Marshall. Almost within the shadows of the Towers lie the docks of the largest inland shipping port in the East, the affluent residential and downtown areas, the dives of the East end, and the ghettolike area across the tracks. 6 Campus is quiet . . . like the town. At least outwardly quiet. Maybe, inwardly, a dynamic awareness. Within the staid brick walls there is sometimes understanding, sometimes an awareness, sometimes . . . people who want to change the world around them. 9 10 Registration with lines and cancellations. Standing in line for thirty minutes to find a class closed. So you do it again and maybe again and finally get the right class. But at eight o'clock and to the wrong prof. Luckily its only twice a year. A year. Made worthwhile by one good professor. Or worthless by high school teaching techniques. The enjoyment of participating in a good class. The drudgery of keeping up in a bad one. II A year. In Marshall's dorms with new roommates, and new problems. And new dorms with heating and plumbing troubles and that damnable 2:00 a.m. fire alarm. Even in the dorms there is that new-found freedom for freshmen (if you don't forget to sign out). It includes all night gossip sessions and a .place to display your very own liquor bottle collection. 12 13 14 A year. Of Independents out to show that they can be effectively involved in the university community. And many did. And others, wrapped up in themselves, get a vocation from Marshall, but are never educated. A year of attending classes. 15 A year. Of minorities. Blacks struggling to find their place in a society that is struggling to accept them. The black man wanting to be who he is, not what color he is. 16 17 18 Greeks. Another minority. Although they dominate the leadership positions on campus, they’re now learning to follow. Brothers” and Sisters with a common bond yet divided on many issues. A decisive year for the future of the Greek. 19 A year. Of Wednesday nights at the Varsity, the UL , the Derby, the Hole , the Big Green Lounge ... drinking non-intoxicating beer. Some for fun, some for discussions more candid and relaxed than any classroom can promote. Freshmen exposed to alcohol for the first time learn moderation the hard way. But Friday is the big day with TGIF's, parties, dances and a wastebasket beside your bed. A year. Of hell-raising weekends, still . .. quiet for suitcasers and the security of home. 20 A year. Of pressure. And relief. Overdue papers and reading assignments. Vacations and breaks to ease the monotony. One-room trips and giggly parties. The excitement of getting away with something. Don’t get busted. 22 A year. Of mid-terms and finals. Caffeine, nicotine, benzedrine, amphetamine. Added to a physical wreck to keep it going through one more final. Some can't take it. 23 A year. Of turmoil. Who will the coach be next week? Watching or participating in an overcrowded fieldhouse or a broken-down stadium is demanding. But we stuck it out. Finally, promises for much-needed money. The Mid-American Conference. First, surprise. Then awe, confusion, penitence and finally contempt. We ll now go our own way. A void left by varsity athletics. Filled by an expanding intramural program. 24 25 A year. To do your own thing. To individualize ... or is it conform? With the latest fashions. Or original designs. Practical maxis in the winter and minis irv the summer. A de-emphasis of sexual prejudice. It isn't how long your hair is. it's what's under it that counts. 26 A year. Of desire to find peace, love and happiness. Students with attitudes contrary to the accepted views of society. Protests. Marches, posters, lectures. At least aware of the world around them. 27 A year. Ended. And in its plate, another. For each student a multitude of experiences, unique and never repeated. The drama of Marshall, its physical structure and spirit, will remain. Only the characters change. A year. Of life. With universal experiences. Meaningless. Except to those who were a part of them. 28 29 EVENTS 32 Acting upon the premise that students, in the true sorse of the word, are those who onrticipnte in on independent and susta ned search for truth one can hardly roact with surprise when thoir conclusions urge them to actively correct a malignant concept, ideal, or institution. In order to direct attention to their findings and gain support among ‘heir fellow students and society, they rely ucon the spontaneous mass display cf dispcasjro o demonstration affords them. Marshall students are not entirely ignorant of this philosophy. Beginning with the disruction of the President's Convocation and ending with the Notional Studont Strike, student activists on campus were out and together. 35 MARCH ON WASHINGTON. D. C.. Homecoming 1969 50 Tho homecoming game hod a specal moaning in 1969 other than ihe usual gathering of alumni and the current stjdent body. Alter a hard fought, rain soaked gomo, the Herd pu 'ed off a 21-16 win over Bow:ing Green to break a twenty-seven game nor-winning streak that stretched back to 1966. The half-drowned crowd and team created a college mob scene as spectators and players joined togother in mass celebration and joy. For most students, it was the first footbai! game they had ever seen Marshall win. Only seniors who hod endured the past four depressing football seasons had previously been afforded the privilege of watching the Herd win a game. Marshall almost tied the nation’s winless s?reak with Kansas State and Virginia, but we didn t and Coach ToUey and Company plan never to be shat dose again. Malcolm Boyd Dr. Thomas Dooley Jeremy Larner 69 Mother’s Day Sing A traditional 'good time was had by all affair, the annua Mother's Day Sing, proved to be somewhat less enjoyable this year as the capacity audience suffered and fanned in 90+ degrees in Gul-Ichon Hall. Climaxirg weeks of practice for all nineteen participating groups. Phi Mu and Kappa Alpha won top honors singing “Let's Fell in Love and 'The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze. Placing second were Alpha Chi Omcca and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Mary Lojito Josoph and Suta'i G‘ loicie. Bollc Belle of Mental Health The enrurt Belle of Mental Health contest is sponsored by the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau fra-tomlty and raises fends for the Cabcll-Huntirgton Montol Health Association. The 1970 Belle wos Susan G llespie of Twin Towers West and the first runrer up was Mary Louise Joseph of Prichard Hall. 73 Graduation 1970 On May 31. 1970, Marshall University held its one hundred thirty-third Commencement at Memorial Feld House. Fifteen hundred fifty students received the'r degrees from President Rolond Nelson. At the commencement exercises, Miss Leslee Jean McCarty, graduating senior, delivered the students' address. The commencement address was given by Mr. Orin E. Atkins. President of Ashland Oil Company. Mr. Atkins was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws deqree, and Mrs. Memphis T. Garrison was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree for her outstanding work in tho fields of education and civil rights. 74 Dr. Roland H. Nelson, presiding for the second ond last time at Marshall University graduation excretes. declined to issue the traditional president's charge to the 1970 graduates but instead simply ashed. Since cominq to Huntington in July 1963. he has been confronted with a number of major controversies including recognition of the Students for a Democratic Society, end MU's suspension from the Mid-American Conference. President Nelson received his BA dc-qrco from Duke University, Master's in Education from the University of Virginia and his EDD from Harvard University. His resignation became effective July 31, 1970. Prior to coming to Marshall. Dr. Nelson was president of Richmond Professional Institute in Richmond. Marshall University M.A. Columbia University Dean Lillian H. Buskirk resigned this spring following a long illness. Her resignation became of fective on July I. She had se'ved as a Marshall administrate' since 1937. and was appointed dean of women in 1945. Recently her title was changed to associate dean of students, and she counseled both men and women. However, as the year draws to a dose I find that I have a mixture of emotions that I want to express. As I finish this last page of the bock I fee relief, pride, exhaustion, and a touch of sadness. This office has been the center of a great deal of activ ty during the past yeor. and I have many rremo'ies of the hours spent here. I can almost see the s af- mem bers worklrq busily cropping picturos. drawing layouts, and typing copy. Certain'y there have been several dedicated staff members without whom I could never have comploted this bool. I will feel everlostir.g gratitude to the staff for their tireless efforts through the ofton difficult situations encountered this year. We beqan the year tryinq to create a yearbook that reflected the moods and attitudes found at Marshall University durinq 1969-70.
