' using the lighter side of blackness to tell about the darker side of blackness. Corre together and create, create. — Angela Dodson 59 elections After two elections . . . two validations . . . two invalidations . . . Student Government lives. A farce ... a fiasco ... a few surprises. The scene opens similar to other elections with ’ Meet the candidates and voting. Incumbent Mike Gant wins with Joe lazear. his running-mate. Then a Parthenon reporter admitted voting eight times and other students admitted the same. A complaint was filed to Student Court to have the election thrown out. Student Court set up another election in which a closer check was kept. David Cook and Mike Prestera were winners of the second election. Then a further appeal was made and the second election was thrown out and the first election winners were declared winners again. In a third meeting the redecision was thrown out for the second time and the second election was revalidated. Now that you are thoroughly confused . . . David Cook and Mike Prestera were declared winners. Joe Drummond, one of the candidates for president wrote a letter to the Parthenon declaring it invalid. The Parthenon lives and rumor has it. David Cook is student body president. leadership seminar The 1971 Leadership Seminar, sponsored by Student Government. was April 30 and May 1 at Hotel Frederick in Huntington This year's seminar, coorc nated by Ken Munkd and headed by Dr. Gary Schwendiman and Dr. Walter L. Koss cf the Department of Psychology, was to help campus leaders uncerstand different approaches that could be used in handling problems of their groups. The 30 students who attended were chosen by various groups on the basis of leadership potential. Instead of discussing campus issues as in past seminars, participants were given nsight into the psychological asoects of leadership and were given training in areas of decision making, interpersonal communications and leadership styles. graduation Marshall had its 134th commencement exercises May 30. 1971. at Memorial Field House. President Dr. John G. Barker conferred 1530 degrees. Of these. 703 were m Teachers College. 232 in Arts and Sciences. 63 in Applied Science. 216 in Business and 316 in Graduate School. Pearl S. Buck received an honorary doctor of letters degree and Frank Cruise Haymond an honorary doctor of laws. Dr. Warren William Brandt, president of Virginia Commonwealth University. Richmond. Virginia, delivered the commencement address. Thomas Wallace was the student speaker. 65 rush Rush — lifeline of the Greek system — took traditional forms in 1970-71 as periods of formal rush occurred. However. IFC and Panhellemc took moves in the direct on ot open rush removing some of the structure and formality. Nevertheless. rush took tne hectic form of smokers. Coke dates, beer parties, candlelight ccrc-monies, conferences in dosed rooms, financial information, tears, confusion and finally the issuing of bids to prospective Greeks. pikes peak Alpha Xi Delta climbed to the top of Pike's Peak, an annual overt for sororities. Other events in the competition were the egg roll, tug of war. bike race, egg toss, water chug and the pig chase. 69 tournaments Greek Invitational Tournament Sigma Fhi Epsilon defeated Zeta Beta Tau 62-56 in the championship game of the Gree Invitational Basketball Tournament. December 13 in Gullickson Hall. Sigma Alpha Epsilon placed third and Pi Kappa Alpha fourth, bight fraternities participated in the tournamenl sponsored by ZBT and coordinated by Bill Bayert. Players named to the alltourney tearr v.ere Brent Pleasant. Kappa Alpha Psi: John Snyder. Tau Kappa Cpsilon: Bill Crouch, Sig Ep; Chuck Chaney and Torn Clark. SAE; and Bill Bayert and Dennis llumrichouser, ZBT. 70 In the final game of the 1971 Lambda Chi Alpha Basketball Tournament. Alpna Xi Delta edged Phi Mu 34 33. Consolation game winner was Sigma Kappa who out-scored Delta Zeta 18-13 Linda Nolan. Alpha Xi Delta, was chosen Miss Lambda Chi Alpha Basketball: Vicki Simpson. Sigma Sigma Sigma, runner-up. Tourney awards went to Delta Zeta. spirit: Gayle Krummrich, Alpha O.ii Omega, foul shooting: Janet McGmness, Phi Mu. Most Valuable Player. The 1971 All-Tournament Team consisted of Harriet Tra7ier. Phi Me; Mary Ann Zervos. Alpha Chi Omega: Drexena Lawson, Sigma Kappa: Ann Talley, Sigma Sigma Sigma: Marci MIcNeel, Delta Zeta. and Ann Morgan. Alpha Xi Delta. AXA Basketball Tournament 71 greek week Mothers Day Sing In the opening event of Greek Week. Kappa Alpha sang their way into their third consecutive first place trophy with Ride cn King Jesus.' Sigma Phi Epsilon placed second in the men's division with the Battle Hymn ol the Republic.” In the women’s division Delta Zeta's In a Shanty in Old Shantytown” won them a first place trophy, while West Hall with On a Wonderful Cay L ke Today was awarded second. This sing ended a 22 year long era of Mothers' Day Sings tor Marshall. Due to the 1971 early semester change, this was the final presentation. Greeks racing down Fot-lh Avenue in chariots was the scene when the Greek Week games began. The Sig Ep chariot rolled :o the finish lire to win :he first place award. Saturday morning various games were played on the ntramural field. Among tnem wore the tug of war. water chug, comedy relay, barrel roll, and the shuttle relay. As t-e Green (Varsity) scrambled their way on the first drive, I asked God if ww could ever get used to seeing strange names behind familiar numoers. Red hag on the slay . . . A new Thundering Herd battling with long-time alums. The crowd rourod with dvlight . . . their team was playing again A fair catch for the Green. My mind wandered from play to p ay. Just how fair had Marshall been treated? So much athletic suffering from d space to death. Time out called . . . Time: Something none can control. A new president watched anxiously from the press box. He views a ' new Herd begin a new era of MU football. A strong alum drive . . . Will Marshall ever reach the point Of strength it had prior to that November day7 Mr. Morehouse's son ran an errand tor me ... a couple of young widows watched tensely from the stands . . . it'll have to get easier. Wait. Another Green interception. The crowd roars A pile-up . incomplete pass ... too many Green mistakes . . . must tighten up the offense more . . . anofer fair catch ... as the quarter ends, the teams grow restless ... so does the crowd. The Green outplayed the White lo a fault But still the mistakes were careless. The whole game continued as such . . . anticipation mingled with shock and delight ... the stadium is filled with memories and good ones at that. Every time you remember them — the things they use to say or do — the hurt is so tremendous, you can hardly stand it. After times like these, one often wonders. ‘Why us? Why our school, our town, our people?' Your mind keeps asking, 'What purpose can this serve, why so much suffering?’ I have yet to find an adequate answer to the continual question. WHY? They were a proud team and staff with loyal supporters. In the football office a sign states. 'Pride and Sacrifice.' They showed that pride and made the sacrifice. Marshal football will continue, just as life must. A new Staff will take their duties, but not their places; a new team will fight for victories, for themselves and lost teammates; more fans will fill the stadium, but not their homes. Marshall University is preparing a new beginning for a terrible end. We have hope. The stadium needs to be filled with crys of cheer, not woe. Every one of those guys loved football. They loved and needed to play. They enjoyed every triumph and learned from every defeat — They were on that field for a purpose and the purpose is sbll there. Johnny Neumann, at the time the nation's leading scorer, came to Huntington with the southern Rebels of the University of Mississippi. From the midwest came the Cyclones of Iowa State University. And from the northeast came the Holy Cross Crusaders of Massachusetts. The Thundering Herd proved themselves by winning their own tournament and by landing four players on the All-Tournament Team. Beer on campus, drugs, vacancies ir the administration, racial tension, the budget — these are just a few of the problems Dr. John G Barker had to face when he arrived at Marshall on March 1. 1971. Alter months of neglect, the Board of Regents announced tho selection of Dr. Barker as the new pres dent of Marshall cn January 12. 1971. Dr. Barker comes to Marshall from Decatur. Add an undetermined amount of tragedy anguish, despair and grief another dash of vacancies - football coaches, athletic director, sports information director, admissions director extract one football team. Add one inept Board of Regents and too much WVU, complete with closed meetings and misplaced priorities; stir in (or up) some racial strife with stabbings, white and black racism. 321 Omit a one-week football coach named Bestwick; add with caution, one athletic director named MAC-Mullen Sprinkle in MAC basketball officials and a few close losses. Now add a state budget crisis; Wend six parts to a hundred. Filter an Impact Program garnished with apathy and poor sound; mix a few election irregularities and court reversals plus a few arrousing Parthenon editorials. Now plop down a manor house for Barker — veranda, julep and all; add a Bottino mystery and administrative obstinacy. And top it off with an assembly line called commencement with an added insurance policy of no gown, no diploma — and you've got the symptoms of crisis at Marshall University In the year of our Lord 1971 . . . “ a a n ™ n si - 3?? 3?3 But some things at Marshall never change and they add the permanence that provides us sanity. Because — there is still the professor with an open door; An administrator wiling to help you along. There is still Wednesday night with your friends and BS sessions in the dorm room next door; there is still enough campus with trees that you can lie unseen with your girl. 32b 326 And yes . . . there are still sunny football afternoons; and long academic discussions on the campus lawn There are still the forces of change and right that will soon give us all that true balance of work and play, toil and relaxation, demonstration and submission. And there is still Marshall despite the crisis — attempting to learn from mistakes, picking up the pieces, solve the puzzle and heading for better times.
