But the design can be varied according to the way in which the individual makes life meaningful to himself. As this year's class draws near to the day of graduation, they have the opportunity to carry on the 'SNew Frontier as begun by its leader. They will be able to put forth their own dreams and ideas and toset their own pattern for living. The following pages have recorded forever the efforts, plans and achievements of the students at John Marshall, along with the hope that existence will never become so insignificant as to be con- sidered a mold that cannot be broken. 3 vm, M ug.- 1315- -'feff f N ,MWA fw- ' , ww . The world demands skill and scholarship of people in a measure not previously experienced. John Nlarshall oflers a wider variety of subjects with a greater range of challenge and difliculty than ever before. The school day is longer. More is demanded of students at every level of achievement. Excellence is a human necessity. The emphasis in classrooms is upon skillful training, clear, understanding, thoughtful analysis. Our school is geared to prepare students to enter service trades, skilled fields, technical training and the professions. All who enter here may graduate and find a satis- factory way to earn a living if they will accept the discipline and guidance of the school and earnestly set themselves to master essential daily tasks. Dr. Raymond E. Francis Principal Upon leaving high school, society presents a picture of ever changing conditions. No one can predict with certainty what will be the jobs tomorrow. However, a preparation in basic skills and understandings can chart the way to earn a satisfying living. From the hrst job to the last, competition will be very keen and constant retraining a virtual necessity. The most fruitful jobs of the future will, as never before, go to the reliable, the skillful, the thoughtful, the brave and the imaginative. The world in all of its closeness and ever pressing human problems needs the wisdom and services of knowledgeable and dedicated men and women. As students of the Class of 1964 face a new and exciting world, our faith in your abilities and our best wishes go out to each of you. Mr. Matthew R. ENGLISH English has never been considered more important than it is in this nuclear age. The need for clear, direct communication and true understanding and respect for the individual and groups can be fostered by training in effective speech and writing and in the reading skills. Literature, both classic and modern is the laboratory course in human nature which helps everyone to understand humanity, past and present. This year the English Department, under the direction of Mr. Granite, has made use of Films, Hlmstrips, recordings of poetry and plays, and speed reading devices. An overhead projector has been used to illustrate the structure and use of language in student themes and tests. English is not only basic to all other subjects, but is a dynamic course in itself. The New York Regents examination for seniors this year is called COMPREHENSIVE ENGLISH, an apt name for the goal of our John Marshall English Department. The Social Studies Department is represented in every grade level at John Marshall ranging from New York State history in the seventh grade to electives in economics and problems of democracy seminars in the twelfth year. The department stresses the need for understanding the problems of the past so that the solution of those problems can lead to a better country and world. The connection of a living yester- day with a vital living tomorrow is the essence of all history. Through the use of con- stantly changing teaching techniques and up-to-date resources, the teachers of the Social Studies Department strive to help their students achieve an understanding of the importance of history in their lives. New dis- coveries, through research and de- velopment are affecting the lives of all of us. To make our future citizens aware of these develop- ments in their remote physical environment, to have them under- stand the principles and problems associated with the exploration of space is one of the goals of the Science Department. In addition, young people must be informed of the critical shortage of scien- tists, engineers and technicians in our free world, and be encouraged to consider these areas as career opportunities. Our existence as a free nation, will, to a very great extent, rest .upon the number of people who enter these fields in the next decade. Mr. Sebastian Gangi Mr. Norman Stout LANGUAGES As in other high schools in Rochester, foreign languages are now being studied for a longer period of time at JMHS. French and Spanish are offered to eighth grade pupils, with the idea that the study of one language be continued to the time of graduation. A second foreign language may be begun later if the pupil so desires. A Regents examina- tion is no longer given until the completion of three years of French or Spanish. This test now emphasizes under- standing the spoken and written language. We find that the language laboratory is helping to train in these respects. The pupils hear not only the voice of the teacher, but, from the tapes and discs, that of native speakers of the language, at varying speeds. Pupils are trained to under- stand and speak the foreign language before learning to read and write it. This is, after all, the way we learned our English. Mr. Donald Clark Department Head E M.. FINE ARTS The Art Department this year has offered its students a strong basic education it its field. The many art forms and media including watercolors, tempra, pen and ink drawing, wood lamination, cut paper, ehalks and charcoal, basic letter forms, and paper maehe were studied. Great eras and representative figures in art history were also studied. The Department sponsors a Fine Arts Festival during the spring term so that these fields may be seen in Combination. Over a period of two or three days musical concerts, dramatic events, and art displays are presented for the students and the school community as well. fans, v Q , fl I-U45 f Mr. Donald Hayden Mrs. Ruth Sehlenker Mr. Robert Moran 1 6 l Mrs. Rita Oberleichtner INDUSTRIAL ART The Industrial .Xrts Department is having' an exciting year. Late August of 1963, cool weather, but a warm feeling in my heart as I entered John Marshall for a visit with my new Hbrothern Dick. In August there were just empty rooms and corridors, and a big auditorium without Mar- shallites . . . but a few weeks later hundreds of students filled the school to overflowing . . , I am very happy to have them as friends and teachers. These were my first impressions but I am strongly sure that none of them has changed. John lVIarshall is still an interest fountain for me. This program has been planned to prepare both boys and girls for better personal and family living, for good citizenship, and for choosing, getting, and holding a job. School and work experience are provided throughout the program to help develop understanding in these areas. During the first two years occupational and social skills are emphasized in addition to academic skills. Classroom instruction is supplemented by training in special education shops where stu- dents learn many skills needed on the job. The third year of the program combines classroom work with actual on-the-job work experience in many different jobs. Class- room activities are further developed through these job oppor- tunities, Actual job placement completes the School-VVork Program. M. Scudder R. St. James E. We would like to thank Mr. Anthony Bruculere, the Ameri- can Yearbook Company representative for all the help he has given us in putting this book together. Under the direction of its new faculty sponsor, Mr. Pierce, the format had been changed, the editorial system has been revamped, and the underlying approach to school news has been somewhat modified. The new Docket is smaller, handier and more readable. Its reduced size has enabled the staff to experiment on several occa- sions with an added attraction - A a single sheet edition called the Dockette. This shorter edition is intended as a supple- ment to the regular Docket. The old system of editors for each page under the direction of an editor-in-chief has given way to an editorial committee. Under the new system a different editor directs the production of each month's paper, aided by the other editors. In addition to this a greater effort has been made to create a paper for all of the school, one which will relate student body to faculty and administration. Stories are selected on a broader base of general appeal and although several old features have vanished, the new approach seems to appeal to a majority of the student body. EDITORS: M. Robinson, B. Good theatre must expose itself to society in order that they are richly entertained, educated, and stimulated. The fun-fabulous comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace presented by the Senior Class started off the Hperforming year with a resounding artistic and financial success. A program of Children's Theatre, new to John lklarshall and the City of Rochester brought The Rell Shoes to several elementary schools in the area. This provided the touring company the N opportunity of not only acting but utilizing knowl- , edge acquired in the areas of sets, lighting, costume design, make-up, and technical development. Bowling is one of the most highly competitive of all varsity sports. Mars'hall's intramural league bowls at Terrace Gardens every Tuesday night. Out of the forty league members, only the hye highest scorers are chosen for the varsity team which bowls in interscholastic meets on Thursday nights. With this system, the varsity 111en must be able to keep 11p with the keen competition of the other league members from week to week. This makes bowling a very demancling sport in which continuous outstanding performance is a necessity. Under Coach Hill, Captain Jim Hurd led the team through a successful season this year. Jim was backed by league-leaders Tom Czebatul, Dave Dewey, George Duncan and Alan Welsh. 116 FIRST ROW.' G. Herliert, S. Guinan. V. Bottacelli. Inclcnla.
