In an interview, Kevin Schindlertold what it was like to be a member of the wrestling team. Being on the team is hard. We usually stretch, run, or wres- tle, depending on how coach feels. Coach Armstrong is a good coach and he explains himself well. He gets mad at times, but it is for the benefit of the team. This year's team is smaller than last year's team, but next year's team will have a lot of experience and strength. When asked if the crowds made a difference, Kevin said, They don't when you are on the mat, but they really do help before you go out. Marshall finished with a three win, Wrestlers roll up after meet. five loss record. 46 WRESTLING 8 IS GREAT This years top eight grade wrestlers were Mark Bateman and Mike Indjer, who were both undefeated for the entire sea- son. Coach Scheunemann says this was one of the finest teams he has ever coached. The score may be misleading but this really was an excellent team; all of the matches were close and the record could have easily been 4-0. The boys all improved over the season and next year they are expected to be a tough team to beat. Row 1: Jim Swenson, Tom Selby, Bryan Aide, Brian Walker, Brent Schmaling, Joe Olin, Mike Murphy. If they continue to improve at the present rate they will be conference champions in both eighth and ninth grades. Coach Rabideau feels the boys are very easy to work with and try very hard. According to Coach Lewis, the ninth grade team has made an excellent effort. They have made great improvements over the sea- son. Approximately twenty-two boys are on the team. More people have joined swim this year than ever before. Each swimmer had a good attitude and cooperated very well. President; Nancy Karzel, Secretary; Wayne Koball, Treasurer. The Council advisor, Mr. Tyriver, felt this year's council met its goals, and that a tradition has been established in that the last several years have seen outstanding accomplishments by each council; Enthusiasm, ex- cellence, and leadership have been characteristic qualities of each group. The goal of the student council this year was to promote school spirit and sup- ,ort, and to involve more students n ,hooi activities. Such projects as he Christmas Door Decora- tion contest, wrapping presents for the Salvation Army, and giving goods to Echo helped fulfill their aims. For the convenience of the students, the Council purchased a movable cart and sponsored a traveling store. Also, the council strongly suggested that school zone signs be provided for Marshall, and they worked for the improvement of the Janesville bus system. A major undertaking that the students initiated and completed was raising over $1000 for Mr. Clark, a teacher at Marshall with expensive medical bills. The council sponsored dances, had student exchanges with Edison and Franklin, provided guides for various functions, and sent students to a Madison Stu- dent Council Conference. Forensics is a very rewarding activity for Marshall students. The team partic- ipated in five tournaments with other Southern Wisconsin junior highs. The students were extremely successful and gained enormous experience in the areas of interpretation of literature and prose speaking. Mrs. lglar feels, The benefits from participating in Forensics can be end- lessly profitable. The music department performed the musical Scrooge this December. The show was very successful and quite different from anything that had been done before at Marshall. Miss Schuette feels the large cast overcame the many problems a show of this scale may involve. She also said it was a very valuable experience for the cast members. Marshall's all school play this year was The Bad Children which was performed this February. It was a comedy takeoff on Hansel and Gretel. the classic folk tale. Mrs. Ran- dall, the director, thinks the large stage crew did an excellent job on the gin- gerbread house and the ten foot tree. This is the first play at Marshall with specially made sets. Mrs. Randall said, I enjoyed working with the cast members and stage crew. F ORENSICS AND PLAYS Row 1: Heather Linnemann. Cyndi Helquist. The main office student aids are a group of girls that have given up a five-day per week study hall to userve and learn in the office. These girls answer the telephone, receive and deliver notes, do sorting, coun- ting, and help the secretaries with various tasks. In the attendance center, girls pick up attendance cards, record tardies and absences, and return cards to teachers. The bulletin board girls do boards on every floor and the cafeteria. They gave up their study hallsjust to work on these boards. They have certain dates when the boards are changed, and they use their own ideas which are approved by Miss Schuette. They also have to repair the boards when they are damaged by the student body. They are a good group of girls that need no reminding to get their work done, said Miss Schuette. 59 AUDIO VISUAL AND ART CLUB PARTICIPANTS The Audio Visual staff is a group of volunteers who giveupfreetimeto handle audio-visual equipment, students deliver and pick up equipment, to and from teachers for classroom use. Field trips were scheduled throughout the year with trips to the Lane-Blackbourn Gallery. A bake sale was held to raise money for the field trip and other operating costs of the club. The club has also sponsored an exceptional art member to go to a summer art studio. The enthusiasm and the great ambition to learn more about art has made the Art Club a success. Row 1: Kim Hamlett. She also was the Redcoat advisor for two and one half years. She spent many years living in Mexico before coming to Janesville. After first semester this year, she and her family moved back to Mexico. In addition to teaching seventh grade Science, Mr. Clark was involved in various boys' football activities. Last year during first semester, Mr. Clark became ill. The Student Council sponsored a fund-raising project to help finance his medical expenses. We hope he will soon return to his position at Marshall. This, The Year of the Child. is best symbolized by the people who have almost as much influence on us as our parents - the teachers. Dedicated to the job of helping shape students into adults, as well as helping them to lay a solid foundation on which to build their lives, makes the teaching career an important one. This year, we honor four people who have served on the staff at Marshall in the true spirit of teaching. For thirty-one years, Mr. Main has been a band instructor and director at Mar- shall. Mr. Main, who is retiring after his career here, says he has enjoyed every school band he has had the pleasure of working with. He hopes the excellence the groups have shown in the past will continue in the years to come. Mrs. Bell has spent twelve years of her teaching career at Marshall. She taught eighth and ninth grade Social Studies. and retired this year, at the end of first semester. She commented that the staff and students she has worked with were extremely nice, and that she has immensely enjoyed work- ing as a teacher at Marshall. 75 :de . . Wheh we firSt entered MarShZII'I lasisieif-k enth graders, we were kids starting a new chapter in our lives. By eighth grade, we had matured in many ways - the differ- ence a year can make is a big one.
