MR. THOMAS VETTER Head ocial tudies The goal of the Social Studies Department is to teach history, concepts of government, citizenship, and respect for the great traditions our country represents. The Social Studies Department is represented in every grade level at Iohn Marshall ranging from New York State history in the seventh grade to electives in economics and problems of democracy in the twelfth grade. The department stresses the need for understanding the problems of the past so that the solution of those problems can lead to a better country and world. The connection of a living yesterday with a vital living tomorrow is the essence of all history. Through the use of constantly changing teach- ing techniques and up-to-date resources, the teachers of the Social Studies Department strive to help their students achieve an understanding of the importance of history in their lives. Business Education The clicking of typewriter keys, the whirl of shorthand outlines, and the debits equalling the credits are merely symbols of what Business Educa- tion has meant through the years. ln modern business, these form the basic skills - to be used by business-trained young people who will be operating card-punch machines, dictaphones, automatic typewriters, and the ever-blos- soming varieties of computing, record-keeping, and communication equipment. Personal-use business students will be balancing their checking accounts and planning the financial adventure of a new home: and others will be taking down lecture notes in Briefhand and typing their own term papers.
