Lickey--whose friendship, neighborliness, and ability as a teacher has brought many happy and profitable moments to the student body. Mr. Lickey has been teaching in our high school system for the past nineteen years. He began his teaching in Marshall High School in the science and mathematics departments in 1931. He soon became inter- ested in promoting instrumental music in our school and after much hard work organized our orchestra in 1933 and our band in 1938. Since that time our school has been recognized all over the state for its fine instru- mental department due to Mr. Lickey's tireless efforts through the years. Mr. Lickey is not only outstanding in high school functions but works ceaselessly in many church and community organizations. It is our hope that the future students of Marshall High School will gain as much inspiration and knowledge from Mr. Lickey as have the students who now know him. 81 ' 2. s. MAI, Kr. The letters M.H.S. are sure to bring back memories-memories dating from 1881. To hundreds of graduates the building brought to mind by those letters is not the building now known as the High School, but may be one of four other buildings that have been known by that name. We are turning back a few pages ofthe 1950 Noctua to give you a glimpse of the past of M.H.S. -I We would like for you to recall with us first the thirteen men who have stood at the helm-steering our schools-and the years they served as superintendents of the Marshall Public Schools: W. Coleman, a class was organized to do high school work. They met in the Old Benton Cbuildingl while a new building to be known as Eastwood School was being erected. It was from Eastwood that this class was graduated in 1884. However, Old Benton can boast of having had in session the first two high school classes in Marshall. Old Benton stood on the some plot as the present Benton School. me A N 4 xt l I 'S , F ,rf I IQSIR -. .. M 1. 'W J ss-V i. Q SllPlllINllNlllNl A. H. It was built at a cost of S41,000. lt faced south on Vest and had two side entrances on the east and west. On December 7, 1921, the building was destroyed by fire. This left us without a high school building, so temporary quarters were moved to the North School Building. The fallen columns of the old high school lie on the south side of the present high school building. The cool, weathered pillars make a favorite gathering place for students on pleasant days. 0lHlHGH SCH00l PRlSl 1lHBH SCHUUI mr. 'um P5-f-sf. Q un.
