LANGUAGES As in other high schools in Rochester, foreign languages are now being studied for a longer period of time at JMHS. French and Spanish are offered to eighth grade pupils, with the idea that the study of one language be continued to the time of graduation. A second foreign language may be begun later if the pupil so desires. A Regents examina- tion is no longer given until the completion of three years of French or Spanish. This test now emphasizes under- standing the spoken and written language. We find that the language laboratory is helping to train in these respects. The pupils hear not only the voice of the teacher, but, from the tapes and discs, that of native speakers of the language, at varying speeds. Pupils are trained to under- stand and speak the foreign language before learning to read and write it. This is, after all, the way we learned our English. Mr. Donald Clark Department Head E M.. l SCIENCE Mr. Daniel Houseman Department Head Mr. John Dailor gf ,.-39.4 9 Mr. Thomas Dillon Miss Betty Feldbauer Mrs. Jean Havill Mr. Charles Ostrander 14 This year has been character- ized by significant advances in the AGE of SPACE. New dis- coveries, through research and de- velopment are affecting the lives of all of us. To make our future citizens aware of these develop- ments in their remote physical environment, to have them under- stand the principles and problems associated with the exploration of space is one of the goals of the Science Department. In addition, young people must be informed of the critical shortage of scien- tists, engineers and technicians in our free world, and be encouraged to consider these areas as career opportunities. Our existence as a free nation, will, to a very great extent, rest .upon the number of people who enter these fields in the next decade. Mr. Sebastian Gangi Mr. Norman Stout
