One objectixe that has remained constant has been the desire to educate the students of Marshall in the most professional manner possible. A new chapter in lVlarshall's history was written when the first teachers' strike oc- cured October 23, 1985. .lyk When a new village, town or city was laid out history records that a part of the land was set aside for homes, churches and schools. So it is true of Marshall. Col. Wm. B. Archer, who laid out the town of Marshall, reserved several blocks for the use of schools and an academy. ln 1835 in the plat of the original town of Marshall. square number five, on which the North Elementary school now stands, was donated for education whereon to erect a col- lege. On the southwest corner of this block the following winter a man by the name of Thomas Handy taught a term of school there. IN REVIEW . Y V W ' v f' A I if V E Mg! .Hi ' :if 1 ,Vi 1 -iff The orgmtal high school building on North bixth Street was first occupied in 1903 German, Latin, French and Creek were taught in the classical department. Commerce and Agriculture were also taught. Mrs. Eliza Whitlock was the teacher of in- strumental music and pupils had use of the piano for 320 extra. Pencil Drawing was 356 ex- tra. Dr. Wm. Edison was vocal music instructor. giving three lessons a week of one hour each. for 34 per session. The year was divided into two sessions of twenty-two weeks each. Summer session com- menced the last Monday in May and the winter session the second Monday in November..A vacation of six weeks after the winter session and two weeks at the end of the summer term was given. In April, 1853. at the close Of the winter session 133 males and 76 females were enrolled. After the purchase in 1871 of the college building for public school purposes, Mr- LS' Kilbourn became principal of schools- as the . . erin nine.
