We know, of course, that he was here at Marshall for almost a quarter of a century. We know that he taught a pre-school remedial class one full period beyond that required of any teacher. There are other things about Mr. Burks that we know with measured accuracy. But what can one say in appraising Mr. Burks the citizen, the teacher, the scholar, the gentleman. That measurement is found in a host of grateful Marshall graduatesg it is in the hearts of admiring fellow teachersg it is being perpetuated in the members of his devoted family. It is in the great American tradition. 15- 3. K K ' Tigg- . .. Aixgiff' fr X X s X XA S S if ..., .SSS ,X .- X qfwqsx X my X551 iff, - xi? HUNT To Graduates of john Marshall High School: It is a pleasure indeed to be privileged to greet you through the pages of your Yearbook, and I want you to know of my appreciation of the invitation to do so which has been so graciously extended to me. ' At the conclusion of your high school career it is fitting that there should be a review of some of the things which you have done and your Yearbook affords such a record. For a long time to come, it will recall your happy high school days and the significant accomplishment which has been yours during these four years. The things which you have learned will be of value to you throughout your life. The skills which you have acquired will serve to afford you a means of livelihood in the years ahead. And knowledge and skills together will make you a valued mem- ber of your community. It has been said that high school years are the happiest of our lives. I know that you have made the most of them and that as you look back on them you will fully appreciate what they have meant to you. You are now equipped to go forward to make your place in the world either through immediate employment or through advanced training in further preparation. For the greatest success to be yours is my earnest wish. You are well fortified to earn it and I am confident that you will apply what you have acquired in high school to assure it. Faithfully yours, HEROLD C. HUNT General Superintendent of Schools 7 Do you remember back four years when you came to Marshall uncertain of the reception you would receive, concerned over the magnitude of the building and its devious passages, constantly surprised and delighted by the pleasant learning experiences that unfolded before you? Then, too, there were besides the educa- tional offerings many social and athletic events. These all contributed to the de- velopment of your present well-rounded personality. After four years of pleasant experiences you have developed a specific pattern of behavior that should carry you successfully along the highway of life's endeavors. Now you are about to leave. We hope and trust that you are entering the next episode of your career with con- fidence, a confidence that is born of your experiences nurtured by your training here, and brought to fruition by the association of your classmates and teachers at Marshail. We, who have watched you grow and develop in assurance, dignity, and poise, are certain that the society into which you are about to enter as a youthful par- ticipant will be a more vigorous, a more thoughtful, and a more progressive society because of your contribution to its progress and to its thoughtful deliberations. The need foryour special aptitudes, enthusiasm and vigor were never more ap- parent than now. Truly, if you plunge into the problem of life with the same enthusiasm that you have demonstrated in attaching your high school problems, we, the staff members at Marshall, can be confident that the future welfare of this community has been entrusted to capable hands. DAVID S. COLE 9 I MRS. MARIE G. WOOLSEY It is later than it seems.,'f lt has been well said that youth is a spendthrift-old age a miser. Time is one asset equally given to all, iwell invested by some and squandered by many. You, the graduates of today, were the Freshmen of yesterday. Life accelerates. College years will Hy away. It will be easy to drift with the thought of pulling up tomorrow, next month or next year. Inasmuch as your habits will outlive your powers see that your ambition begins not at the close of life for Hlt is later than it seems. MARIE G. WOOLSEY IO ATTICNDANCIC Ul FICIl'1 I 1' ry! SOCCER Marshall's Hooters, one of the eight soccer squads in the city, completed the 1948 season with a record of five victories and three losses, the last defeat to Crane, 3-2, on November 4 at Key Branch Stadium in the semi-finals of the city soccer play-offs. The soccer squad under the direction of Coach -lim Klein opened the league campaign on September 23 with an 8-6 loss to Lane's eleven, the team which went on to capture the North Section and city crowns. The Commandos achieved their initial triumph September 28 by blanking their old nemesis, Schurz, 4-0. Four of the wins, two each over Schurz and Von Steuben, moved the Marshall soccermen to a second place final standing while the fifth success was an 8-0 conquest of Lake Forest on the suburban field in the lone M-G exhibition tilt. EWS The News staff were an energetic, husiness- like group during the 1948-49 year. Costs of publishing limited the number of issues hut the staff attempted to make up for nuxnlmers by the quality of the work. The stall' was notified of its All-American honors won lay the issues pulm- lished from February 1948 to -Iune 1948. A banquet at the Graeinere Hotel sponsored by the Combined staffs of the News and Re- view clirnaxed the social activities of the fall semester. RE IE STO be or not to be was the atmosphere in which the 1949 Review stall found themselves at the opening of school in September, 1948. Having overcome many very diflicult problems, L'To be won in the long, tough contest. Picture taking and sales promotions enlivened the earlv part of the fall semester, while the XVho's Wiho Contest was the striking feature of the january and june senior Review activities. The challenging task of assembling, identifying, and expressing the multitude of details was met fairly well. The job of rounding up the slrag- glers was not easy but the great number of seniors who faithfully answered every call made a more generous contribution to the success of the Review than they or the staff fully realized. It was the aim of both staffs to create a book each page of which would be distinguished for beauty and selection. It is in the hope that they came close to achieving their goal that they publish the 1949 Review.
