The highlights of the assembly were the procession of the princesses and princes, preceded by the tiny pages, the picturesque costumes of the trumpeters, and the crowning of Lloyd Kasal and Rita Svien by David Brill, king in 1942, and jane Hedlund, queen in 19-16. The Homecoming game was a real success as our spirited Greyhounds truly Hounded Harding , 53 to 7. Along with the A and B choirs they took hart in the Christmas Pro- gram, the Christmas Pageant, and the tratli- tional caroling in the halls. The presentation of The Mocking Bird hy A. Baldwin Sloane was the outstantling event of the season. To top off a successful year, the music tlepartment will sing at the Clommencement lixercises in june. It consisted of one and one-half weeks of class- room instruction, followed by a written examination given by the Minnesota Highway Department. Students who passed continued with the driving part of the course, eleven hours of observation and four and one-half hours of actual driving behind the wheel. The instructor, Mr. B. Shields, sat next to the student in a car which had dual controls. A small fee was charged to cover oil. gas, insurance, and other necessities. The purpose of the course was to teach safe driving with the hope of decreasing teen-age accidents. Thirty students completed the lessons this year. We hope many more will have the op- portunity next year. ,mfr Back Row: Ernest Payette. Ken Kerfuot. jerry Farrell. Mr. Shields. lim Kramer. 521111 SUUSHH. Gerald Shields. As the final curtain comes down and we prepare to leave the scene of our greatest triumphs and happiest moments, we look back with a feeling of deep appreciation for all that Marshall has given us. The humor and wit of pep assemblies, the solemnity of our classrooms, the thrill of basking in the spotlight of an athletic championshipwall those are now but memories. To you, Mr. Higbee and faculty, thanks for giving us among other things, .1 sense of fair play. To you, Mrs. McKenney, go our deepest thanks for your work, co-opera- tion, and cheerful determination that our high school lives might be happy ones. LEON COMBS Senior Class President 1918 - l949 OUR THANKS TO THE P.T.A. ELIZABETH HENRY THE JUNIOR CLASS To start off the year's activities, the juniors did a fine job of checking wraps at the 1948 Homecoming Dance held in the Marshall gym in October. In january they sponsored an assembly which featured the best talent from both the junior and senior classes. For Valentines Day, they planned and carried out a dance. They decorated the gym with the traditional red hearts and delivered singing valentines during the evening. They also took orders for valentines to be delivered in school. The most important event of the year was the S. Prom held on May 20. Richard Groesbeclc is class president, Don Williams, vice-president, ,Ioan Robinson, secretary, and Stewart Perry, treasurer. Mrs. Henry, a new teacher at Marshall this year, is class adviser. She has surely had a busy year and a most successful one, too. We congratulate her and the juniors for their good work. One more year has been added to the history of john Marshall High School and with it goes an exceptionally fine Spokesman paper and staff. The staff, under the guidance of Miss Gladys Scheiber, must be given much credit for its hard work in making our school paper one of the best. As in previous years, the Spokesman has again been honored with awards for its achievements in journalism from the American Press Association. The staff has been working under the pressure of high prices in printing and materials. but the paper has come out faithfully because of the wonderful student backing. Yes, the great basketball team, the Lakers , was here, sponsored by the Student Council. That assembly is just one of the many activities of the council. This group, made up of two representatives and one alternate from each homeroom, is under the guidance of Mr. Ernest Goulet. The Canteen Dances are also sponsored by this group. More dances? More assemblies? What will they undertake next? Only time will tell this. They have many plans but, of course, they have to accomplish one thing at a time. The council, one of the richest clubs in school, had discussed the idea of presenting the school with a new movie projector, but the Parent Teachers' Association has taken that as their aim for this year. john Durham - - - President Phil Foley - Vice President Sylvia Kaster - Secretary Phyllis Brier - Treasurer Page Farly-lu'f1 HALL MONITORS Q Bottom Picturej Row 1: Dorothy Martin, Martha Mura- Helen Galstad, Mary Alice Foote, kami, Gloria Williams, Barbara Cartwright, Rita Sorkin, Dorothy Miller. O' U Qv ir DICK MASON XDICK MASERA A Qc, FOOTBALL 1948 The supercharged Greyhounds rolled up and down the familiar Central Stadium turf for five con- ference victories and a share of their first football championship. Sporting a devastating aerial display, the Hounds racked up 111 points against only 39 for their opponents as they trisected the crown with Mechanic Arts and the story book team from johnson. Nick Combs garnered his second all-city berth as he waltzed into the end zone nine times and added five conversions for a total of 59 points, more than half of the Marshall sum, to run away with the leagues individual scoring honors. Tub McCarthy shifted his shapely hips through the oppos- ing lines for much valuable yardage, His passes were constantly connecting for needed first downs and six- pointers. Lloyd Kasal rounded out the all-city triumvirate as he proved to be the immovable object in Marshall's for- ward wall. His bolo-like tackles discouraged many opposing ball-carriers from trying Marshall's middle. Lowell McCarthy was the spark of the team as he navigated the offensive surge of the mechanized Moynaghmen. The only pass completed all season by Norm Green, flashy Wash- ington halfback, gave the Presidents a 12-12 tie with the Hounds. Combs and Kasal scored the Marshall touchdowns on passes by the McCarthy brothers. Tub and Spark played pitch-and-toss with Combs, Marshall points, as they shut out Monroe, 20-0. The 6-O score came as a result of Marv Reed's two- yard plunge into paydirt. Ends Combs and Sterling Owens each made fine de- fensive plays to stave off the final Trainer threat. Johnson took advantage of Lady Luck and brittle Marshall fingers as they decisioned our gridders, 13-7. Three Hound pass-receivers dropped potential touchdown tosses. T Marshall beat Wilson in a game that amounted to a junior Snow Bowl, 14-O. The plays that proved the most effective for the Greyhounds were the f1ve passes that Tubby McCarthy intercepted from the Red- men's Jerry Boldt. Sportswriter Don Riley had to remove his shoes to add up the Marshall score against Harding as the Hounds stepped on the pebble-puppies, 33-7. Combs knocked off 19 points to clinch his scoring title. Although the Greyhounds failed to stop jack Rock, Central's bullet, they did clinch the title-tie by outcharging the Minute- men, 19-7. Ray Landry scored two of the Marshall tallies on a run off left end and an interception of a Central pass followed by a dazzling 68-yard piece of broken field running by Combs. Mechanics drew the vote to represent the Saints in the Twin-City game with Minneapolis West. The gallant Trainers outfought the Cowboys but lost, 6-0. The Marshall hockey team came up with a mild surprise for the fans this year. It just missed the playoffs, winding up with a 4-5 record for the season. The pucksters entered almost every game as the underdog, and their improvement shows that hockey is becoming a major sport at St. Paul's smallest high school. The Hounds beat Mechanics 2-0, Monroe 4-1, Washington 4-1, and Wilson 2-1. They fell before Johnson 6-3, Harding 8-0, Humboldt 7-1, Central 5-2, and Murray 4-2. 50-W johnson, Harding, Humboldt, and Murray were the powers of the league. Phil Foley, Herschel Garrett BASKETBALL The 1948-49 edition of Marshalls cagers fought long and hard throughout the season but was unable to over- come its worst enemy, inconsistency. The Hounds at times looked and played like champions and with a gentle ges- ture from Lady Luck, they might have been champions. Marshall fared none too well at the hands of Hum- boldt in the season opener as they lost, 40-31. It was a case of too much jim Fritsche as the big fellow poured in COACH HANZEL 17 points to lead the Indians to victory. The basketeers then out-fought Mechanics to eke out a triumph, 43-41. Wilson was the next victim as the Hounds scorched the cords to hand the Redmen a 53-38 defeat. Marshall took a licking from Monroe, 39-24, as the Hounds were as hot as a popsicle. Coach Hanzel's athletes caught a second wind to rake in two more triumphs. The Hounds outplayed Murray, 44-34, and knocked off Johnson, 43-30. The night that Wglshington and Marshall met at Hamline found both teams failing to become accustomed to the change of floors. The Presidents outlasted the Hounds, 27-21. In one of the better games of the year Marshall tripped Central, 35-31. Hard- ing donated the sixth victory to the Hounds in the conference Hnale. The Maroons were driven into the floor, 50-26. The Hounds wound up in fourth place with a 6-3 record. Marshall eased by Wilson, 41-39, in their first playoff ga-me. The hoopsters lost a heart- breaker to our old nemesis, Humboldt, 33-29, in an overtime. The sharpshooters from Wasliing- ton won the consolation title by whipping the Hounds, 45-41. Bob McCarthy was a representative from Marshall on the second-string all-city team and Nick Combs ended up as the Hounds' leading scorer with a 9.3 average. Lloyd Kasal, jim Kramer, Phil Foley, Herschel Garrett, and Leo Lewis were steady performers for the Hounds and could always be depended upon. Marshall's small but hard working cross country squad ended the season in fifth place. Witli many experienced runners re- turning, the Marshall cross country squad should hit a new high. Pact Fijilj'-.rciwz Marshalls youthful track team had a fairly successful season although able to place only four men in the city finals. The 2-7 record of the '48 edition, although not impressive, shows that the Hounds lost four close games to run their string of one-run losses to ten for the past three years. In the opener against Murray, the Hounds held a 1-O lead in the fourth inning, but the Pilots turned loose their left-handed power and won, 6-1.
