On May 1, the gym was transformed into a southern plan- tation complete with the stately mansion surrounded by well- manicured shrubs and lovely magnolia trees. Members of the junior class spent many hours planning for the actual construction of the prom. Guests at the plantation were able to stroll around the garden foun- tain, dine on some southern delicacies, or dance to the music of the Artistics. Votes that had been cast earlier in the evening were tallied to reveal the new king and queen of the prom. At 10:00 p.m. on the plantation veranda, Tracy Morton was crowned queen and Darin Schaefer was crowned king. Senior attendant was Robin Boyer and Suzanne Davidson was voted the junior attendant. An evening of Through the Years was topped-off with the after prom party hosted by the American Legion at the post head- quarters. Students were able to play games, compete for prizes, or have their fortune told by a for- tune teller. Truly it was an evening that will last through the years in everyone's memory. of ' - 1 ., -,. Graduation is REALLY over when the cap and gown is folded and put back in the box to be returned to the cap and gown company. Bonnie Simpson, Molly Rem- linger and Ginny English dutifully pack-up the cap and gown. This Ending is Heallq a Beginning The last thirteen years of schooling have pointed towards this moment known as graduating. Formal schooling is now over, there will be no more homework, no more pep sessions, and no more school rules. Even though graduating means many lasts there will soon be many firsts', in the lives of each graduate. As school board president, Nor- man Yelley, mentioned in his remarks, the majority of MHS graduates have spent all thirteen years of education in Marshall. Yet, not many of those spending thirteen years being educated in Marshall plan to find a job in or around Marshall. Demands for further schooling and employment will call most of the graduates to other parts of the state and even other parts of the world. As each student received the diploma, it was a signal that while high school days were ended, life in the real world was just begin- ning to happen. To all go the best wishes. Allan McDaniel, Darin Schaefer, John Hollenbeck, Troy Johnson, John Fields, and Barry Leitch display their graduation Attire worn under their gown and mortar board. At least this was less expensive than a new suit and tie cost. The camera caught this crew just after the dress rehearsal for graduation was over. After every commence- ment service the darkening evening sky is filled with the flash from cameras as relatives capture on film those moments that will never happen again. For many members of the graduating class, the commencement service will be one of the last times they will be together. Needless to say there are tears of sadness as goodbyes are said. Jennifer Shotts and David Shotts express their joy to each other as they embrace. After the last note of the recessional has sounded, the last goodbye has been said, and after the last graduation party has ended can each member of the class of 1982 really believe that those high school days are finally finished. The season consisted of many exciting highlights, including a one-point thriller over Matrinsville which proved to be the decisive game in the Little Illini Conference. The team also made an appearance in the state playoffs. Many say the Marshall defense led by All-State linebacker Troy Johnson was the best in this area. Many opposing teams will attest to the fact that Marshall's defense was one of the hardest hitting around. The offense also had a successful season, as they outscored their opponents on total points 238 to 96. With eleven returning lettermen next year, the future looks bright for the Lions. First, team all-conference defensive end, John Fields, was one of the leaders on defense as well as doing an outstanding job on the line. Mike Sherrill was nam- ed to the first team all- conference offensive line at the tackle position. He also played defensive tackle. John Hollenbeck started and performed well at both offensive and defensive tackle positions. Kenny Grooms helped team spirit reach new heights while performing well at the tackle position. With such fine team ef- fort from these and all members it is no wonder the team had a winning season. The Lions were placed on probation and were not allowed to compete in the regional tour- nament because of violations during the summer recreation program. Most felt the penalties were too stiff, but the Lions did not let the controversy affect the way they played basketball. Highlights of the season included a twenty-one point win at West Vigo and a twenty point win over Martinsville in the last home game. The team was led by five seniors, all of whom were starters throughout the season. Each senior led the team in at least one statistical category. Shan Smith led the Lions with a 14.1 scoring average. Smith was also the team leader in rebounding with 193. Troy Johnson led the FG percentage of 51.6fZ5. Darin Schaefer managed 46 steals while Tom DePasse had 86 assists. Joe Bruner was the team leader in blocked shots with forty-one Junior, B. J. Livingston led the Lions from the frees throw line by shooting 7O.9'75. The math department under the guidance of Mr. Robert Mor- ris, Mr. David Enkoff and Mr. Rod Rector, make careful plans that each stu- dent can make advances in the mathematical skills. Ranging from the basic general math to college algebra and trigonometry students learn the various functions and rules of math. A new addition to the depart- ment this year was the com- puter math class taught by Mr. Enkoff. A TRS-80 III with line printer was pur- chased by the corporation for the purpose of instructing students in basic program- ming skills. Students developed pro- grams that would perform mathematical functions as well as those that benefited the school. Plans are being made to increase the com- puter storage and memory systems. SCHOOL BUS Drama is the expres- . 7 sion of the soul' 1981-82 officers are President, Rex Woodg Vice-President, Missy Wichmang Secretary, Pam Williamsg Treasurer, Diane Wallace. Sponsored by Mrs. Sue Shawver, the Drama Club is a very active organiza- tion that is responsible for performing two children's plays each school year. They also go to the Community Theatre to watch performances that will hopefully make them better actors and actresses. Many of the Drama Club members are members of the elite Thes- pians group which is quite an honor. - A .X 55? eg? Sgr ' iii i lf? Great demands are placed on cast members to memorize lines, remember cues, and assume the role of the character being portrayed. A Skate-a-thon was held to help raise money for members going to Florida over Easter break. Many pizza parties and get-to-gethers were sources of fun times and some serious discussions. A brother and sister in the same high school? Nothing unusual, you sayl? Well, then, how about a brother or sister in each of the four grade levels at MHS? That is exactly the case with the Ketner family. Betsy is a senior, Dan is a junior, Mike, a sophomore, and Marty a freshman. The four Ketners, though close in age, are varied in interests. Betsy enjoys swimming on a hot summer day while Dan would rather fix a car. On a rainy, mud- dy day Marty gets his gun and goes hunting, but he makes sure Mike doesn't have any gas in his motorcycle. The Ketner household is relatively quiet, with the usual sibling rivalry absent. Marty attributes this to the fact that each one goes a separate way, rarely crossing each other along the way.
