DORIS ANN HEM EYER Girls' Glee Club F. H. A. Hospital Room Operetta Chorus Senior Class History Once upon a time in the fairyland called U. S. A. there was a wee small harrilet, Marshall, nestled in the rolling corn- fields of County Saline. In this wee small hamlet, there was a class of students whose title was Senior. These seniors were walking along that long path known as Life. Their goal was a signpost, Graduation, not far in the hazy future. But as they approached this post their thoughts wandered backward on the Path, back through misty memories to a sign, Freshman. As a baby taking his first stumbling steps, so the green frosh meandered aimlessly--until three noble leaders came to the fore. Their royal titles emblazoning them with glory, Presi- dent Marvin Lickey, Vice-President Bud Wright, and Secre- tary-Treasurer John Vasilopoulos, made those steps firm and sure. Proclaiming their new-found assurance to the world, an assembly on television was performed and they passed their first test with flying colors. Proceeding along the path of Life, a new signpost loomed in the distance, Sophomore. New leaders rose as the old be- came absorbed once more by the ranks, President Marvin Lickey, Vice-President Ronnie Stonum, and Secretary-T reas- urer Susie Jones. These leaders raised the banner even higher as confidence grew and to prove their mettle they laughed at themselves in the assembly, A Day At M. H. S. Banners in- deed blazed as M. H. S. became fourth in the jousting tourna- ment referred to as the Class A State Basketball Championship. The road became steeper and more rocky. Unseen dan- gers lurked around corners, but every cloud had a silver lining and the signpost, Junior, finally appeared on the horizon, clear and unobscured. At the crest of the hill, a new world shone, bright and clear as if bathed in gold. Greed, Temptation, and Avarice were defeated in the Royal Crusade and President Susie Jones, Vice-President Kay Reid, and Secretary-Treasurer Judy Deal took their stations proudly as new leaders for the Seniors. Dear Ruth was selected as the play for the Grand Lottery. Tickets were sold fast and furiously with all records beaten to give further glory to the Senior cause. Rounding a corner, blary circus music and the tinkly sound of the calliope met their ears as the sign, Junior Jubilations and Senior Sensations of the Circus World, came glaringly into view. As the sound and color faded into the misty past, the thought of the grand ball of the King drifted into their thoughts. One month of time away but a year of work, for plans included 8000 flowers and zillions of streamers. But working makes the time pass faster and finally the hour grew nigh. The air became balmy, laziness crept in and dreams of a Hawaiian Paradise finally came true. From Paradise it was only one step away to touch Stardust. Imagine a banquet of Cloud Fluffs and Moonglow. These Seniors were indeed attaining a fitting climax to another turning on the Path of Life. As summer's glory deepens into the magnificence of au- tumn, so the life of a senior blooms into full color along those last few steps of high school lane. Leaders with features of victory rise to the foreg President Lois Smith, Vice-President Joe Bob Ryan, Secretary-Treasurer Wilhelmina Hudspeth. With such a glorious present, where is there to look but forward as the banner M. H. S. In the Year 2000 drifted into these Senior minds. Hazily they dream of the future as silently family ties begin to tear. Toys become scattered on the Path, memories of tricycles and books are recalled--for this was the land of Fam- ily Circle . Little white pu.ffs of smoke, a chug-chuging sound and the kingdom of Chicago around the bend meant victory for that battle of--The Senior Trip. To toast the victory, the king's garden was opened and his majesty's favorite haberdasher gave a bar- becue in celebration. ' Onward, ever onward-for who can turn back onthe Path of Life? The eastern horizon seems to be dawning lighter, ideas form of that last sign, Graduation, growing clearer as the Sen- iors progress along their way. But youth is never serious long, and with plans of the Royal Ball in view who dreams of Gradu- ation? Each year the king's lackeys, the Juniors, plan and pre- sent a ball with the Seniors as honored guests. A uenalty is imposed if each year's ball is not more ex- travagant than the lastg and this one was transplanted to Spain-- to a little Spanish garden. The Path of Life is never straight and each turning grows harder. In their search for gaiety, mistakes were often made, but with wise and understanding leaders, their steps advanced firm and sure. The Junior lackeys never lacked ideas for fun, and the Gay Nineties Banquet became a reality under their nim - ble fingers. Fun reigned supreme at the banquetg the king's favorite astrologer appeared with her crystal ball and glimpses of the Senior future came alive with the seance of Mystic Kathryn. Another turning on the Path, another sign-this one the largest they had encountered. It read in bold black letters, Achievement Day! Duchesses and Dukes, Kings and Queens, all were here to observe the honors presented to His Majesty's Court. A special court of honor wasselected, with Fair Marshall, Susie Jones, ruler of the occasion. Best Citizens, Jean Buck and Charles Dureng Best Sports, Judy Deal and Clifford Morris: Most Industrious, George Ann Patterson and Jack Harris, Most Courteous, Mary Jane Showalter and Kenneth Opfer shared her honors on this day of days. Graduation always seems that unattainable position, but when finally earned, it passes as if in a dream. To these Sen- iors, it truly appeared this way, for as they turned, the sign Baccalaureate loomed huge and awesome in the twilight. Com- mencement was now only another turning in the future: for some it meant tears, for others joy, but for all, remorse of the fact that the Teen-age chapter of Life was fast closing. As always honors were presented to the deserving ones. The king held his last court, excitement ran highg the highest honors of the land were to be conferred. Finally the great moment arrived--- Valedictorian and Salutatorian were crowned. The signpost, Graduation, w Out onto the brink of Life passed our Seniors. Behind them the strains of Pomp and Circumstance grew soft as the Doors of Teen-age Life closed. But a final word was heard. lt seemed to drift from the star-filled sky. Spoken in a soft voice, it said: Hold high the torchl You did not light its glow-- 'Twas given you by other hands, you know. 'Tis yours to keep it burning bright: Yours to pass on when you no more need light, For there are other feet that we must guide, And other forms go marching by our side: Their eyes are watching every smile and tearg And efforts which we think are not worth-while Are sometimes just the very help they need, Actions to which their souls would give most heedg So that in turn they'll hold it high And say, l've watched someone else carry it this way, Hold high the torchl You did not light its glow-- Twas given you by other hands, you know, I think it started down its pathway bright The day the Maker said, Let there be light. And He once said, who hung on Calvary's tree-- Ye are the light of the world. Gol Shine for Me . ' Z 5
