Inherent in a quilt is the idea of sharing, a feeling of give and take that began with the first quilting bees. Originally, various patches in quilts were used to recollect important events in the lives of the people who made them. Quilt makers used fabrics from wedding gowns, christening robes, and other important clothing. Originality was also important, as each quilt was unique and signalled special memories for the person who made it. High school life and each year's memories are much like the multi- shaped pieces of a patchwork quilt. Re- membrances are juxtaposed, with each token and recollection creating a piece of the -whole. In retrospect, the events of l976- l977 may seem little more than a patchwork of jumbled color: the bril- liant red of MHS football uniforms against a vivid green fieldg the bright yellow of a school bus or Farrah Faw- cett's hair, the faded blues of favo- rite denimsg the glistening whites of the snow of '77 or Jimmy Carter's smile. However, with the mellowing of time, the jumbled colors form patterns. Pieces of color blend, and a solid, warm memory is formed. J Z ' ,M f egg , W is rr f .ff fmyl :mf-I f, f Win! Although Marshall met defeat in its first game against Paris, game two showed the Lions on top behind superior passing and defensive play Against Robinson, the Lions were put down. The first conference game pitted Marshall against Oblong, which saw the team victorious on a last minute touchdown pass. MHS was trium- phant over Palestine. Homecoming and St. Elmo were next, and St. Elmo went nowhere. The team traveled to Martinsville for another victory, and came home to win against Casey. Looking to playoffs, the team over- ran itself and fell prey to Cumber- land. MHS entered the state play- offs for the second time Nov. lO, but even its passing and running abilities could not bring victory against Arcola. Last fall, Marshall participated in the district tournament. Team members finished well but fell short of a sectional berth. Jon Preyo qualified in- dividually for the sectional play. The team had a very good record, including tough competition from larger area schools. The schedule was smaller than previous years though, because most schools now play fall golf. Brmgs Memories With the advent of a new school year comes renewed excitement and antici- pation of classes, sports, activities, and friends. As the year draws to a close, however, the sharp tingle of excitement dulls and the anticipation fades. Marshall High School's annual staff has saved bits and pieces of events of the past year and entered them in- to a patchwork of memories for the students of MHS. The Patchwork of 77 is now presented to the student body.
