Therefore, We proudly dedicate our yearbook to you, the teachers of Mar- shall, who by your instruction, guid- ance, and example have given us the inspiration to meet the challenge of democracy. This is a challenge all youth must meet if our country is to hold high the torch of liberty as a bea- con, a guiding light for the oppressed peoples of the earth, and if govern- ment of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth. Teachers of Marshall, accept our sincere thanks for your efforts in our behalf, We are profoundly grateful for the training you have given us in the American Way of life. O'Z5CA,TO'Z The Magistrate tor l94l is some- thing more than a pictorial review ot the year's activities at Marshall. The editors have sought to develop the theme, Education tor Democracy, in three important phases characteristic ot daily lite here in the school. They seek to show how Health, Service, and Wise Uses of Leisure are impressed upon our students as deti- nite and necessary attributes ot good citizenship. ln turning to these scenes of hap- py, familiar association, l trust that you will get a better understanding and acceptance ot the meaning ot education in a democracy. Training at public expense is not for the eleva- tion of the individual alone, but for this greater purpose: that the indi- vidual by reason ot his training and his better understanding ot free insti- tutions may so live and act that the attainable ideals of democracy may be realized. Danovsky Peck Collins With only two regulars returning, Coach Moynagh had a tough job moulding his l94U grid machine. Marshall finished its football campaign in second place for two consecutive years in the Little Senior League. ' Having a well-balanced line but a weak backfield at the beginning of the season, Coach Moynagh was forced to concentrate on defense. However, he was not discouraged. Plac- ing Feathers Danovsky and Dave Brill at the half posts and Lit Gardner at fullback, he was able to find his long desired scoring punch. The Red and Gray started the season with a 7-U defeat by Washington, 1939 Twin City champions, and a scoreless tie with Central, the second such tie of their series. The Red- skins won their first conference game, downing Murray,,6-U. With the Little Senior title at stake, Marshall encountered Monroe, defending champions, with the big Green defeating the hard-fighting Marshallites, 6-U. Marshall then won their homecoming game with an im- pressive l9-O victory over the Wilson eleven. ln a non-conference game the Red and Gray closed the season when they held the St. Paul Academy team to a scoreless tie, breaking an eleven-game Academy winning streak. lack Peck, Merle Collins, and Littleton Gardner played bang-up ball, each earning a posi- tion in the Little Senior All-City team. Al Niedorf, Sam Margolis, Albert Danovsky, and Nor- man Lassman won positions on the second All-City squad. Al Niedorf was the only player to be honored with a spot on the city-wide All-City team. His spectacular kicking pulled Mar- shall out of the hole many times. A , , Vx., .E . z K ' ,J DIVISIONAL CHAMPS Under the watchful eyes of Coach Henry Holman, Marshall this year reached lofty heights in the city high school basketball conference. At a disadvantage be- cause ot lack of height, Coach Holman stressed the importance of speed. Entered in the Southside divi- sion, the'Red and Gray went through their schedule with seven impressive victories out of eight conference clashes, clinching the divisional championship. With all eyes turned toward a possible conference cham- pionship, the Redskins met Harding in the first game of the playoffs only to be toppled from their perch after a fast, rough and tumble battle. Meeting Humboldt for consolation honors, Marshall again Was downed, but not before giving them plenty of trouble. Credit for this fast, smooth-working team cannot be given to any one individual. Every member of the squad played his best. ln several instances with defeat staring them in the face, they overcame heavy odds to rally and Win the game. Albert Feathers Danovsky, mainstay and back- bone of the squad, Won a position on the all-city basketball team, and Stanley Tabor and Billy Kamman received honorable mentions. 4, K -fq.....,.
