Carries On On April 5, 1947, a tor- nado swept through the town of Marshall. Fortunately, it was not a school day, for had it been, there would probably have been a loss of lives. The towers and other ornamental structures which were distinc- tive features of the building were blown down. The heaviest damage was done to the rear of the building. The assembly room roof was completely re- moved, and the rain poured in, warping the floors and damaging desks and other properties. The roof over the southwest corner of the gym was also torn off. The entire third floor was damaged beyond repair for the reaminder of the school term and had to be closed. The agriculture room, directly under the assembly room, also had to be closed. The closing of these rooms made it necessary to put classes in the library and in rooms or- dinarily used only for storage. Classes which were affected included Agriculture, General Science, Biology, and all commmercial classes. The gym was turned into a study hall, and physical -gli r--4'7 1 X uf..-JQ-D. ,lv '4 fi x-- Vi' education classes were held outdoors, weather permitting. The busts of Washington Irving and William Shakespeare, which adorned the front of the assebmly room for many years, were not damaged by the tornado. Neither were the fossisls and other biological specimens that have been colleted over a long period of years. But the old oak tree that stood near the left front entrance walk was broken off at the trunk. The loss of it was like the loss of an old friend, for on nlany a hot noon hour students have sat in its shade and on some extremely hot days classes were held beneath its branches. NORMA KINSEL AND LISA FREEMAN still find the front of the high school building a good place to relax even though the old oak tree has been gone for many years.
