emor G ass gastory Seniors of 1956, these forthcoming words will bring back many memories for THIS IS YOUR LIFE. You began your high school career in the fall of 1952. As freshmen, you chose for your leaders: president, Jim Kalthoffp vice-president, Glenn Gilkeyp and secretary-treasurer, George Kilp. You remember the Freshman-Sophomore Assembly that year because it depicted your own school life in A Day at MHS . That was the year, too, that our basketball boys traveled to Columbia to win fourth place in the Class A State Basketball Tournament. . In the fall of 1953, you began to further your education by beginning that year as sophomores. This time you chose Nelson Weber for president: Dale Driskell for vice-president: and Joyce Krager for secretary-treasurer. You elected Mary Maude Ellis to represent your class in the annual Sophomore Pilgrimage. Many of you helped to port ray the life of a Forty-Niner in the annual Preshman-Sopho- more Assembly. You are now half way through your high school years, and even though the way became rougher, it didn't disappoint or disillusion you because you were more sure of yourselves. Then came your junior year, and you had much work ahead of you. You chose as your officers: Nelson Weber, president: Mary Maude Ellis, vice-president, and Margie Vawter, secretary-treasurer. From your junior play, State Fair , you realized more than enough money to give the seniors of that year a prom which took place In a Spanish Garden . You delved into the future for your annual Junior- Senior Assembly, MHS in the Year 2000 , but for the Junior-Senior Banquet, you went back through the years to present The Gay Nineties . All in all, you had a very successful junior year, but it was over all too soon. The year, Senior , loomed ahead of you, and you could hardly wait for the fall of 1955 to come so you could start the beginning of the end . Before you realized it, it was your' senior year and eighty-four of you anticipated graduation. For your last year in high school, you selected Carolyn Barr for president, George Kilp for vice-pres- ident, and Phyllis Mobley for secretary-treasurer. B. K. Miller was chosen to represent your class in the State DAR Citizenship Contest. The Junior-Senior Assembly was The Present at MHS . Your senior play was Charley's Aunt . You took your senior trip to Chicago on April 13, 14, 15, and feast- ed at the Rose and Buckner Barbecue on May 3. The juniors gave you a prom that you will long remember. The theme was Blue Heaven and all of you had a wonderful time. After the prom the Junior Chamber of Commerce gave a biggparty for the first time in the school's history. It went over in a big way. At the Junior-Senior Banquet on May 18, the theme Cafe De Paree was carried out in a very effective way. Donna Reed read the Senior Class Will and Jim Kalthoff read the Class Prophecy. You all remember Achievement Day on May 22, because it was primarily your day . Carolyn Barr was chosen to sit in the seat of honor as Fair hall. Her lrother, Glenn Barr was her escort and Sara Goldin, her attend- ant. She was crowned DY? F-Farnham. The candles were lighted by Sandra Wetton and Joyce Krager. Best Citizens were Margie Vawter and Rob Collins. Wanda Sims and Sam Dyer occupied the stations of Best Sports. Mary Maude Ellis and Nelson Weber were chosen Most Industrious, and Nelda Piper and George Kilp were named Most Courteous. Letter awards were announced by: B. K. Miller, in the area of scholarship: Janie Shaw, culture, Kenneth Murdock, leadership, And Mary Ann Case, service. Your commemcement speaker was Mr. Carl Bolte, and The Reverend Warner Miles gave the baccalaureate sermon. Rob Collins was the valedictorian and Mary Maude Ellis was salutatorian. Ranking third and fourth were B. K. Miller and Donna Reed. Carolyn Barr, the president, presented the gift, a check for seventy-five dollars. Sara Goldin was the selected senior who played the instrumental solo. The sen- ior sextette, composed of Joyce Krager, Janie Shaw, Sara Goldin, Donna Reed, Edith Fluty, and Mary Maude Ellis, was the senior small ensemble selected to sing at commencement. Sara Goldin gave Hold High The Torch , while Phyllis Mobley and Joan Burnside lighted the candles. You marched out of the high school auditorium for the last time to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance , and though you had your diplomas, you also felt a lump in your throats and you admitted that those' four were the best years of your life . 25
