Not only did the Student Body send S 180 which covered food, some clothing, education and seven dollars a month for his other needs, but sixteen of the home rooms sent boxes valued at well over S 100, which umm , jp. Q' 1-Y ' .M H I .A .41 'JZQ '.,,, . W7 ww, pw I f I vzfwff-gf' V' ui' - .. 51 .,f included over 300 items, consisting of non-perishable food, clothing and various other articles for his comfort and amusement. The postage on these boxes was approximately 3564. This money was raised by the Council through the sale of pencils, booster-buttons and megaphones. Takis' appreciation of and faith in the Student Body has been so evident in his letters that the Council feels that they will want to adopt him for another year. As usual, the Council sponsored the Christmas baskets for the needyg they were also in charge of the election of the honor students and arrangements for Achievement Day. Other projects have been assisting in the revision of the School Constitution and the arranging a definite pattern for the display of school letters and emblerns on sweaters. wa... F. A. Farm for the past year. The operation of the farm was carried on by equipment donated by machinery dealers in Marshall. The Saline County Implement Co. furnished a Farmall Super C tractor, and equip- ment for use during the summers Others furnished tractors and equipment when needed. They were: A. G. Thomas Motor Co., Missouri Valley Motor Co., Marshall Tractor and Equipment Co., and Whitlock Coal and Implement Co. Labor was furnished by the F. F. A. members who each worked one day, in addition to the class time used. A All fertilizer was donated by M. F. A. and the Anhydrous Ammonia was put on by Mr. Lynn Akelman. Seed for all plots was donated by M. F. A. Seed Division and M. F. A. Central Co-op, except for the various corn varieties which were donated by the respective companies. Fuel for tractor operation was donated by Mr. Bernard Bockstetter, distributor, M. F. A. Oil Company Qand possibly othersj. ' The house and several lots on the property were rented to the State School for 5300 for the year. Approximately 17 acres each of corn and oats were planted last year. The pasture im- provement program is in line with the State Agricultural Program. . The purposes of the program are Qlj to compare popular Knew, varieties of Hybrid corn, QZQ to compare popular fnewl varieties of oats, Q31 to determine the response of corn to different levels of fertilizer applications, 14, to determine the response of oats to different levels of fertilizer applications, and particularly Nitrogen, and Q55 to use sweet clover as a green manure crop preceding corn, to build up the per cent of organic matter in the soil. This project is proving to be one of great value to the Vocational Agriculture Department. Credit for the idea is given to Mr. Percy Huston. To the Wood all Huston Bank We give our lasting thanks for its generosity in providing for free use of the farm. SIU!! Under the ab-le supervision of Coach Woody Gaba, this squad accelerated to greater heights than any other team in the history of Marshall High School, winning the con- ference championship, the regional tournament, and taking fourth in the State Tournament. When they entered the State Tourney, they were alloted little or no chance of winning anything, but when the smoke of the preliminary play cleared, there were three St. Louis teams and the Marshall Owls left. Inch for inch they drove, and the Owls were just as good, if not better, than any other team there, but the St. Louis teams were just too tall. This fighting, burning desire to win and their never say die spirit make this year's basketball team long to be remembered in the annals of M. H. S. With all this fighting spirit, it makes it hard to believe that the Owls were also long on sportsmanship, but at the State Tournament, the crowd marveled at the Owls' attitude toward the referees and the opposing players, in fact, the Owls set a new record for the fewest number of fouls in the Tournament. Woody Gaba turned in a fine job of coaching during the seasong for he not only led his team to theiheights, but he also brought the same team up from the depths. Last year practi- cally the same ball club took last place in the conference. Bringing them up to fourth in the State is a feat that deserves acclaim. To preserve their names for all time, the boys who composed this team, Our Team, are listed as follows: Bob Clark, Senior, Co-Captain, All Conference First Team, All District First Team, and All State Second Team, Gordon Collins, Senior, All Conference First Team, All District Second Team, Honorable Mention All Statey Berkeley Hall, Senior, Co-Captain, Bob Hinton, Junior, Johnny Vasilopoulos, Sophomore, Charles Odell, Junior, Kenneth Schuster.
