O'Z5CA,TO'Z The Magistrate tor l94l is some- thing more than a pictorial review ot the year's activities at Marshall. The editors have sought to develop the theme, Education tor Democracy, in three important phases characteristic ot daily lite here in the school. They seek to show how Health, Service, and Wise Uses of Leisure are impressed upon our students as deti- nite and necessary attributes ot good citizenship. ln turning to these scenes of hap- py, familiar association, l trust that you will get a better understanding and acceptance ot the meaning ot education in a democracy. Training at public expense is not for the eleva- tion of the individual alone, but for this greater purpose: that the indi- vidual by reason ot his training and his better understanding ot free insti- tutions may so live and act that the attainable ideals of democracy may be realized. Lincoln's statue, Which stands in one of the halls at Marshall, is an everlasting symbol of one who lived and died for democ- racy. The picture of Iohn Marshall, after Whom Marshall High School was named, hangs in our halls to remind us of the great jurist Whose inter- pretations of the Constitution have secured for us many of our present- day liberties. mm is xhgi 5 ,,, is rg .Y --.f . i- 1,2 it ,I ,'f',W?
