I, IN REVIEW Tlllf 1933 FOOTBALL TEAM appears to be ready for at-lion. Considerable changes have lim-n iimdz' in uniforms and protective gear sinu' lhis photo was taken. Becoming The Pride of the Lions It Marshall High School has always stressed a complete education of mind and body. Athletics has helped to serve the education of the body. Keeping students in shape, leading active, healthy lives is important at Marshall. In the early years of Marshall football has played a more or less important part in the history of the school. In the fall of 1897 the first football team was organized. There were eleven boys in the high school deemed large enough to play football, so each was assured a place on the team. Only two games were played against out-of-town teams, Zi one with Martinsville and one with Paris. In 1911 the team won every game except one, which was a tie. An undefeated season was completed in 1922. For a few years due to lack of interested and public support, athletics did not mean much to the school. After the new gymnasium was built a greater interest was taken in athletics. In the fall of 1924- the basketball team took fourth place in the State District tournament. In 1929 the football won its first-ever Wabash Valley Championship and the basketball team won the county tournament. For many years sports were offered only to male students. Girls were afforded the opportunity for interscholastic com- petition with the formation of the Girls, Athletic Association fG.A.A.j. in 1927 by Miss Kermit Cochran. Today a variety of sports are offered to both boys and girls with many trophies added to the trophy case each year. ffcfjixix . SSS X f fx Nay 9-' X WM W N X W B ,Mx .gf SMALL .SIIALIL X30 A is?
