BOY,S SPRINT TO VICTORY The 1977-78 boys ninth grade track team's highlight was coming in a close second in the invitational meet which included all Madison schools. School records were set by Don Burrel in the hurdles. A con- ference record was set by Tom Basting in the 880 yard run. John Lami set the pole vault record. Coach Pederson comments: This was one of the best teams welve ever had. They placed a strong 2nd in the conference under strong competi- tion. He also added, This team was a great team to work with because each member had an excellent at- titude. Row 1: Dennis Fitch. The eighth grade track team, after being undefeated all season, won the conference championship for the first time. The Conference meet scores were: Marshall 70, Beloit Roosevelt 42172, Edison 41172, Beloit Lincoln 3572, Franklin 1872. A conference record in the mile run was set by Bill Cun- ningham. A school record was set by Mark Helgested in the triple jump. Coach Pederson says, The team worked very hard together all season. GIRLS SWIM TO VICTORY The ninth grade swim team was undefeated in dual meet competi- tion and they also won the City Meet this year. They easily dominated their opponents winning at least eight of the ten events. Amy Gab- ower, Francie Ryan, Gail Reddy, Barb Bortner, Maria McNulty, and Brenda Baker all broke city records. The team's successes were due to balance, depth and a hard working, winning attitude. It was a pleasure working with such a classy group of girls, said Coach Thompson. Compe- tition was a new experience for many of them. Their abilities were varied but each showed much pro- gress as the season progressed. All worked together as a team as a result tied for the conference title with a 3-1 record. second places, thirteen third places. and This team took first place in the City Meet winning twelve first places, two one fourth place honor. Patti Forrestal set a new Jr. High record in the 50 yd. back- Seated on diving board: Robin Kimball, Terri Nash. Coach VanGaIder recorded six individual first places, seven second places, and three third places. Sue Frohmader set a city record in the 100 yard dash with a time of 12.8 seconds. According to Coach VanGaIder, the girls were not only fine in track participants, but were all around good athletes. GIRLS COME IN F IRST The 1978 Marshall ninth grade girls, track team had an outstanding season. They were un- defeated in all their meets, including the city meet. New school records were set in eleven of thirteen events. According to Ms. Niebauer, this team was composed not only of outstanding athletes, but also of good students and school leaders.
