When we were young enough to be susceptible to fairy tales. nearly all of us believed in the glamorous transformation that could be consummated at the touch ol the good tairy's wand. As we grew up we became so realis- tic and so prosaic that we could scarcely admit that these tales ever in- trigued us. Within these walls there has come to pass a spectacular transformation as unique as any performed in lable. Inexperienced. shy a:nd insecure Freshmen have learned that responsibilities are invariably bound to privi- leges. These same Freshmen have gained in poise. experience and gracious- ness until they surprise not only the staff. but themselves as well. The perpetual growth of Freshmen into well rounded Seniors is a wonder of the age. It occurs within these walls . Congratulations on your achievements. Marshallites. DAVID S. But only for a brief moment do they rest, Back again to the task of checking beats, Writ' ing copy, reading proof on galley they must go, The work and toil of this group never ceases . . Continuing this year to produce a publication worthy of praise, the News staff succeeded in making several important changes, most noticeably in editorial page style and new feature columns, The first semester editors, Donna, Merrill, Leah, Denise, Iudy and the twins were so efficient that it seemed that it would be difficult to find editors to follow them. But part of their efficiency was their ability to train their assistants to be- come equally fine leaders for the Spring semester. Howie, Marcia, Sheila, Sheldon, and Barbara took over in Ianuary and produced an equally outstanding publication. Boosting their sales, the News provided the Knickerbocker Quartet for the assembly on December lU and the Stellar Schmidt's, tumbling team, for the Spring Activity Fee assem- bly on April 21. We have tried hard to keep to the plans and the schedules you left us, but sometimes it has been tough going because ot unexpected complications. Some pictures We were not able to schedule or they did not turn out as we planned. So you will find some pages considerably changed, and you will miss some ol the things we hoped to include. You remember our dinner at Stoufter's on lanuary 2Uth when the NEWS and REVIEW editors announced their suc- cessors lor the new semester. amkaf muiew Then it seemed as though We had such a long time ahead ot us, but actually it has been all too short for the many things We had to do. Here students from throughout the city are trans- ported to and from the school by means of a special bus. This semester the two divisions, under the super- vision ot Miss Donahue and Mrs. Potnick, included six lreshies and a graduating senior. Boom lll, home ot the department, is one of the most pleasingly decorated departments in the school. The pale green walls and deep green chairs blend nicely with the green printed drapes in the social room which contains a radio, chairs, couches, and a piano. Marshalls Braille divisions this semester were pro- vided with a new blonde oak radio and phonograph combination by the school board. William lohnson, class ol lune '45, former Braille club president, regained his eyesight after an oper- ation in April ot this year. Bill served Marshall as an MCA. delegate, NEWS assistant editor, and he was a member oi the National Honor Society. During the past two semesters, Mrs. Potnick has enrolled titty-tour and Miss Donahue titty-two Mar- shallites as Braille readers, a position for which they receive service points. By reading textbooks and outside material to the Braille students and writing papers for them, the readers help the students with their homework assignments. -f ' .,,-,,' V 4 . Sept. 12--Marshall vs. TuleyefThe first game of the season was evenly fought, but Marshall managed to win over the team which later went on to win its secs tions title. Tuley's sauad outplayed Marshall during the first half, but Tuley's penalties and a tough Mare shall defense kept the first half scoreless. On their first series of plays in the second half, Tuley scored. After that it was all Marshall as Finley ran twenty- two yards for a touch down. ln the last quarter, the Commandos managed to score two more touch- downs for the final score. Sept. 26-Marshall vs. Kelvyn Park-Marshall opened the l952 League Football season with a l3-2 defeat at the hands of Kelvyn Park at Rockne Stadium. A forty yard run led to the Panthers first touchdown in the second quarter .... The final Panther tally came on a pass interception in the last seconds of the first half. This was followed by the conversion to make the score l3-U at half time. A fumbled pass from cenf ter in the end zone gave the Commandos a two point safety early in the second half. Galantes run from deep in Marshall territory to the Panther 28 was the highpoint in the Marshall scheme of things. Oct. 3-Marshall vs. Amundsen-Marshalls league clash with Amundsen saw the Commandos coming out on the short end of a 22-6 score. After Marshalls defense held Amundsens Vikings scoreless in the opening quarter, Amundsens scoring machine started to click by scoring two touchdowns followed by an extra point and a safety to bring the score to- tal to a l5-O deficit for the Commandos. Mitchell in- tercepted a pass to account for the only Commando touchdown. The Vikings scored again in the last quarter to complete the days work, -1 hugh-I 43.2, 4. 'M , 1 f'.,'-f' r .7 ' 1 4 . I' Oct. 10-Marshall vs. Steinmetz-Marshall showed little success in scoring as a powerful Steinmetz scored 30-6 at Hanson Park. Steinmetzs title con- tenders were sparked by quarter back Norris's south- paw passes and loe Rizzis runs. Marshalls only counter came as a result of a sixty yard march in the third quarter, Steinmetz managed to score a touch- down in every quarter including two in the second quarter. Marshalls only consolation was the fact that it was to be the only team to score against Steinmetz in three regular season games. xl xv! Km.. 1' - . 60 51.21 ., . . . xxx- Oct. 17-Marshall vs. Tcdt+A slim and chilled crowd watched Taft hand the Commandos a 13-U defeat as the Com- mandos suffered their fourth straight setback. The Taftmen took advantage of a Marshall fumble on a pass from center in the first period to take a 6-U lead. Taft added another 7 points to their margin in the second half of the game for insurance. The Commandos had many short-lived rallies which were ended by Marshall fumbles. Oct. 23-Marshall vs. RoosevelteMar- shall's gridiron heroes escaped the White Divisions cellar by humiliating Roosevelt 25-U and thereby dropping the Roosevelt team into the leagues cellar in the season's final regulation contest. The Commandos broke the ice with a safety resulting from a blocked punt that went out of the end zone. Marshall added to its point total with Ray Galantes touchdown and Frank Leone's point after touchdown to give the Commandos a 9-U lead at the end of the first quarter. The Marshallites continued pressing and lost the ball on downs on the Roosevelt one inch mark- er. However the Commandos managed to score another safety in the same way as the first two-pointer was tal- lied, Two more touchdowns, followed by extra points, were scored in the last half, one in each quarter. Mar- shall thus left l-lanson Park with a 25-O triumph, and for the first time during the season made all three conversions attempted. Marshall vs. Farragut-The Marshall football team climaxed the l952 grid campaign with an astounding 38-6 ex- liibition triumph over an outclassed Farragut squad. Ed Finley and Ray Galante put the Marshallites on the scoreboard via the touchdown route 12-O in the first period. The point after touchdown followed to make it 13-O, Galante, playing his last game with the Maroon and Gold, duplicated this feat in the second quarter with the help of Frank Leone. Farragut coun- tered in the final quarter to avoid a shutout with Rudy Mudjer carrying the ball. Two more touchdowns were added in the final quarter by Marshall with Ray Galante tallying both times. Altho Marshall has one of the smallest soccer teams in the city, they showed more fight this season than many larger teams. Coached by Mr. Klem, Marshall finished its league schedule with a record of two wins, one tie, and nine losses to gain a tie for fifth place with McKinley. However in its exhibition games, the Commando soccer squad fared much better, gaining a tie with Oak Park, which later be- came State Champion, and a win over Lake Forest. Marshall's first league game gave an indication of how the season was to go as we lost 8-2 to a Schurz team, which wound up in first place at the seasons end. The Commandos bounced back after the Schurz defeat to tie Von Steuben, a traditional opponent, 2-2. Because of the Commando squads youth and lack of experience, the soccer team lost the next five games to older and more experienced teams. Von Steuben proved to be our favorite opponent as they became the first of two teams to be defeated by Marshall in the l952 league soccer season. Cal Kirsh, Marshall's goalie, had to make very few saves in that game, as his teammates backed him up with fine defensive work, The second McKinley game saw Marshall score a goal in the last few minutes to Win 2-U. In the second Lane game, Les Polisky scored two goals, an accomplishment the whole Marshall team had been unable to perform all season. Never- the-less, the Commandos succumbed to the powerful Lane team 8-4. 4 s LY One of the most exciting soccer games the Comf mandos played was the exhibition match with Oak Park. Oak Park managed to score one point in the first half despite the brilliant goal-tending by Mar- shalls Cal Kirsh. The Commando team displayed the fight and spirit that had made other Marshall soccer squads famous in the past by holding Oak Park to such a close score. ln the closing minutes of the sec- ond half, the Commandos started a rush at the Oak Park net only to be stopped by a foul. Bill Wasiak then came in and made the foul shot to tie the score at l-l which remained as the final score. Much of the credit for this tie could be placed on goalie Kirsh who made 61 saves. ln the Lake Forest game, Mar- shall Won l-O as goalie Kirsh shut out our opponents. One of the brightest spots in this season's play could be found in the fine goal tending by Cal Kirsh. His fine spirit and defensive work was recognized by the other coaches who placed him on the tirst-string of the all-city team. Kirsh also made all-state, In most of the games, Kirsh had to hold the opposing team to one point to insure a victory. Bill Wasiak also placed on the squad at half-back. Another Marshall player, Ioe Astrachan, also made all-state on the sec- ond-string team. Les Polisky's fine ballhandling was another bright spot in this season's play. Since all of these players are returning next season, Marshall's record will most likely improve over this year's per- formance. Much credit must be given to Coach Klem who instilled fight and spirit into the team. 63 run ' 1-f, Sept. 23 Sept. 25 Sept. 30 Oct. 2 Oct. 9 Oct. 14 Soc C el' SOFQJ Marshall Schurz 8 Oct. 16 Marshall Marshall Von Steuben 2 Oct. 21 Marshall Marshall Crane 6 Oct. 23 Marshall Marshall Tilden 6 Oct. 28 Marshall Marshall McKinley 2 Nov. 3 Marshall Marshall Lane 10 Nov. 6 Marshall Total Marshall- 19 points Opponents- Recorcl - 2 - 9 - l - Tied for Fifth place Outstanding accomplishment-held Oak Park, state champion, to a O 2 2 O 2 4 62 points l to l tie. Levin, Free- man, Warshawsky, and Viner scored l2, ll, lU, and lO points to give Marshall balanced scoring. ln second round play, the Com- andos eliminated a taller Dunbar team 61-50. Dunbar shot ahead by l2 points early in the second quarter, but Marshall came back and gained the lead for good at 47-45 on 2 free throws by Freeman. Viner, Levin, and Free- man led the Commandos with l8, l4, and lU points. Che auarter final game again saw Marshall come from behind to defeat McKinley 70-67. Levin led all Marshall scorers with 29 points. Marshall after losing most of the game went ahead for the first time at 47-46 late in the third guarter. The lead changed constantly and the score was tied four times in the next five minutes before the Commandos pulled away to stay. ln a game that broke the hearts of the Marshall team, free throws in the final seconds broke a 70-all tie and enabled Roose- velt to win 72 to 70. The score of the game was tied 9 times with the lead ex- changed l5 times. Marshall was leading 65-58 late in the fourth quarter but lost that lead and had to overcome a 7U-66 Roosevelt lead. War- shawsky was the leading Marshall scorer with 16 points. Lane rolled up a 39-28 lead in the first three quarters but the Commandos rallied in the final period to deadlock the score at 44-all.
