1 H Zia ,, dis iq fi Thirty-six Years 0 Service. On April 30, 1962 our Vice-Principal, Mr. Leon C. Friel, bade farewell to the, familiar and hallowed halls which have reaped the bounty of his thirty-six years of devoted service, Mr. Friel came to the new Iohn Marshall High School in 1926 to teach mathematics. Three years later he was made head of the mathematics department, a position he held until 1944, when he became Marshall's Vice-Principal, In addition to his academic contributions, Mr. Friel supervised many extra-curricular activities, two of which were Marshall's winning basketball team, in the early days and more recently, the National Honor Society. The challenge of Iohn Marshall High School, in Mr. Friel's mind, was to try to bring the best out of each student so he will work up to his capacity and beyond it. Ir is most fitting to say that Mr. Friel met his challenge and went beyond it in his effort to make Iohn Marshall a school worthy of praise. Surely such a devoted servant to the welfare of all of us is entitled to the highest degree of respect and admiration. Mr. Friel, the Iohn Quill salutes you.

MISS MARY C. FOLEY Head English English has never been considered more important than it is today in this nuclear age. The need for clear, direct communication and true under- standing and respect for the individual and groups can be fostered by train- ing in effective speech and writing and in the reading skills. Literature, both classic and modern, is Hthe laboratory course in human nature which helps everyone to understand humanity, past and present. This year the English Department has made use of films, Hlmstrips. recordings of poetry and plays, and speed reading devices. An overhead projector has been used to illustrate the structure and use of language in student themes and tests. English is not only basic to all other subjects, but is a dynamic course in itself. The New York Regents examination for seniors this year is called Comprehensive English, an apt name for the goal of our Iohn Marshall English Department. MR. IOI-IN ALLEN MRS. ANNA BROWN MRS.
